1. Use every social occasion as a networking opportunity. Have your business cards ready if

someone asks for one. Even if you are running to Wal-mart for dish soap you should bring cards or fl yer's with you because you rather be well prepared than not prepared at all.

2. Put an article about you or your business in a local newspaper. This will help your business out

a lot in the long run because you can always place this as a fi ll-in if some one ask "Hey i never herd of your company before" then you can say "They did a piece about me in the local newspaper you should check it out"

3. Model what you sell. If you are a web designer, have a spectacular website. If you sell clothes

make sure your own fashion statement is fl awless and creates the appropriate image.

4. Create a unique style or logo that make you memorable.

Establish yourself or your logo as a brand so people remember you. Ed Hardy did it as a person. Coca- Cola does it as a logo. You can do it too!

5. Have a compelling response to the question "What do you do?" or

"Tell me about yourself" Make it brief and interesting. If you only have 30 seconds, give them enough of an idea about what you do so that they seek you out to hear more later. Even in a situation where you have more time, be brief but to the point and then allow them to ask

questions. Their questions will give you an idea of their particular interest.

6. Use every social network at your disposal (facebook, twitter, skype, myspace, etc..) This

helps you market to potential customers or partners and also helps build a presence in the ever growing cyber space.

7. Offer to give a talk at a business meeting or teach a course at a school or training center. Use

your expertise to generate interest in you and/or your business.

8. Jump on the next big thing if you can. This mean if something or someone has a buzz than fi nd

a way you can incorporate your business in that and it will always make you look fresh and hip to new

customers and partners. for example: Empress multi-media will be hugh (a quick plug-in

for my up and coming partners... you like!)

9. Make a list of testimonials from customers to use with potential

customers or employers. Make these testimonials part of your brochure and/or website, and have as a separate document to put into proposals.

10. Always, Always, Always stand by your company. if you promise

something or guarantee something by all means try to stand by that becasue unlike publicity, bad marketing can destroy a company before it even takes off.

TEN WAYS TO MARKET YOURSELF IN A COST-EFFICIENT WAY

by: Jacquan j-nova Coleman

There are many ways to market yourself. some better than others, some hire people to do the marketing for them, some use themselves as

a marketing tool. Have you herd the saying "any publicity is good publicity?" Marketing works the same way. You got some really good marketing ways out there that if you had a 100,000+ budget then you will be able to use your resources to fi nd the best ways to market yourself and since this ain't Forbes magazine and I'm not Warren Buffet im going to give you ten ways to market yourself and get the best bang for your buck...

TATS BY VANCE

Where/when did you become interested in tattoo art?

I’ve done tats for about 15 years. I’ve always liked to draw, but I was exposed to “people as canvasses” watching my boys @ Big Dogs in Columbus OH. I was an apprentice and learned the art while cleaning around the shop. I was also the “fl ash or custom guy” at a lot of places. I actually learned the “art” of tattooing when I spent time overseas visiting my England family. I’ve also done men and women’s hair for 16yrs. I fi gured I could learn anything after that. I also have a graffi ti background (shhhhhhhh).

What made you want to do tattoo art as a business?

People in shops that are horrible, and actually making a living at this. The worst part is that they don’t understand the background, lifestyle, or passion for the art of tattoo. One day my brother came to me proud of his new lua loa tattoo. He showed me his arms and I was heated! That’s when I opened up my kit and started rebuilding.

Have you found business to be “booming” in Orlando with Tattoo Art?

I don’t know about other people but I have a waiting list.

Where do your creations come from? What is your inspiration?

I see pictures in my head and create them. I see art in everything and everyday life. Tattooing is perfect for me because it’s a “hands on” art. I sit and meet with each person before creating their piece, an in depth consultation before each session. I get to know them and the image they want to have be a permanent part of their body & why. A client has to trust you to give them what they want. And as an artist I want my “living, breathing art” to be so impressive that each time the client looks in the mirror they say to themselves “that the shyt!” I want them to be proud to wear my art. With my graffi ti background I fi nd great pleasure in analyzing people & then “tagging” them! (Laughing)

What is the most intricate or most challenging piece you have done?

I’m currently working on a space fl ower, Asian type piece. All the outlines are different colors and there’s mad dimension and color to the piece. It’s like arm tat in 3d.

How should a person prepare for getting a tattoo? Is there anything special they should do before their session?

I actually prepare a person to get a tattoo that’s part of the process for me. First is the drawing, which usually comes from a concept or magazine. (I never

hat’s up Orlando?! This week’s Talk of Orlando is artist elite among permanence in the world. “Tagging” people nationally, Vance Brown of TatsbyVance has made more than just an ordinary impression on our city. With colorful imagination and skill, he can make anyone’s desire to advertize their passion with Tattoo Art, some of the most

impressive I have seen…and in Florida there’s defi nitely a wide range of examples to compare too.

use fl ash) Then there’s consultation about allergies and cleanliness. Then there’s placement and pain management. Yes, I said pain m a n a g e m e n t . I have an

acupuncturist that I work with (Smirking) Yes! She can numb points in your skin as well as relax the squeamish or “kidskin” clients. I also use some of the

natural numbing agents like Tramile and Dr.Numb. I always have gender specifi c assistants to help those that are uncomfortable.Out of all the work you have

done, you must have had some strange/funny/unusual situations. Any you want to share?

