Presidents Report by Deborah Mullins

AUGUST COMPETITION RESULTS Thanks to Bruce Hedge for judging our August competition. The set subject was ‘Hanging Rock’. With his huge knowledge of The Rock and its environment Bruce was able to provide some great insights to the images.

Hi,

The very successful ‘Now and Then’ Exhibition closed this month after a very well attended opening at Lancefield Market followed by a rotating 4 week display through the Bendigo Banks in Romsey and Lancefield that received fantastic feedback. A very big thank you to the Bank for sponsoring this project and to the Romsey and Lancefield Districts Historical Society in providing the club access to the historical images of the region. Now – thinking caps on for next year’s club exhibition project. All ideas welcome. The newsletter looks slightly different this month – Paul our editor is off having fun and will bring back a host of great new images no doubt. All newsletter queries to Deborah this month.

Reminders for May 7 May General Meeting:

• The In-House Image competition/review is a print based entry. Any size welcome – this is NOT a formal competition but an opportunity to try your hand at getting the print process right. Two topics – OPEN and MACRO/CLOSE-UP. Max 2 in each

• Mini Presentations: There will be 3 short presentations. Receiving and Giving Constructive Feedback, Focal Length Choices and their Impact and Blur Options

• Digital Doctor: if you want some digital suggestions for image ‘improvement’ submit to Deborah prior to the meeting for discussion with the group on the night. Helpful if you are not quite sure what to do with your image

13 May Technical Night:

• Guest speaker Richard Tatti will be providing us with inspirations and techniques for getting the best from night photography. We won’t be heading out into the night ourselves but if you want to bring your camera along so you can work out where the relevant controls are on your camera please do so.

18 May: Workshop

• Deborah is running a half day workshop on Lightroom. You will need to register your interest. Details inside the newsletter

24-26 May: VAPS conference: Details at the end of the newsletter No walkabouts this month due to other activities

Reminders for June 1 June: Night Photography with Martin commences 3 June: 20-week Challenge commences. Details inside the newsletter 17 June: Panel FAQ’s required: Details inside

20 Week Challenge

Aim of the Challenge This is NOT a competition – it is just for fun

To have fun To encourage club members to use and practice their camera skills more frequently To encourage members to think about topics they perhaps do not usually take photographs of to expand their skill set To allow members to get constructive feedback from others in the group regarding their images that should assist in further skill development and/or encourage other ways of seeing To see and provide feedback on the other images entered that should also generate creative thinking

Who can enter Club members only

How to enter Up load topic images to Facebook Closed Group W: https:www.facebook.com/groups/MRPSphoto30/ Club members will need to request membership to the closed group. This will then be approved (as long as they are a club member) by Deborah preferably before the commencement at Week One of the challenge.

For assistance Ronda Woolgar: [email protected] Deborah Mullins: [email protected]

Time lines Weeks start on a Monday (12.01am) and finish on a Sunday (12pm)

Week One opens Monday 3 June

Last day of the challenge Sunday 20 October

Images Images should be taken only in the week (Monday to Sunday) of that topic challenge and should be uploaded to the Facebook group page no later than the Sunday 12pm end of week.

Image Size Approx 1920 x 1080px with a maximum size of 3mb Image may include a copyright ‘the photographer’ logo

Challenge Topics

The challenge for the week will be posted on the Facebook group page two weeks before the image is due but must only be taken in the week of the challenge. This is to give participants some planning time (Or give them all out at the beginning (less work!) but may make it too easy to fudge which week the image was taken in)

Feedback You can be as involved as much or as little as you want to be. You can ask questions about how to approach a certain challenges and get feedback from the group. You can give and provide feedback from the challenge submissions. Its up to you.

Small Group Activities: Landscape Vision with Doug Hunwick

Doug ran two very successful groups in March. Each group had a full day session on alternate weekends. The aim of the sessions was to school people on using their time to plan and locate the best places, the best perspectives, atmosphere and composition to create better images using the camera gear they have at their disposal. Guidelines were provided to allow the best chance the most onto the sensor so that post processing could be done to the optimum. Doug received very positive feedback on the sessions and all considered the series of sessions a success! Well done and thank you Doug.

Small Group Activities July to November

We are in the process of planning the options for the second half of the years small group activities. Watch out for:

• Sat 22 June: Perfecting the Print Half day workshop

• Aug/Sept: Night Photography with Martin Group 2: 3 night sessions

• Aug/Sept: Lightroom Stage Two: follow on from Stage One – more advanced features of LR

• Sat 19 October: 10-1pm Introduction to Photoshop, 2.00-5pm Advanced Photoshop

• 23 November: Portraits full day Workshop

2020 planning

Seems premature BUT – the committee is already thinking ahead to 2020 and the activities and functions of the club and we want your feedback. At the May meeting we will be discussing some of the potential changes ahead for next year and will also be arranging a survey so that all club members can have an input into how the club proceeds – this will done via a Survey Monkey form which we also utilised a few years ago and the information provided was very beneficial to the development of the clubs ongoing programs.

