Locust trees, and Sericea Lespedeza. Our goal being to keep the West Ranch clear of these invasive species and manageable on the Main Ranch.

Flint Oak added another forty acres adjacent to our property, west of the office. We planted the new property with five varieties of native grass this past spring. These added acres will be utilized as an additional hunting zone in three years or less.

Next on the agenda was Flint Oak replacing the chip and seal road from the low water bridge to Hunt Village sometime in August. An expensive project but will make for a smoother transition for our members from start to finish.

Flint Oak is looking forward to doing what it does best; hunting, shooting, and enjoying a great new hunt season menu from Chef Vincent. See you soon!

grooming Flint Oak continue to keep our crew busy. The monsoon rains in May have helped to provide great cover on the ranch for our upland birds, turkey, and deer.

The preserve planting crew went back to the “ Buck and Cock” milo that has given great results in past years. The mini rain showers received throughout the summer has really helped milo growth. The guys continue to wage war against the Johnson grass,

Summer's here and we’re ready for cool weather and hunt season to start. Our yearly burning went very smooth due to Mr. Oakes “ the pyro” lighting the way. I managed to burn the ranch last year along with a few other properties not belonging to Flint Oak. That didn’t occur this year as Jeff made sure the burning was completed before he took his annual Florida vacation. Spraying, maintaining roads, planting milo, and

The 2014-2015 duck season was again a major success! As word spreads about the fast-paced wing shooting action the reservations pile in almost quicker than our greenheads do!

This style of Hunt is perfect for either smaller groups or large corporate groups who want to fit in a shoot before their morning field hunt or European shoot. We more than doubled our amount of duck hunters from the 2013-2014 season and are anticipating another great season to come in 2015-2016. We have improved the cover around the blinds to ensure complete concealment from the ducks.

Never been on a Flint Oak duck hunt? Try it out! Your guide will pick you up at the lodge bright and early, once you have arrived at your blind your guide will get you set up and settled in with a hot cup of coffee and a delicious breakfast burrito to enjoy

while you wait for the action to begin. As first light rolls over the lake, sounds of whistling wing and quacking mallards flying over-head will for sure get your heart racing, but don't spill your coffee just yet! Our professional guides will talk those greenheads right down in your face providing you with the ideal shot on those fast flying mallards. With wings cupped and feet down they will come right into the decoy spread. Once your guide throws the lids of the blind down its up to you to let the lead fly!

Reservations are already flooding in for the duck hunts so make sure you get those in before we get booked up! So give us a call so you can make those mallards fall!!

Brent and I are looking forward to the 2015 deer hunting season. Some of Flint Oak’s available archery dates have already been filled for the season. Out of the ten plus shooter bucks we had on trail cams last year, only one was harvested, a thirteen point that was featured in a previous update article. Trail cam pictures will begin to show up on Flint Oak’s website in the coming weeks. Flint Oak has added several new gravity feeders and have more on the way. Also more summer food plots were added this season, and protein has been fed.

Flint Oak will offer a three day and two night hunting package that includes lodging, guide service to and from the

stand, and field dressing your harvest. Flint Oak has a local meat locker that can process your deer if so desired. Due to managing the herd more effectively than in past years, we are asking that no deer under 140 inches be harvested. Once again, Flint Oak will only be taking a limited number of hunters so please make your reservation early to insure your spot.

Starting out the season for firearms is the Youth and Disability classification, running September 5, 2015 thru September 13, 2015. Deer Season for regular firearms runs from December 2, 2015 to December 13, 2015, with the extended season for firearm Whitetail Antlerless only beginning January 1,

2016 and ends on January 10, 2016. Archery is a great experience in deer hunting and the season will start on September 14, 2015 and continues until December 31, 2015.

In addition to the regular hunting packages available, Flint Oak will run two specials. These will only be available to Kansas residents. The first one is for youths age fifteen and under and for doe hunting only. At any time during the deer rifle season they can book and hunt for doe only for $100 per day. All youths must be accompanied by an adult and must purchase their own tags. A Flint Oak guide will take the hunter and his accompanying adult to their assigned deer stand, drop them off and then pick them up.

