! Three prominent Jewish Tulsans, Joe Borg, Charles Goodall, and Louis Kahan had a dream to have a Jewish Day School in Tulsa. In 1975, that dream came true with opening of Heritage Academy. The school used classrooms at Bnai Emunah synagogue for many years until it was relocated to the Charles Schusterman Community Center.
! After several years, new rooms were added when the Sherman Miller Museum was built. Older classrooms in the original hall were taken for office space for the Tulsa Jewish Federation. Remaining space was used to create the library and the computer lab.
! Other generous families donated money to create funds within the Foundation to keep the school on a positive financial footing. As a result, interest from these funds are given to the school each year for the annual budget.
! The name change to Flo and Morris Mizel Jewish Community Day School came about when sons, Larry and Steve Mizel created an Endowment Fund to give one million dollars to Mizel School over a period of ten years.

Building Electric Circuits
!
! Math and Science were brought together in the 4th and 5th grade classroom as the students built electrical circuits which lit up light bulbs if the correct multiplication fact matched up with the correct answer. (See photo above)
We receive interest from the principle each year for our annual budget. This is our seventh year to grow this fund.!
All of these funds allow us to offer scholarships and purchase materials and equipment for our classrooms to maintain a standard of academic excellence in both Judaic and General studies. Current named funds include:
! We urge you to contribute to these funds or create a Legacy for a loved one in your family.

! We are so pleased to have these students and their parents as part of the Mizel family. How wonderful for our returning students to have new friends this year!
!
! Third grade students now know that sunflowers are heliotropic while they are growing, but once the flower sets, they stop following the sun. The flower heads become very heavy when the seeds start to form and they look sad and droopy. This facilitates the dropping and spreading of their seeds. ! The class took a walk over to the Jewish Federation Community Garden and identified many of the plants by their leaves, flowers and fruit. The students were amazed at what is growing in the garden and how much a single plant (or seed) can produce!! Students examined parts of plants that are safe to eat and noticed other parts that are not. They also learned how some plants are purposely grouped together to help with pollination and pests.
! The Jewish New Year is a time for reflection, forgiveness, and setting personal goals for the following year. Prayers written by Jewish scholars and poets recall the hardships of exile, persecution, and martyrdom. ! We ask forgiveness for our sins and pray for mankind during the ten days of repentance between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The “shofar” or ram’s horn is blown to stir those who have shirked their duties and remind us of God’s dominion over all people. ! “Tashlich” also takes place during this ten day period. Bits of bread are thrown into the Arkansas River to symbolize the casting away of our sins and broken promises. ! Mizel students and staff invite parents, grandparents, and special friends to join them at the 31st Riverside bridge amphitheater. This annual Mizel event begins at 9:00 am on Thursday, September 12 and lasts 30-45 minutes.! According to the Jewish lunar calendar Sukkot, Simchat Torah and Shemini Atzeret also fall during the month of September. With school closed on several Thursdays and Fridays and celebrating Tashlich, we will not have Kabbalat Shabbat services during the month of September. We will resume celebrating Kabbalat Shabbat on Friday, October 4 in the Sylvan auditorium.

! Did you ever think about inventions that have occurred just in your own lifetime? Morah Pitcock’s fourth and fifth grade students used this perspective in their study of Inventors and Inventions.! They each created a timeline depicting inventions from their own lifetime. During their rotations (independent study time), they searched through a large selection of biographies to gather quick facts about these recent inventions and inventors. ! When Morah Pitcock brought in a large wooden box, the class had to guess what was inside. Several students had their first encounter with an “old-fashioned” record player. They were fascinated by the sound produced by a needle on vinyl. We discussed the differences between records and digital forms of music. We all agreed that the sound created by the record player was more clear and crisp!

Luigi, a Bearded Dragon lizard, has a home in Morah Lazalier’s Gan/Alef classroom. Students marvel at how friendly he is, especially when he crawls up the teacher’s shirt. Imagine how exciting for a child to have this exotic pet in the classroom! Stories and artwork are sure to evolve as her students observe his daily behavior.
! Mark your calendars for Temple Israel’s Shalomfest to be held Sunday, October 6, 2013 from 12:00 to 5:00 pm. This annual event features Jewish rituals, fantastic food (corned beef sandwiches, matzo ball soup, knishes, challah, etc.). Tours of Temple Israel are offered. Jewish holiday items, books, and designer craft items/paintings may be purchased. Kid-friendly activities include (face painting, making craft items and Jupiter Jumping. Music is performed by local artists for your listening pleasure under the tent. And, our own Mizel students will be performing. The time of their performance will be announced closer to the event. It is a Sunday afternoon to be remembered. You won’t want to miss it!

! If you answered yes to any of these questions, review your family's schedule. A few changes can make a big difference. Reduce TV viewing, for example, by planning to see only certain shows. Eliminate extracurricular activities that are not enjoyed. Eat one meal a day together. Read something aloud at the table, and then discuss it. Encourage your child to read on a Kindle or an iPad. Set a regular bedtime - 15 minutes built in for reading. Chances are excellent that you can fit in reading ... and relax while doing it!
Does reading every day feel impossible for yourfamily? You may be over-scheduled. Here's a questionnaire to help you find out. Answer yes or no to these questions:
! Does your child watch more than 10 hours of TV or play electronic games per week? (Hint: If you're not sure, keep a TV and or video diary. You might be surprised with the results!)
• Does your child watch TV shows or play electronic games at random - mostly when he's bored?
• Does your child do extracurricular activities almost every day?
• Does your family's schedule keep you from spending much time together?
• Does your child spend all of his free time on activities, chores, or homework?
• Does your child complain about being too tired?

! “Responsibility”or “Achrayut” is our Jewish value for September. The students have been discussing how being responsible is following the rules, being accountable for one’s behavior and helping others in need.! Our “No Excuse Moose” Bulletin Board displays students’ thoughts on how they can change their action from an excuse to a responsible alternative.
