GENERAL FLORICULTURE RULES
1. Entries are due no later Thursday, May 16th, (unless otherwise stated). Online entry is available for exhibitors on the fair’s website www.stancofair.com.
2. Exhibitor will be charged a $4.00 processing fee for entries submitted on a paper entry form. 3. Entry must be authorized by the PARENT or GUARDIAN. The exhibitor’s age must also be
included on the form in order to be considered complete.
4. Each entry must be listed separately and specifically. Entries in "any other" classes must be
clearly specified.
5. Entries must be brought in as stated for receiving. Exhibitor names are displayed at fair.
Husband and wife are considered one exhibitor.
6. Cut specimen classes in the Floriculture Department must have been grown by the exhibitor
within the county, district or community represented by the exhibitor, except divisions for
arrangements. The exhibitor must have owned plants for at least 60 days.
7. All exhibitors must be out of the floriculture area by 9:30 a.m. each day. Please arrive
early to allow enough time before 9:30 a.m. to process your exhibitor cards/exhibits. Unless otherwise stated, buildings are closed during the judging of exhibits.
8. Exhibitors must maintain their exhibits as often as necessary on the basis they were judged.
Gardens with running water or motorized movement must be maintained for the duration of fair and kept in working condition. Premium money may be withheld if any exhibit is not
maintained and kept in proper condition. The day after fair all gardens must be leveled to a
smooth terrain.
9. Only persons licensed to sell nursery stock may sell plant materials in displays.
10. All materials and decorations used for displays in the building must be made from flameproof
materials or treated and maintained in a flame-retardant condition. Dyed flowers may be used.
Minimum amount of painted materials allowed. Exhibitors may use fences, screens, dividers,
concrete walls, pools, fountains, art, sculpture, wood mosaics, metal forms, mobiles etc. Height
& type of structure are subject to management approval.
11. Judges are instructed to make no award where none is merited, as per State Rules.
12. All State & Local rules apply. All General Rules at the front of this handbook apply.
13. Plants must be in clean containers, groomed and insect free. Exhibitors are encouraged to
correctly label all plants with either the botanical or common name, or both. Specimen plants
must be well rooted in the container. 14. Flower arranging is the art of organizing design elements (space, line form, size, color, texture,
and pattern) according to the principles of design balance, proportion in regard to line, size,
contrast and rhythm to attain beauty, harmony, distinction and expression.
15. Use class title as a springboard for imaginative creativity, not as a literal interpretation.
16. Professional: One who engages in a specific event or activity for monetary profit.
EXHIBITORS are responsible for entering the correct division accordingly.
17. Accessories are permitted to help depict a theme. All entries are displayed at the discretion of
the management.
18. Exhibitors desiring special background must bring support for it which should be self-
standing with back covered if displayed.
19. Fresh flowers and/or fresh plant material should be used in all arrangements unless stated
otherwise. A limited amount of dry material is also permitted. Some dyed and painted
materials are allowed in the Artistic Divisions when stated.
20. Arrangements must be essentially completed at home. Prep space available for last minute details only.
21. Foliage and accessories are permitted in arrangements unless otherwise noted. Succulents
may be classified as foliage.
22. Mark your containers. The management will not be responsible for loss or breakage.
23. Containers are provided for cut flowers, except floated specimens and miniatures.
24. Flowers in this department should have their own foliage as it grows on the stem.
25. Large dahlias should be disbudded. Foliage should remain on the dahlias. Small dahlias
need not be disbudded.
26. Hybrid tea roses should be disbudded.

