Dear Sisters and friends,

The current issue of our Province news letter highlights some of the events of the

first half of the year 2015. We are happy about certain initiatives undertaken as a Province to commemorate the Bicentenary of the birth of Don Bosco. The blessing and inauguration of Auxilium College Girls' Hostel at Udalguri which can house around 200 girls is one major achievement of the Province. Auxilium College, Udalguri, has for the 2nd consecutive year come out in flying colours in the arts and Science streams, proving the effectiveness of hard work and discipline. The good results will certainly attract more students to the College and Hostel. Auxilium Troncatti Home which was inaugurated in November last year envisages a great future for young people who are unable to pursue their academic studies. I am happy that the Home is vibrant with young people who are being trained to become self reliant, confident and employable. Congratulations to the Community of Troncatti Home for preparing 40 young people to take up Jobs through the Bosco Skill Mission programme and equipping another 40 with fluency in English language and Basic Computer Skills through the Spring Time Youth Ministry. The maiden attempt of conducting a Spring Time Youth Ministry for the youth of Manipur and Nagaland who were awaiting their Cl. X and Cl. XII examination results attracted 40 youngsters who claim to have had a rich experience of togetherness and learning. It has also motivated few young people to respond to the call of the Lord.

Through these centres recently inaugurated and through other relevant programmes we endeavor to impart quality education and formation to young people in the Don Bosco

way. I am happy that some of our Institutions have initiated Parallel Schools while others are partnering with the Child Friendly Guwahati Project to cater to the education of the deprived children. This is a concrete way of sharing the dream of Don Bosco who believed in the transforming power of education. Ÿ Do you want to do something good?

Educate the young.Ÿ Do you want to do something holy?

Educate the young.Ÿ Do you want to do something very holy?

Educate the young.Ÿ Do you want to do something divine?

Educate the young. Amongst divine things this is the most divine of all!” (Don Bosco, MB, XIII, 629).

In our service to the young people, especially the poor and needy, we are encouraged by the words of Jesus: "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did unto me." (Mt 25, 40). May this certainty drive us, as it did Don Bosco to meet each youth without prejudice, believing in the seed of goodness that is in each one and making our own the concerns, hopes and joys of our young people. In this way the words said of Don Bosco can also be said of each one of us 'He looked into their eyes and saw a great future. They looked into his eyes and found hope for their life'.

Affectionately,

Sr. Elizabeth George FMAProvincial

Two seeds lay side by side in the fertile spring soil. The first seed said, “I want to grow! I want

to send my roots deep into the soil beneath me, and thrust my sprouts through the earth's crust above me… I want to unfurl my tender buds like banners to announce the arrival of spring… I want to feel the warmth of the sun on my face and the blessing of the morning dew on my petals!” And so she grew.

The second seed said, “I am afraid. If I send my roots into the ground below, I don't know what I will encounter in the dark. If I push my way through the hard soil above me I may damage my delicate sprouts… what if I let my buds open and a snail tries to eat them? And if I were to open my blossoms, a small child may pull me from the ground. No, it is much better for me to wait until it is safe”. A yard hen scratching around in the early spring ground for food found the waiting seed and promptly ate it.

Yes, those of us who refuse to risk and grow get swallowed up by life. Life is meaningful for those who allow themselves to grow. The vision of the future will shape the present. If we are prepared for the changes that will inevitably come we will always be a step ahead and ready for it at most times. No one can predict the future but we can be prepared for most eventualities. We need to have an attitude that enable us to open up and ready to take any risk. The longest journey begins with a single step. The adventure ahead awaits our decision. Until we take our first step, our adventurous journey cannot begin.

Discovering our freedom of choosing our own attitudes towards life's challenges will affect our rate of success and happiness in life enormously. Accepting responsibility is accepting challenge and accepting challenges throw open the doors and the windows through which glorious opportunities and achievements enter our lives.

“No one can predict

the future but we can

be prepared for most

eventualities”.

FAITH EXPOSURE PROGRAM

Created in his image, I can't but be a missionary” was the theme for the

7th FAITH EXPOSURE programme, February 24 - March 1, 2015 at St. Xavier's Church, Tamulpur, Assam. There were 410 part ic ipants f rom the formation houses of 26 religious Congregations.

