Objectives

The objectives of this 12-month project are:

• identify environmentally safe waste materials; including recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and concrete rubble

• mix with common fill to improve strength and stiffness

• evaluate economic impacts and benefits to the state

• develop construction specifications

First Quarter Accomplishments

• Website prepared• Report posted on website and submitted April 1st to

FCSHWM

• Site Visit to Goodson Paving to collect concrete samples

• Survey prepared for RAP and Concrete Rubble producers

Samples Obtained

• RAP Samples from APAC Melbourne Plant– Good Material in Nonstructural Areas– Subject to Creep under Constant Stress– Mixes Show Improvement but not eliminated

• Concrete Rubble Samples from Goodson Paving Melbourne Plant– Visually a Coarse Granular Material– Several Stockpiles available

Critical Tasks:

1. Sampling Waste Materials

2. Survey Waste Material Generators

3. Begin Testing & Mixing Program

4. Initialize Specifications

Second Quarter Tasks

Page 8: Florida Institute of Technology Civil Engineering Department PI:Dr. Paul Cosentino

1. Sampling Waste Materials

• Material sources:– Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP)

– Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA), concrete rubble

• Improvements to Recycled Materials:– Add % of AASHTO A-3 clean sand

• Improvements to Marginal Soils by Adding RAP or RCA– Sand-clay base

– Muck

2. Survey Waste Generators• To: FDOT District Engineers, then

contractors and processing facilities• Objective: To estimate variability of:

1. Production Type2. Quantities3. Engineering Behavior4. Economics

• Survey Link: • http://my.fit.edu/~cosentin/rap_rca_survey.php\

• Discussion and Comments
