Fountain FlowWell-being drink for weight control and craving for sweet

Fountain Flow is a lightly carbonated well-being drink developed by Finnish nutrition experts. Fountain Flow is designed to help with weight management and curb the craving for sweet. Chromium and magnesium are important minerals for active people. They are also building bricks for super foods. However, a standard diet does not necessarily guarantee the sufficient intake of these minerals. Fountain Flow combines chromium and magnesium with premium Finnish spring water.

ARTEMIS multi-centre study 2007 –

• Finnish-Canadian study funded by TEKES (Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation) and six participating Finnish companies

• Flow Drinks is the only drinks manufacturer participating

“Based on their composition, Flow Drinks products are suitable for diabetics in connection with sports and exercise. The results we have had so far and which are still being analyzed support this assumption. In our research we have not come across any negative effects Flow Drinks products may have on diabetics or healthy people.

The ARTEMIS/EDGE study is a Finnish-Canadian study which aims at recognizing, forestalling and correcting cardiovascular problems associated with diabetes. Both healthy and diabetic people need replenishing liquid and energy while exercising. Consequently, the study has looked into Flow Drinks products’ suitability for this purpose.

This part of the study is being undertaken in the Foundation of Sports Medicine, Helsinki Unit, and the Helsinki University Sports Sciences Unit.”

Evaluation of the Effects of Sports Drinks: A Psychophysiological Approach 1/2

• A study evaluating the effects of sports drinks was performed byCKIR at HSE during the first half of 2009. The study tested the effects of Flow Endurance in GTR2, a sports car racing simulator, a challenging digital game. The effects of Flow were comparedwith a placebo consisting of the sugars of Flow, and water.

• The methods used were EEG (electroencephalography), ECG (electrocardiography), EMG (electromyography), EDA (electrodermal activity) and self-evaluation.

• The test subjects (n = 13) were healthy 20-29 year-old men, normal weight as measured by BMI. Each participant was givena gift certificate to a department store and 24 bottles of Flow. To motivate them further, the three best drivers were given an extragift certificate.

Page 26: Flow Drinks, product information

Evaluation of the Effects of SportsDrinks: A Psychophysiological Approach 2/2

• The test took three days, each day at about a week’s interval, at the same time of the day. The men were instructed to have no food or cafeine drinks three hours before the test, there was to be no smoking for 12 hours before the test and no alcohol during test days or the previous days. The testwas done in laboratory conditions.

• Conclusions: With Flow Endurance the lap times were faster, implying improved performance. Deviaton between laptimes was also smaller. Judged by self-evaluation, the menexperienced higher arousal, better ability to focus and a better emotional state on mind. There was also increase in the sympathetic activity of the heart thus supporting the mobilization of resources.

How do Flow drinks differ from other drinks?

• Flow drinks are a Finnish invention. They have been developed in cooperation with top physicians, athletes, professional athletes, trainers, coaches, universities, researchinstitutes, training centres and the Flow Institute, the Scientific Advisory Board of Flow Drinks Ltd.

• Flow drinks do not contain citric acid which is harmful for tooth enamel. • Flow drinks contain no added colours, flavours or artificial sweeteners• Flow drinks contain no added caffeine; the caffeine comes naturally from green tea and

guarana• Flow drinks contain super food ingredients such as local Nordic berries rich in

antioxidants, green tea, extract of French maritime pine bark, magnesiumcitrate which is easily absorbed, and L-Carnitine. These ingredients support you efforts in exercise and in coping with everyday life, keeping energy levels even.

• Flavonoids protect muscle cells and promote recovery. L-Carnitine is of great interest to athletes in that it has a beneficial effect on weight management: it increases the use of energy by utilizing fatty acids simultaneously decreasing the need for carbohydrates. Green tea increases the ability to concentrate, which is important even when not exercising, for instance during a long workday.

• The guarana in Flow drinks takes away the feeling of hunger and helps in burning fat. Italso increases perception and concentration. This plant has traditionally been used as a medicinal plant in South America because of its many healthy attributes.

• The taurine in Flow drinks is an important chemical compound monitoring the watermetabolism in cells and the functioning of cardiac muscles. It also funtions as a chemicalmessenger in the central nervous system.

• Inositol can be found in nuts, cereals and beans as well as in breast milk and in small amounts in cow’s milk. In the human body, inositolcan be found in abundance in the nerve tissue and kidneys. It is also important in cell membranes and in intercellular communication.

• Inositol has a positive effect on the ability to concentrate and it relieves stress.

Magnesium citrateTrimagnesium dicitrate

• Magnesium is an essential mineral for humans. It is good for the heart and a building block for teeth and bones. Consequently, over 50 % of the magnesium in humans is located in bones. Magnesium also has an important role in activating enzymes.

• Magnesium balances the mind in stressful situations. As trimagnesiumdicitrate is it water soluble, it absorbs well and balances sugar metabolism.

• Magnesium citrate maintains physical performance ability. In diabetics itprevents insulin shock and ”sugar blues”. Magnesium slows down the nervous impuls accelerated by calcium thus preventing muscular cramps.

• Magnesium has said to be useful in preventing kidney stones. • Symptoms of magnesium deficiency are weak muscles, disturbances in

muscular and nervous functions and arrhythmia of the heart. Magnesium deficiency is thought to be one cause to coronary heart disease. Magnesium deficiency may also make you more susceptible to cancer.

Taurine

• Taurine is a biologically important chemical compound which regulates the waterbalance in cells and the function of cardiac muscles. It also functions as a messengerin the central nervous system. Most of the body’s taurine can be found in musclesand the brain, also in the nervous system and sensory organs.

• During exercise taurine maintains vitality and has no side effects. Taurine alsoprotects your nerves from injury. By modifying the taurine molecule it is believedmedication for the prevention and treatment of epilepsy, cerebral edema and nervecell injury can be developed. Apparently taurine can also neutralize the harmful endproducts of infections. Taurine in known to accelerate the body’s fat metabolism and facilitate the absorption of fat soluble vitamins.

• An adult contains about 1 gramme of taurine per kilo of weight. Taurine is producedin the liver and brain. This is a slow process and strenous muscle exercise may slow itdown even more. This means that taurine intake from nutrition is important.

• For infants taurine is essential. That’s why breast milk and infant formulas containtaurine.