We, the Intensive Juniorate Sisters of FMA India and the postulants had the privilege of taking part in this great mega event. It commenced with the official Inauguration in the presence of His

Grace, Most Rev. John Moolachira, Archbishop of Guwahati, His Grace, Most R e v. T h o m a s M e n a m p a r a m b i l , Archbishop Emeritus of Guwahati and present Apostolic Administrator of Jowai Diocese, Fr. Varghese, Vicar General, Archdiocese of Guwahati, Fathers, Sisters, Brothers, Aspirants, Postulants and Novices.

We had experienced Fathers and Sisters as our resource persons who spoke at length on the concepts of a missionary life, love for Word of God and the

which the groups presented a tentative time table and activities for the Youth Pasch. Every detail of the celebration was discussed and responsibilities were assigned to the members. Each cluster received a flex and resource materials for Youth Pasch 2015.

On March 29, the S isters had a meaningful liturgical celebration of Palm Sunday. Holding palms in their hands and chanting hymns they walked in a procession from ARO to the chapel of

Holy Child Convent where Fr. Abhilash V.J, SDB presided over the Eucharistic Celebration highlighting the significance of the Paschal mystery. Before lunch, the S isters expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Sr. Annie Inchenat, the Sisters of the Community of ARO and the organisers of the Training programme. strategies to renew our religious fervor. The inspiring talks gave us insights on Evangelization, the Healing ministry and works of charity. The personal experiences shared by the Fathers and Sisters stirred us to deepen our thirst for God.

We were divided into 20 groups with 18 or 19 members each for village touring. We left for our respective villages at 10 am and returned at 4 pm. Before leaving some mission tips were given b y H i s G ra c e , M o s t Re v. J o h n Moolachira. Every evening we shared the day's experience. It was like a battery charging us for the next day.

The early morning adoration and other p raye r m o m e nt s h e l p e d u s to experience the life of Jesus as He always prayed before he set out on his mission. We were happy to meet the people, speak to them, especially the catholic families and to create in them a spirit of prayer and faith that God always sustains us and never abandons us. Everything made us feel that we are created in His image; I can't but be a missionary to all irrespective of caste, colour and creed. The language of Love is what we use in communicating the Gospel of Christ.

On February 28 evening, we had the evaluation of our faith exposure programme followed by a special Rosary procession with lighted candles where even the village folk joined us singing praises to our Blessed Mother.

Impressions and touching moments

As we stepped into the land of Tamulpur several things captured our attention.

We were really impressed by the religious from different formation houses coming together for the common mission of spreading the Good News to the people w i t h o u t a ny d i s c r i m i n at i o n . T h e guidelines of our resource persons inspired us to be zealous missionaries. Was it not the year of Consecrated Life t h a t c h a l l e n g e d u s to b e j o y f u l messengers of Christ? Yes that is what we exactly did with much joy.

We were taken up by the simplicity of the people in the village, the openness of hearts, their welcoming attitude, the rich culture of each tribe and their unique way of acknowledging a person. The little inconveniences gave us a pinch of missionary life especially that of language. But the language of LOVE and the language of the HEART conquer all barriers. We can proudly say that God is always with us in every moment of our life especially when encountering people of other faiths. We felt the invisible hand of God working actively in each one of us which strengthened our Christian and religious vocation. The joy of being messengers of the Good News will be inscribed in the hearts of all. We are grateful to God for the golden opportunity we had to experience missionary life. It was indeed a memorable experience!

ST.MARY'S,MALIGAON

Thank You, Sr. Mariana Kujur

She walked with pain; and never a word said she; but we learn a lot from

her.” We were with Sr. Mariana for one year and seven months. She was calm and composed in the face of suffering and pain. She often went to visit our Lady and offered flowers. Whenever any of us offered flowers to our Lady, she was the most grateful person, she would bless us. When asked for prayer and advice, she often said, “Don't be discouraged, Jesus loves you.” She always reminded us to live in the presence of God. We had lots of fun with her a n d e n j oye d h e r l ov i n g presence among us. Every aspirant witnessed her great love for Jesus, Mary and J o s e p h . T h e v i r t u e s o f h u m i l i t y, g rat i t u d e a n d patience were outstanding in her. With faith we believe that her heavenly intercession will do much more than her earthly presence. We miss her

but we rejoice with her because she has 'fought the good fight' here on earth and is now enjoying the beautiful place prepared for her by God from all Eternity. With gratitude in our hearts we bow to the will of God. Adieu dear Sr. Mariana.

