As I sit down to write this month's article I can't help but be amazed at the winter we have just experienced. Today is Sunday, March 22, and I've had my tractor and snow blower up and down my driveway three times. The good thing is that it can't last much longer. One of my mother's favourite things in all the world was mayflowers. Her favourite saying was, "April showers bring mayflowers”. Every spring, my brothers and I would bring home the first bouquet of mayflowers we could find for her. Even though she is no longer with us, every spring I think of her and look for mayflowers and that first robin. She was always so excited when she saw that first robin. I think after this winter I have a better understanding of why my mother was always so thankful to see those signs that winter was over. I have to give some credit where credit is due. Hats off this winter to those Dept. of Transportation people and Nova Scotia Power. I'm sure they will be happy to see that first robin bobbing along. Job well done out our way! We never lost our power and I have no idea how you kept those roads cleared. This good old boy can't thank you enough for a job well done.

All the snow this winter didn't help those of us in the real estate industry. Lots of changes locally as companies struggle to adjust to reduced demand for housing due to tight credit and a changing demographic. A generation ago we had 5 to 10 kids in a family growing up and buying houses. Now, we might have two and at least one of those, if not both, will have to move away to find work. The housing market is like any other market and revolves around supply and demand.

What did you think of the Royal Bank getting millions for creating 150 jobs in Bedford? I guess they may as well have it as the pulp companies. I have a suggestion for our provincial government. Why don't we have a monthly start a business lottery? Here's how it would work....Every month local small business people would submit proposals to expand their business and hire a minimum of say two people. Each month the government would award $1,000,000 in $50,000 amounts to 20 business owners with the best proposals. That would be 40 new jobs. Have the lottery every month for a year and spend $12,000,000 - 12x40 = 480 jobs. Over 10 years you would spend $120,000,000 and create 4800 jobs. If those jobs averaged $30,000 per year x 4800 = $144,000,000 payroll injected into our economy. The provincial income tax rate is 8.79% so the provincial government would get back $12,657,600 per year at the end of the 10 years. I realize that is a perfect scenario and that some business's would fail but what if one of those business people was super successful and created hundreds of jobs. That could easily happen in IT or a web based business. Yes, I know the Royal Bank isn't going to fail but we all know the Royal Bank doesn't need our help and the Royal Bank is not going to fund any start ups.

How long has it been since the Ivany Report? One of the biggest reasons we do not have more job creation is because there is no money to fund good ideas. Oops... I'm starting to

RANT!! I have been doing business in rural Nova Scotia now for 40 years. Every rural community has a few business people or a few families that have been there for years. They have roots in the community and they have survived the good times and the bad times. Most of these people do not trust the banks or the government and feel they have been betrayed by a system that seems to undermine everything they try to do. I know because I've talked to them every day for the last 40 years. They are hard working, stubborn people. Most keep their thoughts to themselves and most would give you the shirts off their backs if you asked them. These are the people who have supported me and my business and these are the people who have earned my undying respect and admiration. These are the people who have the ability to turn our province around if given a chance. Stephen Harper said we suffer from an attitude of defeat. I say we suffer from an attitude of distrust. Most people do not understand the complexity of payroll rebates and perception is reality. I'm struggling to keep my small contracting business going and my small crew working while the bank that makes billions will not renew my line of credit or finance that new house I want to build. Then, my government takes my tax dollars and gives that bank $22,000,000 while some bureaucrat thumps his chest for making the deal. Come on Guys....Perception is reality to most people. Don't misunderstand me, you can't blame the Royal Bank, why wouldn't they take the money? Just business as usual in Nova Scotia.

Well folks, spring is here and I'm dusting off my fishing rod. My uncle always said, "A bad day fishing is better than a good day at work." I remember years ago my daughter Natasha asked what she should look for in a husband. I said, "I don't care as long as he treats you good and fishes." Lo and behold, my son in law Jody is the only guy I know who likes to fish more than me. They are living up in Englehart, Ontario and I'm looking forward to getting up there on a fishing trip with him. Remember to count your blessings folks many have lost loved ones over this winter and my prayers are with you in your time of grief. This can be a tough old world sometimes. I remember saying to Natasha one time, "I think I could have done a better job than God creating this world." She asked me what I meant. I said, "Well, I would have created a more gentle world without so much strife and suffering." She looked at me and said, "So, you would have created a world where people didn't have freedom of choice?" WHOA, sorry God. I guess I'll stick to my real estate business. I do have a blessing I would like to count before I go. My daughter Kim manages our printing business KIMNAT who publishes this flyer. Her husband George works at Canjet. I can’t thank Kim and George enough for all they do. I bought George a snow blower from Gerald Walsh when I sold his property on the West Indian Road. When he came home from work one day there was a sign on George and Kim's lawn, "Best neighbours in Nova Scotia." I guess George has been blowing out his neighbours driveways to help them out this winter. Way to go George! That is paying it forward and Gerald would be tickled pink to know you are helping your neighbours.

Don't Forget to watch for Mayflowers and Robins!
