Mr Ross Davis

By the time this goes to print, we will all be on first term

holidays having a two week break from the hustle and bustle

of school. Term 1 has been filled with learning, activities, challenges and projects, and we are delighted to see the

amazing participation of all our families in school life.

One of the highlights of Term 1 has been our fabulous Pink Cricket Night, organized by the staff, students and parents,

in conjunction with the Flowerdale Cricket Club. This was a

fund raising evening for the McGrath Foundation, and it was great to see such large attendance. With a cricket clinic,

sausage sizzle, competitions and friendly families, the eve-ning was a great success.

As our photos show, the pink theme was heavily embraced with Mr D, Ms Campbell and Mrs Alkemade going all out to

impress and out-do each other. Equally our kids and fami-lies presented a fantastic array of colour in every shade of

pink. Pictured from top: Tom, with School Captains Jay and Beata. Grade 6 student Emerald with Mr D, Em’s dad Dave

Autumn has arrived with brilliant blue skies and mist in the val-leys. We’ve had a wet summer, which means that CFA fire restrictions have now been lifted and burn offs on rural proper-ties are permitted. Have you started up the wood heater in your house yet? House fires are more common in winter when people are using fires, heaters and other electrical gadgets. Because of this, the CFA recommends that when you change your clocks for Daylight Saving on Sunday 1 April, change your smoke alarm battery too.

Burning off You can burn off material that has been piling up over summer, but remember:

Never leave a fire unattended. Stay with it until it is

all burnt, and douse the embers with water. If it’s cool to touch, you can leave it.

Logs and branches must be less than 75mm (about

3 inches) thick. Don’t burn huge logs.

No tree stumps, as these can continue to burn un-

derground.

No windrows (large piles of fuel). Keep your fires

small.

Turnouts. On 15 March, Flowerdale Brigade attended a car accident on the Yea–Whittlesea Road a few kilometres south of the Store. While nobody was seriously hurt, the car had flipped onto its roof as the driver tried to negotiate the wet road. This accident is a reminder to slow down especially when it’s raining.

Next training and meeting at the Fire Station. Training is on the first and third Sundays, and the brigade meeting is on the first Tuesday. Everyone is welcome to drop in to find out about Brigade activities. The Fire Station is at 2648 Yea–Whittlesea Road, phone 5780–2179.

Training—Sunday 1 and 15 April, 9 am. Meeting—Tuesday 3 April, 7.30 pm.

Bill’s on the job

Bill Gale, was recently appointed as Executive Officer of Community-led Recovery. His role is to engage with, work for, and advise on behalf of community post bushfire recovery, for the Flowerdale and Kinglake communities. His role will also encompass the communities of Strath Creek, Toolangi, Castella, and the Melba Group, but to a lesser degree. In his role Bill will be working with local groups to plan for the future. Issues of governance and structural aspects of community groups will be considered and recommendations made. In small communities with a number of groups it would make sense to look at the situation as a whole and come up with some way of continuing their work - but in the most efficient way . Establishing links, sharing resources, facilities and expertise, between similar groups in neighbouring communities is also a powerful way of creating sustainability. Investigating ways to finance the groups and ensure their future are also aspects to be considered. Bill will be meeting with individuals and groups. He is keen to hear from community members with ideas to help maintain a vibrant and sustainable community. If you are interested in contacting Bill with ideas or questions, contact the Community House for his email address. The position is funded by Peter Ryan, Deputy Premier and Minister for Bushfire Recovery, Regional

Development, Victoria and The Department of Planning and Community Development. The position is Auspiced by Flowerdale Community House.

IN OUR last report Flower-dale Cricket Club had just beaten undefeated top side Kilmore in round 12 on January 21 and was sitting in second position on the ladder. Unfortunately we lost the next two games to Puckapunyal and Pyalong. Both games were high scor-ing and close but we were not good enough on the day. We were able to easily win the following two games against lower sides Yea and Royals which left us third on the ladder with two games to go. Round 17 on Febru-ary 25 was again against Pyalong. They were fourth on the ladder with equal points as us but a much lower percentage. This was an important game to win as finishing fourth would leave us no chance at all for a home final. The game was tough but we managed to win, securing third place on the ladder and guaranteeing us a place in the finals. The final four finished up with Kilmore 1st, Broadford 2nd, Flowerdale 3rd and Pyalong 4th. First plays fourth and second plays third with the two winners playing off for the Grand Final on March 24. In the semi final against Broadford , Broadford went through to the grand final