Mariana.

Sr.Jessy Nedumala in her welcome speech, encouraged the students who had strived hard to put up the exhibition within a short span of time. She advised the children to nurture a strong will power to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach full potential which are the keys to unlock the door to personal excellence. 'An Exhibition is a platform to showcase ones talents and to foster internal growth and development', she said, exhorting the students to give their best shot.

Dr. Mridul Hazarika was deeply touched by the solemn environment that prevailed within the school premises. He felt that there was a lot of enthusiasm and eagerness among the students of this very renowned institution to deliver their best. He said that education in the past was based on traditions but education today is based on information. But education without depth becomes

meaningless even though a student might have all the information. So, he urged the students, whom he addressed as friends, to explore the depths of knowledge. He supplemented his speech with three short stor ies highlighting the virtues of human life. He also inspired the students to think, to ponder, to analyze, to create, to keep the doors of their mind open and welcome a better tomorrow and build a better nation. His speech was indeed very inspiring. He was then called to cut the ribbon and declare the exhibition open.

The tremendous effort invested by the students was predominantly evident in all the projects put up them. The depiction of smart cities in the form of futuristic models by the students of class XII is worthy of praise. They made intricate models of planned future cities w h i c h w a s a w e l l r e s e a r c h e d presentation.

The students of class X made working models of different sources of energy like hydraulic energy, geo- thermal stations, sound energy, wind energy etc. The presentation was inexplicably excellent. The presentation made by class IX was a comprehensive coverage of ISRO, the various satellites launched from India and also the satellites to be launched in future. It was research based and deserves appraise. The students of class VIII presented their project on ECOLOGY. They depicted the hazardous factors responsible for causing ecological imbalance and also solutions to reinstate the balance of ecology. The extensive analysis on this project deserves praise.

The students of class VII went a step ahead to depict the production of silk in Sualkuchi, Kamrup Dt., Assam. They c o v e r e d t h e w h o l e p r o c e s s o f production of silk from silkworm. The students accumulated information as well as materials to make their project successful. The students of class VI presented an interesting project. They brought an airport to life by actually emulating the various activities taking place in an airport area. They also dealt with other elements of aviation. The students of class V went with time and presented a project which was indeed the in- topic of the present time. They chose to highlight the plant kingdom as their Green Friends and covered almost every aspect of human life related to green plants.Their presentation with superfluous narratives deserves praise.

The primary wing also gave an excellent presentation with a holistic approach.

The KG students depicted the creative world of their age by dressing as animal, birds etc. The students of class I portrayed the different seasons that occur during a year. The students of class II showed different animals of the animal kingdom. They dressed up as different animals. The students of class III portrayed how necessary it is to educate the girl child. They prepared charts, models etc. to support their view. The students of class IV presented models of various means of transport and communication right from the time when the wheel was invented to the present day supersonic systems.

The Guides of St. Mary's Higher Secondary School prepared a segment exhibiting different elements of this international organization. They hung posters of their founder Lord Baden Powell and co-Foundress Lady Baden Powell and different things used by them to support their cause, like - tent, flagpole, watch tower, stretcher, ladder, swing, fire, plates and dishes, multipurpose gadgets and charts. Their presentation did give the onlookers a thorough idea.

A full-scale view of all the classes in St. Mary's Higher Secondary School was a worthwhile journey .The exhibition of the year 2015 was very successful and there is no doubt about it.

“Education is the birth right of every child”. Heeding the urgent call of Pope Francis, the community of St. Mary's Guwahati moved towards the neighbourhood reaching out to the poor and disadvantaged children, offering them quality education, who otherwise would never have an opportunity to enter into a school. The second year of the Parallel School started its journey on January 20, 2015. Sr. Fatima Kashungnao who with great care and with the support of the Sisters, coordinated this significant project of providing quality education to the children of the neighbourhood.

