EMPOWERING POSSIBILITIESWomen’s History Month offers chance to honor those who made a difference
By CHELSEA [email protected]
It’s been a long and bumpyroad to women’s equality. Some might argue there’s stilla long way to go.
This Women’s HistoryMonth, the Northwest Heraldwants to celebrate the womenand organizations whohave paved the way to makethat road a little smoother, trailblazers who continue toshow women and girls thatanything is possible.
A pioneer forwomen’s suffrage
When one thinks of thewomen’s suffrage movementin Illinois, several femalefigures likely pop into mind— Jane Addams or, for thehistorically inclined, GraceWilbur Trout or Ida B.Wells-Barnett.
What about ElizabethShurtleff?
Who?Elizabeth Shurtleff of
Marengo was once an activeIllinois suffragist. Her hus-band, Judge Edward D. Shur-tleff, a rising political star, was elected to the IllinoisGeneral Assembly and laterbecame Speaker of the House.
Elizabeth Shurtleff’s influ-ence on her husband’s viewsis well-documented. Thecouple often invited state suf-frage leaders to speak to wom-en’s groups at their home. Itwas Elizabeth who persuadedher husband to support thegrowing women’s suffragemovement — despite hissympathies with the Anti-Sa-loon League, who believedstrongly that use and sale ofalcohol should be containedif not eliminated, and a groupknown for its opposition towomen’s suffrage.
Edward Shurtleff laterchampioned a bill that wouldmake Illinois the first stateeast of the Mississippi Riverto grant women the right tovote in presidential elections.Illinois also was one of thefirst states to ratify the 19thAmendment, which gavewomen the right to vote.
Wilbur Trout once saidthat she was “especially
grateful when we had securedthe vote of Edward D. Shur-tleff because he was alwaysbefore opposed to suffrage.”
Although it’s her husbandwhose name is prominent inIllinois history — for bothgood and bad — it’s Elizabethwho, in the annals of theMcHenry County HistoricalSociety, was called “oneof Marengo’s best-knownwomen.”
Shaping McHenryCounty’s Youth
Longtime educator MayChesak may be gone, but herlegacy to education lives ontoday.
Chesak was the kind ofteacher students rememberedand colleagues admired — somuch so that Huntley elemen-tary school students walk thehalls of a school named afterher.
She wanted to be a teacherfrom the time she was 4 yearsold playing with her dog, shetold the Northwest Herald ina 1999 interview. “I tried tomake my dog a student.”
Chesak spent 51 yearsteaching local children, starting in a one-room school-house in Fox River Grove, then on to Huntley, finallyretiring in 1974 as schoolprincipal in Greenwood.
But she was slow to
leave education. After shepacked up her classroom, she remained active with theRetired Teachers Associationand continued to substituteteach.
Her love for children andher community extended wellbeyond the classroom.
She was part of the Amer-ican Legion Auxiliary, theLions Club and Delta KappaGamma, a teachers’ honorssociety.
She died in 2007 at 103years old, but left a profoundlegacy for generations offormer students by which toremember her.
On track for abrighter tomorrow
Laurie Dayon neverthought she could run amarathon. She never thoughtshe could run a nonprofitorganization either.
But if there’s one lessonfrom her leading the localGirls on the Run, it’s thatanything is possible.
Girls on the Run empow-ers girls in third througheighth grade through activ-ities designed to help themmake good choices for alifetime of self-respect andhealthy living. The organi-zation’s mission is to inspiregirls to be joyful, healthyand confident, using a fun,
experience-based curriculumthat creatively integratesrunning.
“It gives the girls the toolsto stand up for themselvesand be better-rounded womenas they grow up,” Dayon said.
The program is designedto help girls identify whothey are and “empower themto face everything they’reconfronted with,” Girls onthe Run program coordinatorLisa Puma said.
The culmination of the 10-week program is a 5K race. Itdoesn’t matter if the girls runor walk it — as long as theycross the finish line.
“The idea is when youmeet that goal, it gives youthe foundation for the nextchallenge in your life,” Dayonsaid.
New to Girls on the Runthis year is what Dayoncalled the “GO Team,” whichstands for Girls who are Old-er. These women share theirstories about who inspiredthem when they were young— but perhaps more impor-tantly, who discouraged themand were proved wrong.
“We have to alwaysremember what’s happenedin the past so girls realize it’svery important to be wherewe are right now,” Pumasaid. “People fought veryhard so women can have avoice.”

Bill Hauck and his grandson, GeorgeMoody, examine the antique hand pumper displayed at the NorthernIllinois Fire Museum Chili Cook-Off at Donley’s Wild West Town banquet hall in Union. The event was heldto raise money for the museum and the Marengo department.
Life-changing chiliserved at cook-off
By CYNTHIA [email protected]
UNION — “This maychange your life,” Ben Camp-bell boasted as he scoopedsome chili into a Styrofoamcup and handed it off for sam-pling.
Campbell, a firefighterand paramedic for MarengoFire and Rescue, was toutingthe red shift’s entry in theinaugural Northern IllinoisFire Museum Chili Cook-Offon Sunday at Donley’s WildWest Town banquet hall inUnion.
The secret to the team’sflavorful recipe is cilantro,Campbell said.
The red shift’s chili wasamong seven available at theevent, held to raise money forthe museum and the Marengodepartment. Other competi-tors included the Union andPingree Grove fire protectiondistricts (a combined entry),Marengo Fire and Rescue’sblack shift, Marengo’s goldshift, Cary Fire ProtectionDistrict and two restaurants— Joe’s Place and Coleman’s.
Event-goers paid $5 to get
in, which included sampling.Full bowls of chili were $2.Everyone received a ticketstub with which to cast theirvotes. On the stage, the SinfulSaints Dixieland Band playedmidday. Raffles and doorprizes also were available.
A few hours into theevent, former Chicago BearKeith Van Horne signed au-tographs. It mattered not toTanner and Trevor Carlsonof Algonquin and their friendAndrew Proper that VanHorne played long beforethey were born.
They fidgeted excitedlywith the new Wilson footballsthey brought for signing.
“He was a Bear, for the Su-per Bowl,” said Trevor Carl-son, 13.
Tanner and Andrew, both9, play in Pop Warner foot-ball, and were eager to meetthe retired pro from the sto-ried 1985 Bears Super Bowlchampion team.
Behind the table whereVan Horne sat was an exam-ple of equipment the North-ern Illinois Fire Museum willshowcase when its leaders’dream of a permanent muse-
um are realized, said RogerDreher, museum president.
The apparatus, an 1856Hunneman, was a horse- orhand-drawn vehicle fromwhich water was handpumped. Once owned by theHarvard Fire Protection Dis-trict, Harvard sent it to Chi-cago during the Great Chica-go Fire in 1871.
The Northern Illinois FireMuseum leases space at Mey-er Material on Route 23 southof Marengo.
“We need a real home,”Dreher said. “We have about20 trucks in there, but wedon’t have any room for dis-plays like in a real museum.”
Mari Bicouvaris of Wood-stock attended the chili cook-off with her 2-year-old son,Nickolaus, and Marengo fire-fighter Patrick Fanning. Shesaid she hopes the museum’sfundraising is successful.
“I think it’s important forpeople to know the history ofwhere fire departments havecome from, and about firesafety,” she said. “Having amuseum raises awareness… and what little kid doesn’tlike fire trucks?”
