Thatmaynotseemlikeabigdealtothoseofyouwholiveinhouseswithmoreroomsthanyoucancount,butcitydwellerslikemeobsessovertheuseofeveryprecioussquarefoot.

FromtheminuteIcrosseditsthreshold,Iknewourdiningroomwouldhostmuchmorethantheoccasionaldinnerpartyandholidaymeal.Itisoneofthemosttraffickedroomsinourhome.It’swheremykidsspreadouttheirartprojects,wheremyhusbandandIsortmailandpaybills,andwhereaMonopolymarathoncanextendintotheweehours.

ThediningroomisalsotheunexpectedplacewhereIperchandpaceduringimportantphoneconversations.Ididn’tplanforit.Itjustsohappenedthatthewallunderthediningroomwindowbecamethelast-resorthomeforanantiqueSwedishsetteethathadbeenshufflingaroundthehouse.Thebenchnownotonlyhidesanuglyradiator,butalsoprovidesawarm,sun-drenchedspotformetochatonthephone.Andittaughtmeanimportantlesson:Decoratingisn’tpermanent.Gowiththeflow.Someofthemostbrilliantdecoratingmomentshappenbyaccident.