First of all, with zeal and enthusiasm Sr. Fatima Kashungnao and Miss Genevieve Bara went around making a survey of the neighborhood. The guardians and parents were a little apprehensive about sending their wards to school because of financial problems. There was a lot of prejudice or fear in their minds of being converted to Christianity. They visited many slum areas as their mission. Finally, Sr.Fatima was able to convince the parents and twenty six children who had never been to a play school were enrolled.

Presently, there are 15 children in the K.G class and 26 children in the Nursery class. Their classes are held from 2.30 to 5.00pm. Miss Genevieve Bara is in-charge of the K.G Class and Miss Anita Horo and Mrs. Anna Rai take care of the Nursery section.

The Parallel school participates in all the school functions along with the regular day school students. They take part in the various competitions organized by the school. The Parallel School functions according to the normal school session (January to December) and follows the same course of studies.

A YOUTH PASCH INDEED!

It was already twilight when fifty-six enthusiastic young girls hailing from

Borduria, T insukia and Dibrugarh gathered at Tinsukia on March 31,2015 for Youth Pasch 2015. Little did they know that such an event could change their lives and could give a face-lift to their Catholic faith and outlook of the same. The Sisters-in-charge of the animation in the Tinsukia cluster were Sr. Teresa Jojo, Sr. Kindo Mariam and Sr. Khangchian Monica.

The ice-breaking session made everyone feel at home . The Easter Triduum were spent meaningfully with input sessions, prayer moments and other engaging activities. The re-enactment of the Passover Meal on Holy Thursday brought home the significance of the salvific mystery and the Eucharistic meal. The girls also got the opportunity to re-enact four of the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday at the parish. The young artists with the help of the Sisters, did wonderfully

well. An hour- long session on the three days was conducted by Rev. Fr. Nazarius Toppo, Rector, Don Bosco, Tinsukia who availed himself also for the Sacrament of Reconciliation along with two of his confreres on Holy Saturday. All the liturgical celebrations were held at the parish.

From the evaluation and sharing of the different group representatives, it was evident that the girls did have a very enriching time. Thanks to the host Community, Sr. Kaini Martha, the Animator and the Sisters for the minute preparations and for the care and attention extended to all. Due to the inclement weather, we couldn't have the walking Easter picnic as planned. However, this did not in any way dampen the spirit of the Easter joy. Sheba.' Sr. Susngi Pasqualina who was all decked up with costumes worthy of a queen had many strange wishes, all of which were complied with by her active 'subjects.' When all were hungry enough, a sumptuous lunch was served which was relished by all. After this, without much ado, everyone left for their respective destinations like little Mary Magdalenes bubbling with joy to spread the Good News of the Lord.

Nonon Gangsa, one of the boarders of Little Flower, Dibrugarh who received Baptism last July has this to say about the Youth Pasch...

“I never got an opportunity to attend such a Youth Pasch before. It was indeed really amazing. In fact, I had no idea about the Triduum before Easter. But after attending the Youth Pasch, I came to know the meaning of the three most important days. Many of us did not know the meaning of the Passover meal but the beautiful re-enactment of i t gave us a better understanding and cleared all our doubts.

Frankly speaking, I had no idea about the Passion of Christ. During the way of the Cross at the Parish Church complex, I got a chance to act in it. It was at this time that I really felt the pain and sorrow that Jesus went through during His long journey to Calvary. The small act depicting the women crying for Jesus really moved me to tears and brought me closer to God. My love for and faith in Jesus increased even more.

The experience of the Youth Pasch taught us the importance of cooperating with each other and living united, and values like patience, humility and kindness towards all. It gave us the opportunity to learn more about Jesus and bring us nearer to God. It was like travelling together towards our true home where we can be happy forever with God and His angels. I am grateful to the Sisters for giving us such a wonderful experience which will remain with me/us all through our lives, I'm sure.”