against Kilmore which Kil-more won in a close game. All team members should be proud of their efforts this year, not only finishing third but the way we played throughout the year showed we can be a competitive team in the competition. All players, staff and sup-porters can also be proud of the way we portrayed Flowerdale to visitors and alike. Afternoon teas at our home games were as good as we have seen for many years and it was nice to be able to invite spectators to join us throughout the year. Our Presentation Night was a great night for all that at-tended with the following players winning awards. Club Champion- Jimmy Stephens Batting Award- Reece Emmins Bowling Award- Shane Lee Fielding Award- Ash Cook Nobody scored a century this year, however top scores over 50 were Reece Emmins - 95 and 55, Jimmy Stephens - 80, 78, 72 and 57, Luke Hannah – 74 no and 51 in the final, Chris Wilsher - 68, Ash Cook - 67 and Shane Lee – 51 no Best bowling figures went to Jake Carrick with 5 for 5

against Royals and 4 for 19 against Pyalong. Other good bowling figures were Chris Wilsher 4/20, Shane Lee 4/27. Highest batting partnerships were the opening partnership of 118 between Reece Em-mins (55) and Ash Cook (67) against Pyalong, and an unbroken 107 for the sixth wicket between Luke Hannah (74no) and Shane Lee (51no) against Kilmore with several other 50-plus partnerships spread amongst the top order. Some special awards were also presented on the night: Luke Hannah- Biggest six-landing one on the other side of the creek; Jimmy Stephens- Fastest 22 yard sprint-after a brown snake swam past the ball he was trying to retrieve from the creek; Jimmy Stephens-Nancy Boy Catch- You just had to be there to explain this one; Leo Mackrell- What the Hell Was That Award- for taking a one handed slips catch, with his eyes closed. Wally Moore-Over 50s Fielding Award- Took three catches and he’s still telling everyone about them. Special congratula-tions to Jimmy Stephens who won the Seymour Dis-trict Cricket Association bat-ting award presented at the SDCA presentation night on

March 24. Jimmy is the fourth Flowerdale player to win an association award since we joined the competi-tion in 2001 and the first to win the batting award. Bowl-ing awards have been won by Jason Jeffrey- 2001/02 and Joel Dunn 2003/04 and Association All Rounders Joel Dunn 2002/03, 2003/04, 2005/06 and Colin Crowe 2007/08. Club Champion Jimmy Stephens on the front foot against Pyalong

Match Reports Round 1 to 12 see Janu-ary Flyer. Round 13, Puckapunyal games are always good tough games and this one was no exception. Reece Emmins and Ash Cook got us off to our best start for the season putting on 118 for the first wicket before Emmins was caught for 55. Cook went on to make his first half century for the club with 67. Stephens (57) also batted well with the middle order and was last man out with the total on 206. As usual our opening bowlers (S Lee and L Hannah) were accurate and runs were hard to come by. A bowling change bought

Jimmy Stephens on who

looked comfortable at the crease and took the score to 1 for 90 in the 17

th over. Shane Lee came back on to bowl

and took 3 for 6 in two overs including 3 wickets in 4 balls. The momentum had swung our way but Pucka bat deep and the hard hitting Kouzan was still there. Ash Cook come on to bowl and took a wicket straight away as did Chris Emmins in the next over when he had Kouzan caught for a hard hitting 75. At 6 for 158 in the 28

th over we needed more wickets but

Puckapunyal were too good and made the runs with four overs to spare. Scores Flowerdale 6 for 204 def by Puckapunyal 7 for 206 Batting-Bowling-S Lee 3/43, A Cook 2/13, Round 14 saw Pyalong bat first and make a good total of 219. With opening batsman Reece Emmins unavailable, the score was going to be a big chase on the big but fast Pyalong ground. The two openers Ash Cook and Luke Hannah got us off to a good

tart with a 51-run stand and then Jimmy Stephens in-creased the run rate and when Hannah was out for a solid 40, we were 2 for 109 off 20 overs. Shane Lee was out with the total at 139 which bought Jack Crowe to the crease. The two took control of the match with some big hitting and in the 37th over we were 3 for 203 needing only another 19 runs off three overs. Unfortunately Stephens was run out for 80 then Crowe departed for 48, followed by two more quick wickets and we could only manage 212 leaving us 8 runs short. Scores Pyalong 6 for 219 def Flowerdale 6 for 212 Batting – J Stephens 80, J Crowe 48, L Hannah 40 Bowling- S Lee 3/23, C Emmins 2/31

Round 15 was against Royals at Bennet oval in Sey-mour. Winning the toss, we decided to bowl as the turf pitch was a bit on the green side. All bowlers bowled well and the lowly placed Royals were no match being all out for 86 with Jimmy Stephens capturing 2 wickets for 7 runs, Reece Emmins 2 for 13 and Ash Cook also 2 for 13. Our batsmen had no problems in chasing the runs down with only the loss of one wicket. Scores Royals 106 defeated by Flowerdale 1 for 97 Batting- A Cook 41no, J Stephens 21no Bowling- J Stephens 2 /7, A Cook 2/13 Round 16 against Yea was a similar story with Yea be-ing all out for 81. Once again our batsmen chased the runs down with only losing the one wicket. Jimmy Stephens was best of the bowlers taking 3 for 18 with Reece Emmins taking 2 for 3 from three overs of leg spin. Scores Flowerdale 1 for 83 defeated Yea 81 Batting- A Cook 36no, R Emmins 34 Bowling- J Stephens 3/18, R Emmins 2/3, L Hannah 2/20 Round 17 was the must win match against Pyalong. Batting first we were off to a bad start with both openers out early. Jimmy Stephens and Shane Lee took the score to 98 before Lee was out for a well made 35. Stephens was in an aggressive mood but was caught on the boundary for 80 with the score on 120 in only the 17th over.

