As of December 24, 2015, pharmacists must complete two extra hours of training regarding prescription pain medication.

Officials claim this is the first step to aid pharmacists working with patients who require pain medication.

Additionally, pharmacists now have access to a database that ensures that the patient is seeking to obtain the drug legally, and hasn’t already obtained the prescription at other pharmacy locations.

Pharmacists are now encouraged to call the prescribing doctor directly as well, to ensure that the medication is legally prescribed to the patient.

This rule change in pharmacists’ training is primarily in response to a state and nationwide epidemic of abuse of prescription medication - particularly when it comes to pain medication. Although this will by no means eradicate the problem, this is another measure in helping pharmacists cope with this issue.