Ok, fi rst is I once had 3 people faint in a row, and all because they hadn’t eaten. Or the time I was at a shop up north and I was going to do

an arm tat, the lady got completely naked! God times! (Laughing) Or the time I did the KFC logo on a guy. Oh & the time I was working on a Hispanic couple and a letter fell out of the lady’s purse. It was a booty letter that she had written to some guy in jail that was about to get out & all hell broke loose after that. Let’s just say there were a lot of expletives thrown mostly in Spanish, blood & police involved.

Have you ever refused to create/tat a person? Why?

Yes if you have a skin condition, if you are visibly ill, if you have bad body odor, if you’re drunk, and the most important is if you hinder the relaxing atmosphere. You have to have a certain bond and mindset with the client. Constant distractions only hinder the process.

Where can a person see your work? Or contact you if they are interested in having you tat them?

All over the place. I’m currently working on my

site, but I have so many pictures on face book and on twitter. Google even has some of my pics.

Any shout outs? All my pure music group people, Jay “action”

Jackson, Christian ”Cheeqs” Lucca, Tramille “trac” Carty (my dude) my 2 moms… birth & in law. My Mom especially for not killing me as a kid, allowing me to live on to tattoo! Fran, ”my tenth girl”, Pennacio, my brother chuck!, X (LIL ME) Figgy, Jess, most important MARI, My woman for pushing me to draw & tattoo every day. WITH OUT U THERES NO ME! Jeannine “aunt jack” Corbin, my partner in crime & acupuncturist, Marianne (the Chinese woman from soul train) Suyat, my twin sister in laws Maggie & Maria for basically letting me tat anything I want ! John “kocky” Hamilton for showing mad love. Ricky P., Everyone that has ever been tatted by me thanks for wearing my soul...power moves the world! & you (Kris of TalkofOrlando.com) for doing this article & always being super cool!

From the beginning both groups have had a passion for promotion, each coming from different avenues

to come together for the perfect one-2 punch. For years Central Florida has trusted Frontline Promotions to provide authentic, premier headlining events. Pat Nix (Frontline) discovered his passion for promo while studying promotions/marketing in college with Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. this eventually led to the cre-ation of Frontline in 1994. Newest and quickly growing on the scene has been TalkofOrlando.com. TOO started originally as an events promotion website, founded by Jay Walker and Tony Vitale. It was then acquired and de-veloped into one of the leading promotional companies, by Esco Williams and his eclectic team in 2007. With the marriage of the two, other promotional entities had better “man up” in the battle for large followings, for this will be the largest resource for events & networking in Central Florida. I had the great pleasure to get input

from the key players in this major move, all of which seem elated at the prospects of growth and prosperity for everyone. I believe our city is under siege people, and the question is; Are you in? Or are you out? This is BIG news! How did the merger come about?

ESCO: We had been doing business on events with Pat (Frontline) for a few months with the venue Rain Ultra Lounge, and we decided as a collective we would make a much bigger impact on Orlando working to-gether. Both companies will remain intact with its own talent’s we will just be partnered under the same pro-motions umbrella to promote all the major events and corporate clientele.

PAT: We noticed with TOO (TalkofOrlando) a great consistency in what they were doing, and we decided that by combing our databases we would make a better online presence so we both can become much stronger.

One of the biggest mergers in Orlando nightlife is dropping the bomb on the locals! As of April 2011 TalkofOrlando.com and Frontline Promo-tions will be a force to be reckoned with as a combined team of moti-

vated, creative, resourceful and “get it done” type of individuals ! YES YOU HEARD ME RIGHT! Frontline Promotions & TalkofOrlando.com are now the hottest couple in the Orlando night life scene!

We will virally be the largest promotional company in Central Florida. There is a new face/CEO of TalkofOrlando.com, Mr. John Carter? Why that decision?

ESCO: I wanted to take more of a background/behind the scenes type of role to work more with the deejay management & passed some of the daily operations to John who was willing to take on more at the time. What effect do you think this will have on the Orlando nightlife & community?

MISS O..!! (TOO Co-Owner/Director of Operations) : I think that this will give us more of a reach when do-ing charitable events, as far as community is concerned which I really look forward to.

PAT: With the decline in nightlife due to venues go-ing too urban, we can only go up from here and we are pioneers when it comes to authentic urban nightlife events.

ESCO: The biggest effect is we will have the largest data base network of people in the central Florida area for promotions. People are going to see a united front with larger & better events than ever before in Orlando. We will be building a legacy of nightlife for the next generation. It will also give us access to more diverse markets to grow in, such as corporate sponsored events like Mercedes Benz, Hennessey and Moet.

