Page 2: Focus Question: What is the difference between mass and weight?

Essential Question: What are the different kinds of forces and how are they measured?

Objective: SWBAT (Students will be able to) differentiate between mass and weight by measuring the gravitational force of washers and plotting it on a graph opposite the weight of washers.

Getting Started #4

A. What happens to the reading on the scale when you pull down on the scale?

B. What are the units of measure for force on your scale?

C. What is the maximum force that your scale can measure?

D. How much force do the small marks along the scale represent?

Page 7: Focus Question: What is the difference between mass and weight?

Read “The Difference Between Mass and Weight” on page 15. In your notebook, write down 2 differences and one similarity between mass and weight.

Mass Weight

From the reading and our class discussion, write a prediction of what you believe the difference between mass and weight is.

Page 9: Focus Question: What is the difference between mass and weight?

Prediction/Hypothesis:

How can we test our hypothesis/prediction?…with Spring Scale and Washers

Page 10: Focus Question: What is the difference between mass and weight?

Explore:

1. Design a table to record data.

2. One washer = one mass unit. (The amount of washers on the spring scale can go under the column in your table labeled “Mass”.)

3. Weight should be recorded in newtons (N).

4. The first data point in your table should be 0 washers, 0 N.

Make sure the spring scale is set properly. When there is no mass hanging on the scale, it should register zero. If the scale does not register zero then I will show you how to adjust it.

Make sure that you have at least two decimal places when measuring the weight.

Data Table Checklist:Columns are labeled.Units are included with measurements.Data are reasonable and precise.

Page 13: Focus Question: What is the difference between mass and weight?

Graph Checklist:TitleGraph axes are labeled and include units.Graph axes have a uniform scale. (For

example, “0, 5, 10, 15” or “0, .2, .4, .6”)Data points are correctly plotted.One straight line is drawn through the center

of the data points.

Exit Ticket:

Using the terms “mass” and “weight”, write two sentences about what you learned from the lab today.

On your way out, put your exit ticket in the folder that you feel is the most accurate. (Green, Yellow, or Red)

Nobody is permitted to write while we are discussing the class’s claims and evidence. Once we have solidified the class discussion, you may number the correct responses you have under “Self” and Group” and then write in the rest you need under “Class”.

Important Concepts:• Mass is related to the amount of matter in a

body.• Weight is a measure of the force of gravity on

a body.• The weight of a body is directly proportional

to the mass of the body.• The force of a spring depends on how much it

is stretched or compressed.
