Coolant Service at Mullen’s Tire and AutoOur cars have to operate in a wide range of temperatures here in Carlisle and our engine coolant must be able to perform

‘no matter what’. Think for a moment about the environment where the coolant works. Very hot, high pressure, corrosive…

And all the while, it has to protect the components of the cooling system from corrosion. These components are made from steel and aluminum, plastics and rubber. The coolant has to be formulated to protect against corrosion for all of these different materials. That’s why different manufacturers recommend different types of anti-freeze for our vehicles.

There are several different ‘fami-lies’ of anti-freeze available. Your owners’ manual will tell you what kind you should use. Of course, Mullen’s Tire and Auto will know what to put in your car.

It’s important to stay on top of this because coolant system failure is the most common me-chanical problem people have Central Pennsylvania. Regu-lar service needs to be done to avoid failures and also to keep your warranty in place.

While the specifics of the ser-vice required may vary from vehicle to vehicle, your service consultant will know what to do. You’ll be advised to replace the coolant at specified intervals.

Some manufacturers may recom-mend periodic coolant system flushes. A flush adds a cleaning step to the fluid replacement pro-cess. Again, check to see what your service consultant recommends.

Someday, you may have to deal with an overheating problem, so you need to know what to do if your coolant temperature warn-ing light comes on or your tem-perature gauge is in the hot zone.

Now, overheating can be very expensive. You can literally melt down your engine and have to replace the whole thing. So take the warning signs seri-ously and take immediate steps.

First turn off the air condition-er. This will lower engine tem-

perature right away. Next turn your heater to maximum heat and run the fan at high speed. You might need to roll down the windows, but this will take a lot of heat off the engine.

Pull over as soon as you can safely do so, especially if you are stuck in slow-moving traffic, and shut the car off. It may take as much as 45 minutes for the engine to cool to the point that it’s safe to operate the car again.

If you need to add water or an-tifreeze, be sure to wait until the car cools down. Opening the radiator cap or even the overflow bottle when the cool-ant is hot and under pressure may result in serious burns.

So after the engine has cooled for 45 minutes or so, look to see if the coolant is low in the over-flow tank. If so, you can cover the overflow tank cap with a large cloth and open the lid. Then start the engine and pour in some water or antifreeze. Pour-ing it in when the car is running will circulate the new, cool fluid with the warmer fluid in the en-gine and avoid engine damage.

Of course, overheating is a se-rious problem and you need to get it fixed right away. Make sure the coolant is right before you drive home.

Those spring and winter in-spections really come in handy when they head off a cooling system problem. And don’t for-

get that severe service driving conditions, like towing or hot, dusty driving around the area, mean that you’ll need to service your coolant more frequently.

It is suggested that you have your coolant system inspected to find

small problems before they be-come big, and to change belts and hoses before they fail. After all, we don’t want you to lose your cool here in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. n

FAMILY AND MORALE, WELFARE & RECREATIONWhat exactly is Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation?

In 1940 a branch within the Army was established known as the Morale Division which later became known as “Special Services”. FMWR is a group of men and women who provide support and leisure activities to our Soldiers (active duty, Reserve and Guard) their Families, military retirees and civilian employees. Currently working in FMWR are approximately 37,000 employees worldwide and their mission is to deliver quality programs to Soldiers and their Families. There are many civilian employees who work for FMWR who have and continue to volunteer to deploy to Iraq so FMWR can provide the services and quality programs to the active service members who are away from their Families, defending our nation.

es and physical activity expectations in the home. It is equally as important to educate parents and families as it is to educate youth with weight issues. Additionally, when learning new healthy behaviors and lifestyle choices, it is imperative that families support these new positive be-havior changes. It can sometimes be easy to accidentally sabotage an individual’s weight loss or healthy lifestyle ef-forts if you yourself have never struggled with weight is-sues. That being said, parents are highly encouraged to participate in this program as much as possible.

This program is designed for youth ages 10 and up. We kindly as that youth have a BMI at or above the 85th per-centile, which is designated as “at-risk” for being over-weight. n

The youth of America have an obesity problem, and the youth of the military do too. A 2005 Health Behaviors Study found that 2 out of 3 non-active duty beneficiaries are overweight, 1 out of 3 is obese, and 18.9% of DOD

dependents are obese. According to a 2008 survey conducted by the Center for Health Promotion and Preventative Medicine-Europe, at DOD Dependents Schools the percentage of children with weight issues doubled within four years. Overweight children are highly likely to develop into overweight adults, and experience increased risk for the associ-ated health problems. Health concerns include heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and high cholesterol, just to name a few.

First Lady Michelle Obama has recently launched the “Let’s Move!” campaign in an effort to combat the nation’s obe-sity epidemic. The program stresses healthy eating and physical activity, for not only kids, but parents, schools, and communities. On May 9th the First Lady announced new collaborations with participating organizations to support military families. Some initial collaborations are with the International Health Racquet & Sportsclub As-sociation which is offering free memberships for service members and families, and the American Council on Exer-cise which committed to offering one million hours of free personal training to families members of deployed service members.

The Carlisle Barracks is joining the fight to end childhood obesity with the “Fit is Fun” program. This summer pro-gram for overweight youth will focus on healthy lifestyle choices, and fun physical activity in a non-competitive at-mosphere. The goal of this program is to give youth and families the tools necessary to make good decisions, for the rest of their lives. This is not a weight loss program, and this is not just an exercise class. “Fit is Fun” is an in-vestment in a healthy future. Physical activity will be a part of every session, and while the activities will be non-competitive and all-inclusive, they will be physically chal-lenging. Learning about nutrition, the human body, self-esteem, and weight control techniques will also be a vital part of “Fit is Fun.”

Parental involvement is a key factor in this program. Let’s face it, parents make the bulk of the food purchase choic-
