What is power quality? How reliably can your systemsoperate their loads? That isthe essence of power quality.Power disturbances can involvevoltage, current, or frequencyand typically manifest as dips, swells, harmonic distortion, unbalance, flicker, and tran-sients. These problems can orig-inate in your own power system

or from the utility. Defined interms of magnitude and dura-tion, power disturbances canlast microseconds, or involveoutages of hours or more.

Power quality overview

The costs of poor power qualityThe increasing cost of electricalenergy is driving industries to useenergy as efficiently as possible. Flukepower and energy measuring tools area vital component in gaining controlof those costs. The traditional way ofreducing energy usage is monitoringand targeting (M & T); Monitoring andtargeting determines when and whereenergy is being used, and by doing sodiscovers whether or not that energyis being used effectively. Examplesof this include comparing buildingoccupancy with energy profiles.Simple things like ensuring lightingand heating systems are not being op-erated when a building is unoccupiedcan create significant savings. Otherexamples of energy waste include thepowering of machinery and plantswhen no production is taking place, and leaving equipment in standbymode for extended periods of time. The power and energy logging capa-bilities in Fluke Power Quality toolsenable the user to monitor and targetenergy usage to identify these savings

opportunities.Another way of determining whetheror not electrical equipment is operat-ing efficiently is to identify potentialpower quality issues. Poor power qual-ity is expensive. First and foremost, itpushes up your energy costs both fromexcess power usage, and in penaltiesyour utility may assess for poor powerfactor or high peak demands.

Poor power quality also takes a tollon equipment, increasing the cost ofmaintenance and repairs. Prematureequipment failures or damage caused

by power problems result not only inthe expense of replacing the equip-ment itself, but also in associatedlabor costs for diagnosis and repair.

When equipment is not operatingdue to unscheduled downtime, pro-ductivity drops and process consisten-cy suffers or fails, which in turn leadsto product waste. Fluke’s Power Qualitytools provide the means to discoverthe source and magnitude of powerquality issues allowing savings oppor-tunities to be identified and capital-ized upon. Taking these capabilities

one step further, the Fluke 430 Series

II Power Quality and Energy Analyz-ers will quantify the actual fiscal costof wasted energy due to poor powerquality, ultimately saving money interms of your energy bill and theeffects of unplanned downtime.

How do you know you havepower quality problems?

You’ll easily recognize the symptoms:flickering lights, power outages, nuisance tripping of breakers, PLCsand variable speed drives. Equipmentsuch as motors and transformers willrun hot or noisy. Some problems are

more subtle such as poor computerperformance, causing lock-ups anddata loss. All of these problemsdrive up your utility bills and drivedown efficiency.

Where do power qualityproblems originate?

You might not realize that more than80 percent of all power quality prob-lems originate within your facility.

Large equipment starting-up orshutting down, improper wiring andgrounding, and overloaded circuitsor harmonics are just a few of theculprits. Less than 20 percent of powerproblems originate with the utilitytransmission and distribution system.Lightning strikes, equipment failure, accidents, and weather conditionsall adversely affect the utility. Neigh-boring businesses, and normaloperation of utility equipment canalso affect the quality of power deliv-ered to your facility.

Take a pro-active approach You have the power to improve powerquality. Your frontline of defense isregular and frequent inspection of yourfacility with good maintenance prac-tices, using the right inspection equip-ment. That’s where Fluke can help.

A  Frontline troubleshootingand predictive maintenance

In these applications, a memberof the facility’s maintenance teamresponds to failures that may result indowntime.

When the facility is down it isnot generating revenue, so there isextreme urgency to get these prob-lems identified so operations can berestored as quickly as possible. Withequipment down, the maintenancetech wants to see information aboutthe problem right on the screen of

the tool—as opposed to recordingit and then analyzing the data laterwith a PC.

Symptoms include:• Overheating transformers• Overheating motors•  Reduced operating life of motors

and transformers•  Control system problems

(PLCs tripping)•  Nuisance tripping of circuit

breakers

B  Load studies

Before the installation of newequipment or major distributionchanges, load studies are conductedto determine if the system hasenough electrical capacity to handlethe proposed loads.

The three groups that mayconduct a load study include:•  Electrical contractors—who have

been hired to install newequipment.

•  The maintenance team—if theyare installing equipment.

•  The utility—when a new facility

is being built and there is aneed to determine what trans-

formers and other equipmentwill be needed to meet powerrequirements.

In the US, regulation NEC 220.87

defines how to properly perform a

load study in order to obtain an

electrical permit.

Recognizing, identifying, and solvingpower quality problems is increasinglyimportant to businesses—so buildingthis essential knowledge will helpyou get to the next level. You can counton Fluke to bring you the understandingand the proven tools you need.

Count on Fluke to help you find, fix, and prevent power qualityproblems

Industrial and commercial building applications

C  Energy surveysThe goal of an energy survey is toreduce the electrical energy usage.

Simple monitoring and targetingcan discover savings opportuni-ties by comparing daily and weeklyenergy usage profiles with facilitiesactivities. Monitoring and targetingcan also pinpoint reductions in peakdemand charges and power factorpenalties.

An energy survey is performed overwhatever period of time captures arepresentative energy profile of the

business in question. This could bea day, week, or month depending onindustry. The facility uses the resultsof the survey to guide improvementsin energy consumption, such asinstalling high efficiency equipmentor correcting power factor. The testwill then be repeated to validate thebenefit of the changes.

Fluke’s new UnifiedPower Measurement(UPM) capability can alsodiscover energy wastedue to specific power

quality issues such asharmonics and unbal-ance. UPM specificallydetails the energywasted due to thepresence of thesepower quality issues.By reducing harmonicsand unbalance you canreduce the overallamount of energy used.

D  Voltage qualityCustomers expect their utilities to supplyvoltage that meets a minimum level ofquality to allow their facilities to runwithout problems. When a customerexperiences a voltage quality issue, theyoften assume that the utility is at fault,so the customer or the utility will use atool to validate the voltage qualityat the service entrance. In Europea standard for voltage quality has beenestablished: EN 50160. Many countriesoutside of Europe accept this standardas well. If the utility is ruled out as thesource of the problem, the next step isto conduct voltage quality tests insidethe facility and at the load.

Symptoms of voltage qualityproblems include:• Flickering lights•  Tripping/resets• UPS cycling

E  Long-term and intermittentanalysisMany times, the problem cannot beidentified immediately. It could be theinteraction of different loads on the

power system causing the problem. Inthis case, an instrument that can recordvoltage and current information overtime helps the user more easily diag-nose the disturbance. These tests oftenuse a series of instruments, recordingat multiple locations simultaneously topinpoint the root cause of the distur-bance. Tests can last for months whilepersonnel wait for the symptom to occurso they can correlate it to the specificevent that caused the problem.

Symptoms include:• Intermittent voltage disturbances

• High speed transients
