Giving back was a focus of the HCASC program year and the HBCU service projects supported a wide range of charitable causes. In all, 70 schools completed projects across dozens of communities.

Fayetteville State University earned the top prize for their submission; Livingstone College and a combined entry from Oakwood University and Alabama A&M University received $1,000 grants for their charities.

The 2011 Hall of Fame inductees spotlight achievement from the early days of the program. Both inductees continued their HCASC legacy by volunteering over the course of the weekend.

Mark Branch played HCASC for Morgan State University during the first two seasons of HCASC, 1989 through 1991. After graduating with honors and dual degrees in Physics and Engineering Physics, he began a lifelong career at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center.

Mark has supported high profile NASA missions such as the Space Shuttle and the internationally acclaimed Hubble Space Telescope. Today, he is responsible for three world-class test facilities and oversees a group of engineers and

technicians who conduct space flight testing.

Blake Dye served as Team Captain at Winston-Salem State University in 1991 and 1992. Working with an arm of the Children’s Defense Fund, Dye developed a mentoring program involving graduate, undergraduate and secondary students in the community. He later explored his passion for education by serving under-represented student populations.

Blake also served the Federal government at the Department of Justice and the Department of Transportation before moving on to other opportunities in public service. His experiences have made him a sought-after panelist and presenter on diversity topics.

With six championship titles, Dr. Vivian L. Hobbs has the best coaching record in HCASC. But the trophies are only a small part of what makes her worthy of the inaugural Coach of the Year Award.

Over the decades, Hobbs has hosted training sessions for HCASC headquarters, coaching seminars, Pre-NCT tournaments and presided over countless hours of practices with the FAMU HCASC club.

Since the beginning, she has been the benchmark for coaching excellence and an iconic symbol of the program. Even in retirement, Dr. Hobbs is sure to offer advice to Chuck in coaching “her children.” Congratulations to Dr. Hobbs on being the inaugural HCASC Coach of the Year.

Darnell Butler Woods was named the 2011 Ernest C. Jones Sportsperson of the Year. He has played HCASC for three different institutions during his college career.

A veteran of Elizabeth City, Cheyney and Virginia State, the committee recognized Darnell’s boundless respect for other players, personal grace as a winner and loser, and his ready smile and positive attitude.

In his final year as an HCASC player, it is fitting that a person noted for cheering on his competitors is recognized with this honor. Kudos!

Fans of the King of Pop waggled their wiimotes in time to his biggest hits in the Michael Jackson Experience game. Players and even Honda Associates got in on the action as the irresistable hits had them “Workin’ Day and Night.”

Eventually, Kentucky State’s Kendra Joseph out-Jacksoned her three competitors in a “Thriller” performance that brought down the house. The top four players received gift cards as well as trademark sequined gloves and fedoras.
