The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is constructing an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) project designed to alert motorists of an alternate route when a train is crossing their path on Florida Avenue in downtown Lakeland. The City of Lakeland Transportation Management Center will control and operate the system once it is in place.

The new system will activate at the same time as the crossing’s warning devices when a train is approaching Florida Avenue between Main Street and Pine Street. Once activated, 14 blank-out signs will light up along Florida Avenue with messages notifying motorists of delays ahead and guiding them to the alternate route.

Northbound drivers on SR 37/Florida Avenue will be guided west onto Lime Street, north beneath the railroad overpass on Sikes Boulevard, then east onto George Jenkins Boulevard back to US 98/Florida Avenue. Southbound motorists on US 98/Florida Avenue will be guided west onto George Jenkins Boulevard, south beneath the railroad overpass on Sikes Boulevard, then east onto Lime Street back to SR 37/Florida Avenue.