Need to fill your tag, or hunting just for doe? Then the second special is for you, and will run during the extended season January 1, 2016 thru January 10, 2016. Once again you must purchase your own tag, and this is available only to Kansas residents. The cost is $100.00 for two days hunting (Lodging NOT included) and is for doe harvesting only. A Flint Oak guide will deliver you and pick you up from your assigned deer stand.

I believe this will be one of our best seasons yet, with an exciting time awaiting those who have deer hunting blood running through their veins.

superb dog work and memories that will last forever.

Flint Oak continues the super fun Super Quail Hunt for the 2015-2016 hunt season. Many great comments were heard from our guests returning from the field. Where else can you find twelve to fourteen coveys of quail in a few hours of hunting? A covey of quail exploding up your pants leg certainly ups the fun factor. More and more of our guests enjoy using .410’s and other small gauge varieties to harvest multiple flying targets, this is a great way to hone your shooting skills. Furthermore, many members and their guests enjoy watching Flint Oak’s dogs work as much or more than the harvest itself.

Remember, Flint Oak can only accommodate a limited number of Super Quail hunts per day, so make your reservations early to enjoy

plan on installing aerators in the near future. This process increases oxygen levels for our fish during the dog days of summer.

Indian Creek, Lodge Lake, and Center Lake continue to be fun fishing for our members. You can throw a line in from the bank, or Flint Oak has a limited supply of two person boats for Center Lake that you can rent upon request.

We feel that late September and October will be the best fishing of the year on Indian and West Lake due to cooler temperatures. All of our lakes are catch and release with the exception of Crappie, which our members will need to have a current Kansas fishing license if you plan on keeping this species.

A very wet spring with over twenty inches of rain in May made for slow fishing compared to the 2014 season on Indian Lake. Twice this year the Preserve department shocked Indian Lake to remove smaller fish. This process allows the bigger fish additional baitfish and faster growth. Consider a hunt/fish combo when cooler temperatures arrive in October.

Anglers continue to enjoy success catching fish worthy of a photograph on West Lake. Seven to nine pound Wipers are the average weight of fish caught with Largemouth Bass weighing in between the three to six pound range. West Lake enjoys crystal clear water regardless of amount of rain fallen

and continues to be the best unguided fishing value for our members. We

Gun shots, bird dogs and good honest stories. That is right! It’s time to get back into the fields. Summer is coming to an end and everyone at Flint Oak is ready to hunt.

Some Members have experienced the pleasures of a Flint Oak Field Hunt, but for those who are new, just ask a friend that has. The trip will be a life changing experience, bucket list material. The thrill of wing shooting has been sought after for years and here at Flint Oak, we enjoy keeping the wing shooting tradition alive and well.

July floods have the entire Ranch thriving with lush green grass that will provide cover on top of cover throughout

the season. Milo development is quite pleasing with nice thick crops this year, all of this will provide excellent cover for wildlife. We’ll be singing Guns & Roses marching through the field (Welcome to the Jungle).

Many Members ask “Super Quail or Traditional Hunt?” It is a toss up. Growing up in east Texas I really enjoy chasing bobwhite quail. It just reminds me of tromping around with Grandpa and his “champion” pointing dogs. But the cackle of a big rooster can really get a hunter fired up. Flint Oak is able to offer many different types of hunting with our quail infested west Ranch looking over long rolling prairie hills as well as

rugged hills and hardwoods, packed with devious stealthy pheasants.

I don’t know about those good honest stories, but they are all good over Snickers and coffee. Come on out folks and take pleasure in another great hunting season.

