Conservation Status in NSW: Vulnerable
Description
Dark brown to reddish brown fur on the back and is slightly paler below.
They weigh up to 10 grams.
Distribution, habitat and ecology
East coast from south Queensland to southern NSW. Solitary and occuring in dry sclerophyll forest and woodland east of the Great Dividing Range.
Threats
Loss of hollow-bearing trees and foraging habitat and application of pesticides in or adjacent to foraging areas.
Conservation Status in NSW: Vulnerable
Description
Primarily slate-grey, with the males easily identified by their scarlet head and wispy crest, while females have a grey head and crest and feathers edged with salmon pink on the underbelly.
Distribution, habitat and ecology
Southern Victoria through south- and central-eastern New South Wales, from the south-east coast to the Hunter region, and inland to the Central Tablelands and south-west slopes favouring old growth attributes for nesting and roosting
Threats
Psittacine cirovirus disease (PCD) which is spread through contaminated nest chambers, clearing of vegetation and degradation of habitat and roosting habitat.
Conservation Status in NSW: Endangered
National Conservation Status: Endangered
Description
A tall bushy shrub that grows to 6 m with small white flowers growing in dense many-flowered clusters.
Distribution, habitat and ecology
Restricted to the Illawarra region, where it is recorded from a number of sites, primarily occupying the coastal lowlands between Oak Flats and Toolijooa, which is a range of approximately 22 kilometres.
The typical habitat is dry ridge tops and rocky outcrops on shallow volcanic soils. Associated vegetation includes Bracelet Honey-myrtle, Melaleuca armillaris scrub, Forest Red Gum, Eucalyptus tereticornis woodland and rainforest margins.
Much of the natural habitat for the species has been removed and many sites now occupy road verges and paddock edges.
Threats
Further loss, damage and fragmentation of habitat, particularly through clearing for agriculture, quarrying, road construction and residential development.
Conservation Status in NSW: Vulnerable
Description
A heron, dark grey to black in colour with a characteristic yellow streak on the sides of the head and down the neck.
The female is paler than the male, with a more yellow wash on the underparts.
It has a characteristic booming call, mainly heard during the breeding season.
Distribution, habitat and ecology
Wide distribution, from southern NSW north to Cape York and along the north coast to the Kimberley region inhabiting both terrestrial and estuarine wetlands feeding on frogs, reptiles, fish and invertebrates, including snails, dragonflies, shrimps and crayfish, with most feeding done at dusk and at night.
The bird is generally solitary.
Threats
Clearing of riparian vegetation, predation by foxes and feral cats on eggs and juveniles, grazing and trampling of riparian vegetation by stock.
Conservation Status in NSW: Vulnerable
Description
Chocolate to reddish-brown fur on its back and slightly lighter coloured fur on its belly.
It weighs up to 20 grams, has a head and body length of about 6 cm and a wingspan of 30 - 35 cm.
Distribution, habitat and ecology
East and north-west coasts of Australia. Caves are the primary roosting habitat, but the bats also use derelict mines, storm-water tunnels, buildings and other man-made structures.
Threats
Damage to or disturbance of roosting caves, loss of foraging habitat and predation by feral cats and foxes.
Conservation Status in NSW: Vulnerable
Description
Relatively large with a length of about 65 mm. It weighs up to 28 grams. It is dark to reddish-brown above and paler grey on its underside.
Distribution, habitat and ecology
South-east coast and ranges of Australia, from southern Queensland to Victoria and Tasmania preferring moist habitats, with trees taller than 20 m and generally roosts in eucalypt hollows.
Threats
Disturbance to winter roosting and breeding sites, loss of trees for foraging and hollow-bearing trees for roosting.
Conservation Status in NSW: Vulnerable
National Conservation Status: Endangered
Description
Dusky brown to black cockatoo with a massive, bulbous bill and a broad, red band through the tail.
The red in the tail is barred black and edged with yellow.
The female usually has irregular pale-yellow markings on the head and neck and yellow flecks on the underparts and underwing.
Distribution, habitat and ecology
Uncommon although widespread throughout suitable forest and woodland habitats, from the central Queensland coast to East Gippsland in Victoria, and inland to the southern tablelands and central western plains of NSW feeding almost exclusively on the seeds of several species of she-oak (Casuarina and Allocasuarina species).
Threats
Habitat reduction through, loss of tree hollows and illegal bird smuggling and egg theft.
Conservation Status in NSW: Vulnerable
Description
Large powerful bat up to 95 mm long.
It is dark reddish-brown to mid-brown above and slightly paler below.
Distribution, habitat and ecology
Widespread in NSW on the New England Tablelands utilising a variety of habitats from woodland through to moist and dry eucalypt forest and rainforest.
Threats
Disturbance to roosting and summer breeding sites, foraging habitats are being cleared for residential and agricultural developments, including clearing by residents within rural subdivisions.
Conservation Status in NSW: Vulnerable
National Conservation Status: Vulnerable
Description
The largest Australian bat, with a head and body length of 23 - 29 cm.
It has dark grey fur on the body, lighter grey fur on the head and a russet collar encircling the neck.
Distribution, habitat and ecology
Found within 200 km of the eastern coast of Australia, from Queensland to Victoria occuring in subtropical and temperate rainforests, tall sclerophyll forests and woodlands, heaths and swamps as well as urban gardens and cultivated fruit crops.
Threats
Loss of foraging and roosting habitat, unregulated shooting and electrocution on powerlines.
Conservation Status in NSW: Vulnerable
National Conservation Status: Vulnerable
Description
Small to medium-sized bat with long, prominent ears and glossy black fur.
Distribution, habitat and ecology
Generally rare with a very patchy distribution in NSW, with scattered records from the New England Tablelands and North West Slopes.
Threats
Clearing and isolation of forest and woodland habitat for agriculture or development.
Conservation Status in NSW: Vulnerable
Description
Dark-grey to reddish brown fur above and paler fur below with disproportionally large feet.
It weighs up to 15 grams and has a wingspan of about 28 cm.
Distribution, habitat and ecology
Coastal band from the north-west of Australia, across the top-end and south to western Victoria.
It is rarely found more than 100 km inland, except along major rivers.
Threats
Reduction in stream water quality affecting food resources and clearing of foraging and roosting areas.
Conservation Status in NSW: Vulnerable
Description
Reddish, medium-sized, long-winged raptor, about the size of a Little Eagle or harrier.
Adults have a white face with thick black streaks on the crown and finer streaks elsewhere.
A key character in flight is the long fingered, upswept wings with a large white patch at the base of the barred ‘fingers’.
Distribution, habitat and ecology
Coastal and subcoastal areas from south-western to northern Australia, Queensland, NSW and Victoria in dry woodlands and open forests and timbered watercourses.
Threats
Clearing of habitats and disturbance to or removal of potential nest trees near watercourses.
Conservation Status in NSW: Vulnerable
Description
Very distinctive, large, insectivorous bat up to 87 mm long with a glossy, jet-black back, and a white to yellow belly.
Distribution, habitat and ecology
Found across northern and eastern Australia.
In the most southerly part of its range - most of Victoria, south-western NSW and adjacent South Australia - it is a rare visitor in late summer and autumn.
Threats
Disturbance to roosting and foraging habitats for residential and agricultural developments, loss of hollow-bearing trees and clearing and fragmentation of forest and woodland habitat.