GLINS (TOO Promotions Manager): I think it’s go-ing to be a real good thing; it’s going to bring both fol-lowings together to create huge effect. Both companies do a lot of charity events separately, so coming to-

gether will be even bigger for the community. How do you feel about the partnership? What do

you hope to achieve?

MISS O..!!: I’m really ex-cited, but as everyone who knows me knows, I like to wait and see what each situ-ation can pres-ent. Nothing can be predict-ed. I feel like nothing can be discounted ei-ther. What do I hope to get out of the merger? Besides “lots and lots of

money”? (Laughing) Seriously, I hope this takes TOO & Frontline to the next level of not just promotions but online marketing. Create a whole new way to promote and benefi t our communities and charitable causes, as well as entertain. And “lots, and lots of money! (Laugh-ing Again) In the end, I want TalkofOrlando.com/Front-line to be VIRAL BABY!

DJ BJ (TOO DJ): “I’m looking forward to it. That is more exposure for everybody and better events because of the partnership. As a result I’m looking forward to seeing more creative events like “Trois” and more con-certs as well. The turnouts on our events will improve as well because there’s more promo. It will also help establish myself as a DJ to a much wider audience.

JOHN C (CEO of TOO): I’m excited about the pos-sibilities, this is an awesome time!

GLINS: I hoping to achieve any type of promotions that is going to profi t the community and the company, nationwide. Not just in Orlando! We will have bigger concerts, bigger events & bigger fundraisers that will benefi t a larger base of people. This is a city full of pro-ducers; I also look forward to creating more events to uplift local artists & performers to get Orlando the ex-posure it deserves for its talent. What should Orlando be looking for in the future?

PAT: Orlando can expect consistency in nightlife & other partnerships in the hospitality industry. Expect more partnerships that make sense like TOO & the

PAT: My mother always told me that people shoot at birds in the sky, but if you’re on the ground your noth-ing so…if people aren’t taking shots at you then you’re probably not fl ying high. Being that you’ve been in the game, what do you say to promoters trying to take your spot?

Miss O..!!: There is always going to be competi-tion. Everyone has their ups & downs. Competition is a good thing, you learn from it. It makes us work harder, smarter, and become more resourceful. For example, an emcee wouldn’t be the best without competition. WE WELCOME IT!

When it comes to the race for NBA MVP I

am kind of torn. I know who I would like to win it but I also know that more than one person deserves it. On one hand I think Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls deserves it. Yes he is young but that’s what makes him such a good candidate. The bulls wouldn’t be where they are right now if it wasn’t for rose. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying

that he doesn’t have help, but if you ask me that is just what it is, help. He carried Chicago on his back when Joakim Noah and Carlos Boozer were both out with injuries. He’s the reason that Chicago sits atop the Eastern Conference. He is averaging 24.7 ppg 4.4 rpg and 8.2 apg. If Rose, who is 22, should win the MVP award he will become the youngest player in NBA history to win. So far, the NBA writers and broadcasters (the voters) favor Derrick Rose. Common sense says if the voters are favoring Rose then the race is over. Obviously Orlando Magic coach Stan van Gundy feels the same since he voiced his opinion that Rose is the winner and voting isn’t even over. I like Derrick Rose not only because he is a great point guard that can definitely hold his own with the

best in the league but because he is humble while doing so. If character held any weight in this competition Rose would be the front runner, with Kevin Durant right on his heels.

Speaking of other contenders I can’t ignore the fact that Dwight Howard should be just as much a shoe in for the MVP award as Derrick Rose if not more. Howard is averaging Double-Doubles. The new generation Super Man is averaging 22.5ppg 13.8 rpg and 2.1bpg. If that doesn’t scream MVP then I don’t know what does. The difference between Howard and Rose is the rest of their lineups. Howard and the Magic haven’t had to deal with the amount of injuries to major contributors as Rose has. This basically means that Dwight has had more help than Rose in keeping his team as a relevant contender in the Eastern Conference. And here is where my indecisiveness creates a problem in my making a decision as to who deserves to win. If it’s about numbers then yes Dwight Howard deserves to be MVP. His statistics alone show that he is valuable. What team wouldn’t want Dwight Howard averaging double doubles on their roster? I can’t think of one. Isn’t that the point of the Most Valuable Player? However if you look at the whole picture and not just numbers Derrick Rose comes out on top. His team is in a better position in the standings than t h e Magic and he did it with less

help than Howard. He’s young and handling the pressure like a true vet in

the game. As a point guard Rose is essentially the leader of

his team. He is the coach on the court and for that he deserves to be the 2010-2011

NBA MVP.

Don’t get me wrong there are other players, such as Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Amare’ Stoudemire,

and Chris Paul, who are worthy of winning as well but just not as much as Howard and

Rose, at least in my opinion. I don’t know if it’s because I’m a Libra who is known to be indecisive or because I’m a woman but I had a hard time choosing. When it comes down to it thought I am riding with Derrick Rose and so should you.