The driven pheasant shoot, reserved for Europe’s royalty and aristocracy until the mid-20th Century, has a long and rich history. The shoot begins with the Horns men. The hunting horns blow notifying the shooters to begin and the “beaters”, traditionally servants walking through the woods driving the game ahead of them, start pushing the birds towards the shooters. When the birds approach the clearing at the edge of the forest they flush high and fly very, very fast towards the waiting guns providing “missile” like targets. Traditionally, midway through the hunt, servants brought their masters food and drink and a feast at the castle followed the hunt. Flint Oak’s European shoots, in the tradition of those reserved for the kings so long ago, begins with the hunting horns. Flint Oak’s rich and diverse background provides a truly exciting pheasant shooting for both the novice and the experienced gun. As the hunters’ horns sound across the landscape, prepare for the most exhilarating pheasant shoot of your life. True to tradition, food and drink are provided halfway through the hunt, a welcome respite to the shooting. The hunters’ lunch served at the lodge, rounds out the day. Start planning today for a truly exciting pheasant shooting in Flint Oak’s magnificent surroundings. Feel like a king; come to Flint Oak where you are royalty. Flint

Oak not only offers a variety of Private European Hunt choices, Flint Oak’s “Open European Shoot”, our “Grand Event”, is held virtually throughout the Hunt Season (see schedule page 22). The pageantry of this event, the mix of participants, the weather and a myriad of other factors, make each and every shoot unique.

The Open European Held on Saturday mornings, this is

the “granddaddy” of our Europeans. It includes a wonderful buffet breakfast, a coffee break around a toasty campfire, a hearty lunch and an equal share of the day’s harvest. The European has 39 blinds that surround the hill. Driven to flight, the pheasants fly towards the shooters. Flint Oak’s retrievers pick up the harvested pheasants even as you shoot. As each brace completes, you move to a new blind that offers new and different shooting challenges, then the fun starts all over. Shooting the European with a special friend or family member makes memories to last a lifetime. The Open European, scheduled regularly throughout hunt season, is an “open” shoot; you can book reservations from one to seventy-eight shooters! At the Open Europeans, we serve a variety of buffet lunches to finish off your fantastic European style driven shoot.

The Mini-EuropeanThe Mini, the first private European

shoot introduced at Flint Oak, has proven to be very exciting and even sportier than we first anticipated. A twelve blind shoot, it accommodates up to twenty-four shooters. The birds are on the shooters QUICK on the west side (blinds 7 through 12), the “forest side”. The shooters need to help each other by yelling information to one another. The birds darting through tree openings verify the importance of staying alert at all times. Instinctive “snap shooting” ability is a real plus. Most of the bag comes from pass shots behind the blinds. Blinds 1 and 6 transition from the forest to the prairie side (blinds 2 through 5). Circling and turning birds provide some long lead shots with the birds in full view and really moving fast! The birds reach such speed that very few birds harvested end up in front of the blind on the prairie side.

The Osage The Osage, Flint Oak’s newest

private European, and 6th European site debuted October 16, 2012. Located on the northwest corner of Flint Oak, it lays on a beautiful piece of acreage, with one side heavily populated with trees and overlooking a pond to the west. We named this European after the Osage Indian tribe that camped on Indian Creek, located to the north. The Osage features ten blinds which allows a group of up to twenty to experience this great thrill.

The PhoenixThe Phoenix was a mythical bird that

arose from the smoke and ashes of its own destruction ! Thus, we thought it was an appropriate name for this driven shoot because those birds just seem to keep rising and flying despite smoking shotguns ! The Phoenix, located on the westerly portion of Flint Oak, accommodates eighteen to thirty- six shooters. More trees and completely different terrain than any of our other Europeans make for a unique shooting experience.

Advantages of the European Hunt

European shoots are a great way to introduce your friends or business clients to Flint Oak. They are designed for Private groups of all sizes. This type of shoot is ideal for those not able to Field Hunt. When you factor in the unpredictability of Kansas weather, even the most experienced shooter will be challenged, while the novice will have an enjoyable experience hunting with friends. The camaraderie and atmosphere of these shoots is a great tool for team building. With all this in mind, why not schedule your European Shoot soon? To increase the fun and add more shooting pleasure, extra birds may be purchased for each of these shoots except the Open European.

