1. Ecumenical Advocacy Days Recap
EAD was opened by Rev. Traci DeVon Blackmon, pastor from Florissant and
Ferguson, MO. She spoke powerfully of the intersections of racial and pris-
on justice.
April 17-20, Joe Paparone and Sr Doreen Glynn, along with FOCUS allies
and several Capital Area pastors, participated in Ecumenical Advocacy Days
in Washington, DC. The theme this year was Breaking the Chains: Mass Incarceration and Systems of Exploitation. On Monday the contingent from New York traveled to Capitol Hill to lobby their legislators for an end to man-
datory minimum sentencing and immigrant detention quotas. Joe and Sr.
Doreen took the opportunity to have additional meetings with the offices of
Senators Schumer and Gillibrand to advocate for the upcoming Childhood
Nutrition Re-Authorization, and other hunger and poverty concerns.
4. Best Practices Food Bank Roundtable
A presentation by FOCUS Churches was featured during the Best Practices
Roundtable meeting of the Regional Food Bank Public Relations and Social Me-
dia event on April 21, 2015. During the event many ideas were exchanged
among the many agencies from around the Capital District. As a result of its par-
ticipation, FOCUS received some Adopt-a-Program credits, which will be applied
to our Food Pantry.
