Out of the Park

In 1978, a paper airplane erased a John Lowenstein home run after a fan threw a paper airplane onto

the field just as Angels pitcher Paul Hartzell was winding up. The umpire called time because of the interference, but Hartzell finished pitching and Lowenstein ended up hitting

the ball over the right field fence. The hit was called back because of the time out.

Scorecards are used to recreate the events in a baseball game, from the memorable plays to the little details that make baseball America's favorite pastime.

Instructions:Print out a scorecard. Each scorecard has space for 9 different "batters" (and 9 subs). If you have more guests at the party, print enough scorecards to make sure that every guest has a line that they can sign.

On the top line, fill in the team names that are playing against each other (be creative – some ideas include Cake Lovers vs. Pie Lovers, Pirates vs. Ninjas, Zombies vs. Humans, etc.), the "stadium" (location of the party), and the date of the party.

The next 9 columns feature baseball diamonds. Here, guests can start to put together their fantasy baseball game. They can draw lines to show both the batter's movement and where they hit the ball, as well as record the play, whether it's a single (1B), a strike (K), or a stolen base (SB). (See the table for more abbreviations and symbols.) You can be as realistic as you like, or make it up as you go.

After you've filled out the data for each inning, you can start to tally the number of runs and hits in the bottom row. Add up the number of runs for each inning and fill in the top left corner of the corresponding box. Fill in the number of hits for each inning in the bottom right corner of the box.

Once that's filled out, especially diligent baseball fans may want to calculate the team's box score, which sums up how the game went overall. (If you divide the total number of hits by the total number of runs in the game, that gives you your team's "hits per run" stat.)

Use the notes box to jot down memories or exciting moments from the game (or party), or leave a note for the host or guest of honor!