The official jubilation began at 8.30 a.m. with the solemn Eucharistic celebration, which was held at St. John Bosco Church, Jollang. The presence of 13 Priests, 18 Religious Sisters, many dignitaries and 800 young people from all over Itanagar added joy and colour to the celebration. Fr. Kottarathil Mathai, sdb, Parish Priest, St. Mary's Church, Itanagar, was the main celebrant. In his homily he highlighted three points:

ü It is a fitting day to acknowledge St. John Bosco as one of the greatest gifts to the Church and to the young people.

ü St. John Bosco can be summed up in three words, Father, Teacher and Friend of the young people.

ü The secret behind Don Bosco's success was his deep relationship with God.

To mark the Bi-Centenary of St. John Bosco's birth, soon after Holy Mass a memorial of Don Bosco was unveiled near the approach road to Don Bosco College by Felix Bamang, Education Parliamentary Secretary (PS) and other senior members of Don Bosco Alumni.

It was followed by a Cultural Programme in Don Bosco College campus. The huge number of young people gathered added joy, happiness and co lour to the celebration. Youths from Jollang village, Don Bosco College Hostel, Auxilium

were disastrous. Many families were displaced and especially women and children were made victims of this violence. It affected the remote areas of Sonitpur, Kokrajhar, Chirang and Bongaigaon districts of Assam. The victims belonged to the Adivasi, Santhali and Bodo communities. Hundreds of them fled villages and were sheltered in t h e re l i e f c a m p s s e t u p b y t h e government in the local schools and open places. Many houses were burnt and fields and agriculture destroyed. In most areas where paddy was ready to be

harvested, the attackers burnt crops thus depriving the people of their livelihood. Children, women and old people were the worst hit. Relief camps were opened. People suffered due to lack of necessities like medicines, food and clothes.

Twenty -two camps were in the vicinity of three FMA Centres, namely Bongaigaon, Dotma and Majbat. On hearing the news, the Sisters under the leadership of Sr. Annie Inchenat, Director ARO sprang into action. They collected blankets, clothes and foodstuffs which they distributed in 14 camps. The Sisters were constantly in touch with the suffering people, supporting and encouraging them.

Sr. Annie Inchenatl and Sr. Mary Alexander made the first visit to the camps on January 2, 2015. On their return, Sr. Annie contacted Sr. Elizabeth George Provincial, and gave a detailed account of the situation of the people in the camps, their needs and problems. Sr. Elizabeth George agreed to extend relief to the suffering people. She created an awareness among the Sisters who were attending the Chapter transmission at St. Mary's Convent, Guwahati on the immediate action to be taken to reach out to the victims.

The Sisters readily agreed to collect clothes, detergents and other immediate r e q u i r e m e n t s . S o m e o f t h e m volunteered to coach the Class X and

Sr. KUJUR Mariana: A brief profile

So we do not lose hope. Even though our physical being is gradually

decaying, yet our spiritual being is renewed day after day. And this small and temporary trouble we suffer will bring us a tremendous and eternal glory, much greater than the trouble”. (2 Cor. 4:16-17).

Sr. Mariana Kujur was born on 4th December 1949, at Timona Jokai, Dibrugarh, Assam and was baptized on 1st January 1950 by Rev. Fr. Gerard Mandarville SDB, at Dibrugarh parish. She was the eldest of seven children, five brothers and two sisters. Her fourth brother is Fr. Lawrence Kujur, a Diocesan Priest. Born and brought up in a joint family rich in faith and fervor she learnt many valuable lessons of tolerance, sharing, generosity and other human and social values which enabled her to be an authentic religious.

In 1958, her parents returned to their original place – Kapasgutra, Ranchi, Jharkhand. Being the eldest, she had to take care of her siblings and almost missed going to School. But on her insistence to attend the school, her parents finally consented to her desire and sent her to school. She was excellent in her studies and stood always first in the class, at the same time she always rendered help to those who were weak in studies. Her parents educated her with firm and kind ways. She was very active in the Parish and she served as the secretary in the sodality

group. She was very much involved in the youth activities in the village.