We will let you know when the survey is ready to be completed and there will be a prize given to someone, randomly selected from one of the people who complete the survey.

2020 MRPS club getaway

Watch this space!!! Plans afoot for a camera club getaway. Should be a fantastic gathering of photography friends and others.

MRPS photographers at the Bendigo Easter Parade - Sunday April 21st

Several club photographers journeyed on Easter Sunday for Bendigo's annual Easter Parade. The 2019 parade attracted an exceptional large crowd with the only opportunity to see the old and new dragons outside of Bendigo's Chinese Museum. The amazing Golden Dragon Sun Loong, the world’s longest dragon of this kind, made his last regular parade journey through the streets of central Bendigo. The Bendigo Chinese Association, featured dragons Dai Gum Loong, Sun Loong, Bendigo’s first Imperial Dragon Loong and Night Dragon Yar Loong. The purpose of this years parade was specifically to show off Dai Gum Loong to all spectators and for the old Dragon Sun Loong to show the new Dragon Dai Gum Loong the parade route so he can parade on his own in the years to come. Well thats the excuse for hours of mass excursion by those supporting the dragons, banging of drums and clashing of cymbals and continuous fire works crackers all adding to the pageantry of the day. There was also the opportunity to visit the visit the Bendigo Camera Club's annual photography exhibition at Dudley House adjacent to where the Easter Parade commenced in View St. A great day was had by all that attended.

Announcement for night photographers - the Eta Aquariid Meteor Shower

Twice a year, Earth’s orbit intersects with that of Halley’s Comet, creating a glorious natural light show. The peak of the “display” this year is predicted to be in the pre-dawn hours of May the 6th and 7th. Look north-east from about 5am. For more background information read the RoyalAuto article by Perry Vlahos who many may remember had an Astronomy column in the AGE Green Guide. https://www.racv.com.au/royalauto/living/at-home/eta-aquariids-meteor-shower.html

Competition Definitions

Open Any subject created photographically. It should embody the elements of good design, arrangement and composition which reflects the interpretation of the photographer

Set Subject A subject set on the club syllabus and defined by the club committee

Set subjects throughout 2019:

April: ‘Animals’ These can be pets or wild animals

June: ‘Water’ Water definition: Pure water is tasteless, odorless, and colorless. Water can occur in three states: solid (ice), liquid, or gas (vapor).

Water (fresh or salt) is to be the main theme and key subject of the image. It may be in the landscape (such as sea, lake or river, rain etc) or shows use by people (such as sprinklers or canals) or a closer interpretation such as water droplets etc. The image should be about the water! It can be coloured.

August: ‘Outdoors at Night’ Any landscape shot (rural or urban) that is taken outdoors at night where the existing illumination and not the flash is to be used. These can include night skies, street lighting in urban environments etc

October: ‘Chaos’ A state of extreme disorder and/or confusion

Other topics throughout 2019: In-house comps and other activities

February ‘The Festive Season’ Any images that reflect the mood of the Festive and Holiday Season

March ‘Marathon’ (six images – participants should try and shoot all 6 but this is not a requirement)

All images should come from the Macedon Ranges area

The idea is to take one image that meets the two set criteria:

The Kitchen: Abstract

Raindrops: Floral

Bridges: History

Silhouette: Landscape

Graffiti: Colourful

Critters: Eyes

The selection of challenges work for those less experienced through to some that may involve a greater challenge and skill set.

Page 17: Focal oint July 2017 - WordPress.com · July 2017 Page 8 MRPS photographers at the Bendigo Easter Parade - Sunday April 21st Several club photographers journeyed on Easter Sunday

July 2017 Page 17

May ‘Up Close and Macro’ Up Close: any photograph that is taken when the camera lens is less than one meter from the main subject. This can allow club members without a significant macro lens to take part Macro: Macro photography is where the subject of the photograph is usually very small in real life, or is a very small detail of a larger object. The final photo you produce is normally larger than life-size. Macro photographs are normally taken from extreme close-up range. Your image, as projected onto the sensor plane, becomes equal to life size or greater.

July ‘Australiana’ Images of objects relating to Australia and its history or culture, especially,

but not essential, in the form of a collection

September ‘High Contrast’ Contrast is the difference between light and dark in an image. High contrast images will have bright highlights and dark shadows, bold colours, and show texture in the subject.

November ‘The Power of the Frame’ The aim of the image is to capture, in camera, the key subject that is, in some manner, framed by other elements within the image. Some post production can enhance the framing if appropriate and relevant, but the framing itself should be captured in the one image with the subject.

Technical Nights

We will practice fast shutter speed water drops amongst other fast shutter speed activities

March Macro, close up and focus stacking Part presentation but mainly practical session on getting good close up/macros with particular attention on getting the focus right. We will practice taking images for focus stacking with an explanation of how to process these

June Chaos (overview of the June comp topic) My Photography – Behind the Scenes. We will invite an experienced photographer to go through his techniques and settings used to achieve their images And a Panel FAQ discussion with a panel of experienced club members. Questions can be sent in early
