    How to registerRegister in person at the Outdoor Rec-reation Center (ORC); or use a credit/debit card over the phone. Full pay-ment is required at the time of registra-tion. Cash, Check, VISA, and Master-Card are accepted. Pre-registration isrequired on all activities. The ORC isopen ThursdayMonday from 8am-6pm. Call the ORC at 873-4058 orstop by building 627.

    Cancellation policyFull refunds will be given with four daysnotice, unless otherwise stated for eachactivity. No refunds will be given within3 days of the activity or for no-shows.

    Volkmar Lake Snowmachine/IceFishing AdventureApproximately 60 mile round trip fromQuartz Lake to Volkmar Lake on one of themost enjoyable and memorable Interiorrides you will ever take. A GREAT river andtrail-riding day trip. Meet ODR at Quartz

    Lake and off we go. We provide the bait,poles, snowmachine and helmet. Coldweather gear required (balaclavas, stoutgloves, correct footwear, and good layer-ing). Bring water and snacks and lunch.Depart Quartz at 8 am, return by 5 pm.Sign up at least 3 days in advance. $100/person. Participants must have passed ORVSnowmachine training.     Maclaren River LodgeSnowmachine AdventureEnjoy an overnight snowmachine adventureat the Maclaren River Lodge! Bring plentyof warm clothing and a camera. This ad-venture trip is available for ages 18 andup. Cost will be $150 per person; reserva-tions for lodging must be made and paidby the customer by calling MRL at907.822.5444.     Chena Hot Springs OvernightSoak your cares away on an overnightadventure to Chena Hot Springs! This

    magical resort 55 miles NW of Fairbanksboasts an outdoor rock lake that is onegiant hot springs hot tub! (Children 17 andunder are only allowed in the indoor hottub and pool.) Cross-country skiing, auroraviewing and other activities are alsoavailable. Check out their website atwww.chenahotsprings.com. Package in-cludes transportation, lodging and poolpass. Departs from Gabriel Auditoriumparking lot at 8 am on Sat. January 15and will return by 5 pm on Sun. January16. Cost: $189 for single or party of two;$219 for two adults and two kids (17 and

    Snowmachine Trail RideEnjoy a snowmachine ride right out yourback door! Experience fun trail riding onlocal trails through the surrounding wilder-ness. Trails lead to a wall tent on a ridgewith spectacular views of the mountains.

    This is where we stop for a warm up bythe wood stove and enjoy a cup of hotcocoa before heading out to hit the trailssome more. Good for beginner to interme-diate riders who have passed the snow-machine safety class. Fee includes rentalof snowmachine. Guide provided. Warmwinter riding gear required.     Moonlight Cross-Country SkiIf youve never skied under the full moon,

    youre in for a treat! Ski by the light of the

    moon with your friends. Guide provided.Meet at Outdoor Rec. at 6 pm and we willdrive to Fire Tower Hill area for somemoonlight cross-country skiing. Dont missout on this unique experience! Dress warmand bring a headlamp in case its cloudy.

    Ice Dogs Hockey TripCheer on the home team at the Big DipperIce Arena in Fairbanks as the Ice Dogs takeon their competitor with the fast pacedaction and excitement of hockey! Transpor-tation to the game and tickets included.Bring extra cash for souvenirs and a food

    Alaskan Predator CallingJoin the Outdoor Recreation Center (ORC)on an adventure to the Tanana River Basinfor predator calling. Animals include: Wolf,Red Fox, Lynx, and Coyotes.     Aurora Snowmachine TripJoin Outdoor Rec. for a night snowmachinetrip to a wall tent on the ridge to view theaurora! Once at the heated tent, hang outwith friends and enjoy hot cocoa or a gameof cards while you wait for the aurora.Bring your camera! This is an excellent tripfor photographers or anyone who wants tosee the northern lights. Riders must havepassed the snowmachine safety course.Meet at Outdoor Rec. at 10 pm. We willreturn by 1 am.     Outdoor Skills Class - Build a Pulk

