    Passiflora foetida must be frequent at low elevations in every province ofPanama. The species, although unmistakable, is extremely variable in small details,and Killip recognizedno less than 42 named varieties. All of the specimensenumerated bove he referred o var. isthmiaKillip.

    The ovary of C. cucurbitifolia,with its slender tyle,recalls that of C. stylosaHeilborn of Peru, the leaf segmentation f which, however, correspondsmoreclosely with that of C. papaya. It is unfortunate hat staminateflowers re notknown. In the herbarium f the MissouriBotanical Garden s a staminate pecimenof papayo collected by Skutch (no. 4797) in Costa Rica which appearsto be re-lated to C. cucurbitifolia, lthough with a differentlyivided eaf more similar noutline to that of the succeeding species. The Skutch plant has white corollasabout 4 cm. long and ovate calyx lobes about 1 mm. long. It definitelys notC. papaya as presently etermined.3.