Luke Hannah was out soon after and at 5 for 129 we were going to have to fight to give our bowlers some-thing to defend. Chris Emmins and Chris Wilsher consolidated with a 48-run partnership before Emmins was out, then Wilsher opened up and, with Bill Stubbings, added 58 runs in the next seven overs before he was out for a hard hitting 68. Stubbings (8no) and Jake Carrick (9) took the total up to 256 from the 40 overs. Pyalong were off to a good start with the openers putting on 47 before the first wicket fell. Wickets continued to fall though and after 31 overs the score was 5 for 138. Pyalong needed 119 runs from 9 overs- over 13 an over. Pyalong No 7 batsman, Cam Hoey, playing in his first game for the year obviously didn’t think that was a prob-lem; he came to the crease with nothing to lose and started smashing every ball that came his way and was virtually unstoppable. The partnership continued to 217 in only six overs until Andrew Butterworth took a good outfield catch off Shane Lee’s bowling to dismiss opener Paul Sterling for 47. Pyalong now needed 39 from 3 overs, which was a big ask, but with Hoey at the crease anything could happen. A change of bowler saw Luke Hannah come on and with Hoey attempting another six was bowled by a perfect inswinging yorker and the pressure was off. Hoey had made 78 from about 25 balls. The tail could-n’t manage the runs and Flowerdale ended up winning by 29 runs. Scores Flowerdale 9 for 256 def Pyalong 9 for 227 Batting- J Stephens 72, C Wilsher 68, S Lee 35 Bowling-L Hannah 3/18, S Lee 2/73,

Round 18 (March 3) Washout

The Semi Final saw Flowerdale win the toss and put Broadford In on a turf pitch which was going to do a bit. Jimmy Stephens picked up a wicket in his first over and Broadford struggled to 2 for 40 after 14 overs. A 67 run partnership enabled Broadford to get on top and then a couple of wickets fell quickly and Broadford were 4 for 161 in the 34th over. Some bowling changes saw Flow-erdale pick up the next 5 wickets for 8 runs and we were in a good position at the end of the forty overs. Unfortunately we lost Reece Emmins and Jimmy Stephens cheaply and were on the back foot straight away. Ash Cook (32) and Luke Hannah (51) worked hard for a 70 run partnership but after that wickets fell too fast and we were all out for 142. Scores Broadford 176 defeated Flowerdale 142 Batting- L Hannah 51, A Cook 32 Bowling-J Stephens 3/11, S Lee 3/17

Following rate-payers' objections to a proposed 8% rate rise last year, the shire undertook to investigate possible cuts which would limit the rate rise to 6%. Murrindindi Council has just com-pleted a series of consul-tation meetings through-out the shire outlining these proposed cuts to spending and services. Murrindindi mayor, John Walsh, told this reporter that he was happy with the outcome of the com-munity meetings. "Their aim was to inform the community, to gather feedback, and provide ratepayers with further opportunities for response." The Alexandra meeting had between 150 and 200 attendees. John Walsh said this was due to a single issue, which was the changes to li-brary services. Mr Walsh, said, "Although the meeting returned to this issue, he felt that the councillors got the mes-sage across about the reason for the cuts and, generally, people under-stood the issues. They may not like it, but they understood." About 12 people at-tended the Kinglake meeting, in contrast to Alexandra. John Walsh, said this was a good sign that, "People had read

through the information that was mailed out. They are well aware of the options regarding cost savings and accept the proposed 6% rate rise." Mayor Walsh, was on John Faine's 774 ABC radio show on 28th of March talking about the dire financial state the council finds itself in fol-lowing the 2009 bush-fires. The following day, John Faine interviewed the minister for local gov-ernment, Jeanette Pow-ell, concerning Murrind-indi Shire and the finan-cial problems it is facing. Although questioned sev-eral times, the minister would not say if any fur-ther assistance would be available to the council, above what has already

been granted. Mayor Walsh and other Murrindindi councillors visited the Flowerdale Community House as part of a tour of the facilities built in the shire since the bushfires.

It is the on-going costs of these facilities, their running costs and maintenance, which are putting a burden on the council.