    SledIf you like to ski or snowshoe in the winterand are tired of carrying your gear onyour back, this is the class for you. You willbuild and take home a pulk sled that canbe used all winter long for your campingand recreational expeditions. All materialsincluded. Meet at Gabriel Auditorium at 10am. Ages 16 and up. Cost: $75. Sign up/fees due one week before class. Class willbe 1-1.5 hrs. long. Min. 2, max. 6.Please indicate belt size in registration;small, medium, or Large. (Jan. 8)

    north of Fairbanks, Silver Gulch offersaward-winning brews and a fantastic din-ner selection. (Food and drinks not includedin package price.) Lodging at Ft. Wain-wright in Fairbanks on Friday is included.Saturday morning there will be time to stopfor food and shopping (in the WalMart/Barnes & Noble/Old Navy area off theJohansen) before we head back to Ft.Greely by 3 pm.     George Lake Ice FishingIce fish for Northern Pike and Burbot atGeorge Lake! The Outdoor RecreationCenter (ORC) will transport snowmachines40 mi. to the Tanana River. Customer willfollow in POV. Snowmachines will then beused to access George Lake. Limits: 5 Bur-bot; 5 Pike (only one of which may be 30in or longer). Dress warm and bring a lunch.Bait will be provided. Depart the ORC at 8am and return at 6pm. Cost of this adven-ture trip is $75. (Jan. 22, Feb. 26 )

    Snowmachine Training ClassesClasses take place at ODR on Sundays at0900 and 1300 and usually take 2-3 hoursto complete. Participants must be an au-thorized user and at least 16 years oldwith a drivers license. Gloves, goggles or

    sun glasses, balaclavas, winter boots, win-ter jacket, and ski/winter pants are neededfor the ride. FMWR provides helmet withface shield. Class includes safety video,machine introduction, and short circuit ride.$10 per/person. Sign up at Outdoor Rec.(Jan. 6, 16, 23, 30, & Feb. 6, 20)

    The Outdoor RecreationCenter offers an instructionalsnowmachine safety andtraining course during thewinter season. The safetytraining is mandatory for all

    snowmachine rentals; and to operate on USARAK land. The trainingcourse is available on Sundays at 0900 and 1300. A maximum of 8participants can attend each course. Call the Outdoor Recreation Cen-ter to schedule your training. Cost is $10/person.

    North Twin LakeNorth Twin Lake is located in Don-nelly Training Area; about 13miSouthwest of Fort Greely. Speciesinclude Rainbow Trout and LakeTrout.

    Ice-House Rental InformationThe Ice-houses are available for rent with and without equipment (Fishing poles,folding chairs, Ice-auger). With equipment, the rental fee is $30 for Military;$40 for Civilians. Without equipment, the rental fee is $15 for Military; $20 forCivilians. For more information please contact the Outdoor Recreation Center.

    In addition to your current Alaska sport fishing license, you must obtain a Recrea-tion Access Permit (RAP) before fishing. You can get your free RAP card at the

    Fort Greely front gate Visitors Center. Permits are also available at the Natural

    Resources office in the hangar at Allen Army Airfield (873-1614 or 873-1615).

    You must have the RAP card in your possession while on Training Lands.

    Bolio LakeBolio Lake is located in DonnellyTraining Area; about 8mi Southwestof Fort Greely. Species includeRainbow Trout and Arctic Grayling.

    Firetower Sled/Ski HillFiretower Hill offers something forall ages; a great place for sled-ding and brushing up on your cross-country/downhill skills before hit-ting the slope. A tow rope is inoperation Saturday and Sundayfrom 11am to 4 pm.

    Sleds, Snowboards, cross-countryskis, and downhill skis are avail-

    able for rent at the Outdoor Rec-reation Center.

    Please Note: Firetower Hill willbe closed on Saturday, Jan. 1.

    Winter activities to energize you

    ~First Annual Northern Pike Contest~Take a trip with FMWR and register your catch to be

    eligible for prizes!Contest open to pike taken from George and Volkmar Lakes on a scheduled

    FMWR outing. Length of fish will be measured andrecorded by ODR guide staff. Contest runs through March 31.

    1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes will be awarded. Details to be announced.

    Fire Starting Tips

    How to use a magnesium stick:Shave some magnesium from the stick with aknife onto flammable tinder. (Try a real cot-ton ball or fine birch bark paper.) Now turnthe stick over and strike the flint to produce aspark. Aim your sparks directly on tinder.Have dry material ready to feed the fire as

    soon as you have flame.

    Magnesium sticks are available at mostsporting goods departments/stores for

    around $5-$7. Works when wet!