After the matriculation, while she was staying with the family of her maternal uncle, in Kolkatta, Mariana happened to visit the shrine of Our Lady of Bandel and the community of Auxilium Convent Bandel thereafter. The Superior, Sr. Josephine Goad invited her to join the Salesian Sisters. Young Mariana was i m p r e s s e d b y t h e k i n d n e s s a n d welcoming attitude of the Sisters and felt attracted to become a Sister in the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. Further, after reading the life of St. John Bosco and St. Maria Domenica Mazzarello, she was determined to listen to God's call. Later Sr. Josephine Goad came to visit her parents and they consented to her wish to follow God's call.

Young Mariana with lots of enthusiasm and fervor entered the pre-aspirantate in September 1969 at Bandel and the following year she was sent to St. Mary's Maligaon. Thus she began her vocational journey in the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians. She entered the Postulancy on 29th September 1971

In 1976, she completed her Pre-University course in Shillong and she completed her B.Com in 1979. In the same year she was sent to Rome to study for three years at Auxilium, Rome. While in Rome she made her Perpetual Profession on 5th August, 1980 in Mazzarelli, Mornese, Italy. In 1984 she joined the B.Ed course at St. Mary's College, Shillong. In 1991 she was asked to do the formators course in Rome for three months.

Sr. Mariana in various capacities such as Superior, Novice Mistress, Provincial Councilor, Teacher - worked hard to accomplish her responsibilities with dedication. In 2011 February due to her ill health she was brought to Auxilium Provincial House, Guwahati. Later in August 2012 she was shifted to St. Mary's Convent Maligaon under medical care. The last five years of her life was spent in suffering which she accepted as God's will. She continued her religious life with serenity and the sentiments of our blessed Mother “Behold I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me according to your will”. Her motto was: To be an element

of joy and peace. This she practiced all through her life. She was humble, lived the virtues of simplicity and sincerity. Her preference in life was to teach Catechism to the villagers and infact on Sundays she loved meeting the villagers. She was very creative and innovative in her mission. She had special devotion to Sacred Heart, St. Joseph and our Lady and she inculcated it in others.

Her companions recall her telling “I want to die sitting on a chair like Don Bosco. I want to die on a day dedicated to Mary and in the month of St. Joseph”. And that is what really happened. Death knocked at her door while she was sitting on a chair on Saturday, 14th March 2015.

Dear Sr. Mariana, as we wish you goodbye we thank you for all that you have been to each one of us. We your loving Sisters of Guwahati Province, teachers, pupils past and present, Salesian Co-operators, parents, friends, relatives and all here present thank you for the footprints of good works and deeds you have left for us. Help us to keep aflame the zeal for evangelization allowing ourselves to become the message of God for all peoples particularly the young. Intercede for us, for our youth, for the province, for vocations and for the entire North East. Goodbye! May you enjoy forever the beatific vision of God, whom you served faithfully and generously.

Goodbye! May you enjoy forever the beatific vision of God, whom you served faithfully and generously.

already in an advanced stage, no treatment could cure her. Initially it was not very easy for her to accept this reality but the support and prayers of her Sisters and loved ones who stood by her enabled her to face this challenge which made her journey more meaningful with the Lord. The loving care and attention that she received from the Sisters of the Province and her family members who attended to her every need with love, attention and commitment helped her to face all pain with serenity. She thanked everyone who visited her. She wished she could live longer to work for the Lord. But the Lord of life had other plans for her. She was reconciled with the Lord who knocked at her door on May 9, the birthday of Mother Mazzarello, our co-foundress.

Sr. Ashiphro was a woman of great capacity, capable of performing many things at the same time. She was

intelligent, strong willed, and ready for any service in favour of the young. She was a woman of strong convictions and very daring. On September 14, 1996, when Little Flower School Imphal was attacked by the militants, she showed great courage in safeguarding our presence and mission at Imphal. She was hard working, upright and open in her dealings and frank and free in her approach. She was the first one from her village to become a religious and the first to return to the Father with her lamp lit. She will intercede for all of us as she herself assured her youngest sister, Celine Lidgisa “I will pray for you”.

She shared the mystery of the Cross Lord intensely for the last few months in her sickness which was unfolded to her in a most unexpected manner. May she enjoy the blessed presence of her Divine Spouse and sing His praises for all eternity along with the saints and the angels in heaven!
