    new generation global FM platform.

    The FM400 8x4 Tippers are high performance vehicles with

    unmatched features designed for handling heavy loads at a

    relentless pace in difficult terrain. It has a highly fuel efficient

    powerful engine backed up with reliable driveline , a strong chassis

    & body coupled with bigger tyres, high ground clearance, safe &

    efficient cabin with high reliability

    The high payload capacity & an outstanding performance make it

    an ideal choice for off road & on road operations

    Whether it is coal overburden, iron or other mineral ores,

    limestone, marble movements or demanding applications like

    irrigation work or aggregate movement, the FM400 provides

    The Volvo FM cabins continues Volvo’s leadership in offering the

    safest & highest productive cabins in the industry. The aerodynam-

    ic, spacious, air conditioned cabin with highest visibility, an adjust-

    able steering column with a good grip on steering wheel coupledwith power steering provides maximum comfort to the drivers. Also

    the large display with easy to read information & the controls with

    gauges positioned in the cluster offers maximum information in

    single view to the drivers

    FUEL EFFICIENT NEW GENERATION ENGINE

    The Volvo D13A400 engine offers a high power & an excellent

    torque of 2000Nm at 1050-1400 rpm. A wide economic speed

    range of 1050-1600 r/min gives the driver to get the maximum fuel

    efficiency

    • Volvo D13A, 13 litre 6-cylinder -inline diesel engine produces

    400 HP ( 294 Kw) at 2100 Rpm

    • Turbocharger and intercooler provides increased power with

    less fuel consumption at a reduced emission levels

    • Overhead camshaft drive fitted with vertically installed unit

    injectors

    • Electronic fuel injection regulation , controlled by Volvo EMS (

    Engine management system) based on temperature, pressure,

    load & speed ensuring precise & optimum fuel injection based

    on the requirements

    • Exhaust brake power at 2300 rpm of 170 KW to enable higher

    average speed while driving downhill without overheating the

    wheel brakes

    BETTER FUEL EFFICIENCY

    The D13A400 features Volvo EMS (Engine Management System),

    a wholly electronically controlled system which provides precise

    and efficient engine control.

    The engine control module takes in data from several sensors

    on the engine and the vehicle. The control unit compares current

    readings with stored parameters and adjusts fuel quantity and

    injection timing accordingly, throughout the engine’s operation.Volvo EMS is integrated with the truck’s electronic system and

    permits advanced communication with the driver via the informa-

    tion display.

    The D13A400’s gear driven camshaft ensures precise control over

    the unit injectors and valve timing. The unit injectors are posi-

    tioned vertically and centrally which provides extremely fast, well

    controlled injection and symmetrical distribution of the fuel in the

    combustion chamber. EMS controls the fuel injection via electro-

    magnetic valves in each injector. It is controlled entirely electroni-

    cally. The injection pressure can be as high as 2000 bar, resulting

    in a very fast injection sequence. The injectors are supplied with

    fuel via a shared duct in the cylinder head. Pre-circulation ensuresthe correct fuel temperature.

    LONGER SERVICE LIFE

    Volvo engine management system ensures longer service life by

    eliminating the risk for severe wear or major damage to the engine

    namely

    • Engine protection at cold starts - limits revolution until oil has

    circulated through the engine

    • Raised idling speed when the engine is cold - faster warm-up

    to attain operating temperature

    • Reduction in fuel supply if engine temperature rises too high

    • Smoke limitation

    • Over reviving protection

    The EMS display helps in quick diagnostics and avoids time

    delay compared to trial and error methods. It also provides clear

    & structures indications about the truck status and other vehicle

    information. Fuel consumption & trip data can be read out from the

    driver information system display

    FULLY SYNCHRONISED GEARBOX

    Volvo FM400 tipper is fitted with fully synchronized 14-Speed

    splitter - range gearbox matched perfectly to the engine charac-

    teristics. Close & well balanced ratios make it easy for the truck to

    climb steep gradients and facilitate smooth acceleration

    • Volvo VT2214B, 14-Speed with fully synchronized 14-Speed

    splitter - range gearbox with cable controlled shifting

    • Extreme low 16.86:1 improves startability when hauling heavy

    loads in difficult driving conditions• Pressure - feed lubrication with in-built oil pump & full flow oil

    filter ensure high reliability and long life

    • Gearbox oil cooler maintains oil temperature & hence oil quality

    for longer service intervals

    DRIVE AXLES

    Volvo FM400 tipper is fitted with heavy duty hub reduction tandem

    drive axles where the main reduction takes place in the hub and

    hence reduces the forces and stresses on drive shafts and crown

    wheel pinion. The rear axle is matched to tyre size & economic

    engine speed

    • Volvo RT3210HV Hub reduction axle

    • Robust differential locks improve grip on slippery surfaces. Dif-

    ferential locks is available between the wheels & also between

    the axles

    CHASSIS

    • Completely factory built , ready to use vehicle, including body,

    cabin etc ensures highest quality from bumper to bumper

    • Robust engine sump and radiator - protection plate fitted below

    front bumper , minimises the risk of an unplanned stop

    • A 5mm thick inner chassis liner from engine to rear end of

    the chassis provides additional reinforcement to the frame ,

    reduces stress on the chassis

    • Parabolic front springs allow high spring deflection and low

    internal friction in the spring package hence reduced stress on

    the chassis frame. It also enables better riding comfort at high

    average speeds

    • Rubber springs between the rear springs and rear axle also

    add to better riding comfort under all type of road conditions

    • Low turning circle due to larger wheel angles and a short wheel

    base give excellent maneuverability on narrow roads and site

    operations

    BRAKES

    • Volvo FM400 comes with Z cam self adjusting brakes. The brake

    shoes being fully floating type, centre to the brake drum as they

    wear out. The braking force being evenly distributed the braking

    is efficient and effective. Brake lining wear is reduced tempera-

    tures are lower and service life of the brakes is extended. Since

    activation of the brakes are faster and less air supply is required

    to apply the brakes, this gives a better feeling of control

    HIGH GROUND CLEARANCE

    • The Volvo FM400 tippers large size tyres along with a straight

    I beam front axle provides increased ground clearance. In addi-

    tion the engine is lifted higher and provided with a heavy-duty

    sump guard covering the complete sump

    TOUGHER TYRES

    Volvo FM400 tippers have always been at home on the on road or

    on the off road , in construction sites or in the mines - maintaining

    a high performance level across gradients and through extreme

    dust and heat conditions

    • Volvo FM400 tipper is fitted with 12x24 off-highway pattern

    tyres which are designed exclusive for tough off road

    conditions in mines. Models with box-body are provided with11R20 tyre on-road tyres. The selection of tyres depends on

    the usage conditions which means longer life and better drive

    control

    OPTIMISED BODY SPECIFICATIONS

    • Front mounted single tipping cylinder reduces the tipping force

    and minimses the stress on the chassis frame since the tipping

    force is transferred directly to the front axle ( with under body

    centre mounted tip cylinders, high tipping forces are transmit-

    ted to the middle of the chassis frame)

    • Front mounted tipping cylinder exerts less stress on the body

    due to lower tipping force

    • Tip cylinder fitted above the chassis frame is well protected

    from dust and dirt showered by the tyres

    • The front - mounted tip cylinder with trunion base and a strong

    foundation gives better tip stability and withstand 9 Tonne

    metre side loads while tipping on uneven ground

    • Tip stabilizer fitted between the body & chassis frame further

    improves stability

    • All-welded body, sand blasted and sprayed with 4 layers of

    primer / top coat

    • C-Section subframe with flexible attachment in the front and

    rigid attachment at the rear
