Hello and welcome to our biggest Conservatory production to date; Newsies. By recreating social parallels of the past to that of today’s society Newsies celebrates unity, diversity, and above all things self-worth. Well over a hundred years ago hundreds of newsboys and newsgirls took to the streets with a message of unity and freedom; that despite their age or social class, they have just as much value and meaning as anyone else and that their voice must be heard. The

Broadway smash musical Newsies bring us the well-known and most celebrated lyrics; “Now is the time to seize the day.” As we’ve ventured through this mammoth of a musical over the past couple months I’ve realized that the operative words in those lyrics are not “sieze the day” but “now is the time”. If we can learn anything from the talented students of SW Florida and the themes of Newsies, it’s just that. “Now is the time”, and that yesterday is over and tomorrow may be too late.

Today we use this inspiring musical to give a platform to 51 SW Florida students as they bring their voices to the stage with a powerful message of change and solidarity. These students have spent the last two months creating this production with professional artists from all over the country and through song and dance were dedicated in bringing truth and artistic integrity to every moment. Their passion for unity and hard work throughout this process in bringing their voice and message of Newsies to their community has been an inspiring and exciting experience. One we hope will also resonate with you.Thank you for coming out to the theatre today for being a patron of arts education. As always I ask that you laugh, cry, think, and feel and that you don’t sit back and relax but sit on the edge of your seat and engage.

Now is the time.

SYNOPSISNew York City, 1899. Jack Kelly and his ragtag team of newsboys make a meager living selling newspapers on the city streets. But when the prices of “papes” are hiked and the newsies are hung out to dry, there is nothing left to do but “open the gates and seize the day!” Led by charismatic Jack and independent, young newspaper reporter Katherine Plummer, the Newsies form a union and organize a strike against the greedy publisher of the New York World. Can a group of idealistic newsboys win against a foe as powerful as acclaimed publisher Joseph Pulitzer? Inspired by the true story of the 1899 Newsboys Strike, Newsies is an ebullient, joyful, and entertaining musical capturing the strength that young people have when they join together and stand up against injustice. With a funny, poignant book by Harvey Feirstein and stunning music by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman – including the show-stopping Seize the Day, power ballad “Santa Fe” and lovely new songs like Katherine’s “Watch What Happens – Newsies is a classic with the power to inspire.