GARDEN RULES
1. Garden entries must be submitted in person at the Exhibits Office. 2. Garden entries will be accepted until Thursday, May 30th or until garden plots have been
filled. Entry fee is $10.00 per garden plot.
3. Limit: 1 GARDEN per Exhibitor, Chapter, Club or Group. Husband and wife are
considered one exhibitor. Exhibitors interested in entering more than one garden plot
must request additional plot at the time of entry. Exhibitors will be called after May 30th if
a second plot is available. Second garden plots will be issued on a first come first served basis.
4. Garden landscape plot plans are required for all garden entries and must be submitted prior to judging. The Garden Landscape plot plan is included in the judging of all gardens. Plot
plans should include names of plants, flowers etc. 5. All State & Local rules apply. All General Rules at the front of this handbook apply. 6. Sod orders must be in by Wednesday, July 3rd by 12 noon, fees may apply. Maximum
sod orders are 50 sq. ft. for 10x10 plots and 100 sq. ft. for 10x20 plots. Delivery will be
Tuesday, July 9th.

as stated, exhibitors forfeit their garden space.
12. All gardens must be completed by 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 10th, except for hand
accessories. Exhibitors are required to sign an approval form, authorized by the Floriculture Superintendent, upon completion of the exhibit.

13. Gardens will be judged on Thursday, July 11th at 9:30 am. Exhibitor names and award
placings will be displayed after judging. Garden release, including all clean-up, is on Monday, July 22nd from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm.
14. Judges are instructed to make no award where none is merited as per State Rules for fairs.
15. All work and preparation for gardens must be done by the exhibitor(s) only,
including Junior, 4-H and FFA. The only exception for gardens in Grades K-2 & 3-5
would be any heavy lifting, digging, or hanging items. No FFA Advisor, 4-H Leader or
Adult can participate in the construction of a Junior, 4-H or FFA Exhibitor’s Garden. All Garden exhibits will be observed for progress and completion prior to judging, and this
rule will be enforced by the Floriculture Superintendent.
16. Violation of Rule #15 will include:
a. Warning – Signature of Exhibitor and Floriculture Superintendent required.
b. Disqualification of entry as authorized by the Floriculture Superintendent, signature is required by the Exhibitor and the Superintendent.
17. Gardens must remain for the duration of the fair. Plots are approximately 10'x10' or
10’x20’; check with the floriculture department for exact sizes of garden plots.

4-H & FFA Ornamental Horticulture Rules 1. Entries are due no later Thursday, May 16th, (unless otherwise stated).
2. Visit the fair’s website www.stancofair.com to enter your exhibits online or download an
entry form. An Exhibitor will be charged a $4.00 processing fee for entries submitted on a paper entry form.
3. Entries must have been grown by the exhibitor as part of their supervised 4-H or FFA
projects. 4. Participation at the fair is limited to the following rules:
a) Exhibitors must reside in the 38th Agricultural District, composed of Stanislaus
County and that portion of Merced County north of the Merced River served by the
Turlock Irrigation District.
b) San Joaquin County 4-H Groups or FFA Chapters may be eligible to enter in the 4-H
or FFA Ornamental Horticulture Department divisions only if the requirement of 50% or more of the total Exhibitors in Chapter reside within Stanislaus County.
c) Verification of residence within Stanislaus County is subject to review each year to
qualify for participation at the Stanislaus County Fair.
d) All 4-H & FFA Ornamental Horticulture Exhibitors desiring to show at the
Stanislaus County Fair may not show at the Chowchilla Fair, Los Banos Fair, Merced County Fairs, or the San Joaquin Ag Fest, within the same calendar year.
5. The specific variety must be adequately and correctly labeled with both Genus and
Species.
6. Entries must be under the ownership of exhibitor for at least 60 days prior to the opening
day of fair.
7. All plants must be in suitable, standard nursery containers. Exhibitors are responsible for care & maintenance.
8. All plants with the exception of cactus/succulents will be watered daily.
9. Exhibits which have insects, weeds, not correctly labeled, damaged pots, incorrect plant
or pot for division, or in wrong division could lead to a “No Mark” placing.

STANISLAUS COUNTY FAIR 4-H/FFA OUTSTANDING EXHIBITOR
The Outstanding Exhibitor Award is a competition open to any 4-H or FFA member in good
standing with their club or chapter. Members will be judged on their participation at the
Stanislaus County Fair including market show, breeding/exhibition show, showmanship as
well as the condition of their animals, exhibit and knowledge of their project.
Outstanding Exhibitors must enter online by Thursday, May 16th, 2019
No late entries will be accepted
Market and Breeding Outstanding Exhibitors will be judged separately
but only one overall winner will be awarded