The Scottie / Double ScottieIdeal for six to eight shooters, the

Scottie lies toward the east and allows smaller groups to enjoy European style shooting. -Or, the “Double Scottie” differs in the fact that the shooters rotate around the circle twice, giving more shooting opportunity and a second chance at mastering the nuances of each shooting position. A coffee break after the completion of the first rotation enables the shooters to cuss and discuss the blinds and formulate new strategies prior to the second round. The second round’s harvest percentages are usually much higher. This shoot is ideal for those small groups of friends or clients that you wish to entertain on a more personal basis.

The MeccaWebster defines the Mecca as “a

center of activity sought as a goal by people sharing a common interest”. We at Flint Oak certainly hope that is true with our Mecca. Nestled in the upper end of a long brushy draw, sitting among some very large oaks and blackjacks with cedars and oaks in the center, this shoot produces some extremely challenging shots. It also sets astride a creek forking into a bigger creek. The area is a very pretty site. As you move around this shoot from timber to clearings, the variety of shooting opportunities will amaze you. This shoot, unlike some Europeans, is very versatile enabling groups of eight to sixteen shooters to use the shoot. With up to sixteen guns, extra birds will be a blast.

This past summer at Flint Oak was busy with lots of folks busting clay targets. To kick off spring we again hosted our annual Spring Sporting Clays League. We were blessed with a record number of twelve, three person teams who shot weekly over the six weeks. Even bigger news we

Summer Shooting Events

The last Saturday in March every year we hold a 1500 pheasant European to help raise some money for a great cause. This event has been sold out months in advance over the last three to four years, even with us adding additional shoots the same morning and again on Sunday.

A portion of each shooter’s fees goes towards supporting annual scholarships in a great program at Kansas State University that was started when a handful of professionals in the hunting industry held a meeting in 2006 at Flint Oak. After this meeting, and a lot of hard work by some dedicated folks at KSU, the new four year Bachelor of Science in Wildlife and Outdoor Enterprise Management program with a minor in business was developed.

This program is preparing students to be the next generation of leaders in the vast Outdoor Industry. During the student’s four years, one semester is devoted to being an intern somewhere in the world in t he ou tdoo rs . Students have done internships as close as Flint Oak, three hours from Kansas State University, and as far away as Argentina.

Th is year ’ s 1500 pheasant European will take place on Saturday March, 28th 2016 and if you want to be part of it I strongly suggest that you call today and make your

reservation for some hard flying birds and great fun while helping out the next generation of Outdoor managers.

A very Special event where you have the opportunity to have a fantastic time, meet some terrific Hero’s and come away a changed individual.

Last October, Flint Oak was honored to host one of the most special events that we have had in our 37 years of being in business. Kansas Salutes the Troops is one of the Special events that changes you for…. the better!

We have all seen the pictures and heard the stories of Servicemen and Servicewomen coming home from war with permanent disabilities they have received while defending our so many Special Freedoms. This event is a rare opportunity to have real experience firsthand with these American Heroes in a casual atmosphere where new friends are made.

Last Fall’s three-day event was part of ORHF's mission to raise funds to support Outdoor Sports Programs and to organize outdoor events for America's injured and wounded veterans that help them heal from their wounds, while they rediscover their abilities, build confidence and support networks.

Participants included veterans from recent conflicts, who now face daily life with loss of vision, prosthetic limbs, IED/shrapnel and bullet wounds, as well as Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). They embraced the shooting

venues with enthusiasm, enjoying the outdoor setting, the wonderful facilities at Flint Oak and the chance for some friendly competition.

The Outdoor Recreation Heritage Fund (ORHF) exists to provide healing experiences to veterans, troops, and their families through hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities. We want to ensure that outdoor sports and recreation opportunit ies abound for the brave men and women who have served our country. We’re hunters. We’re anglers. We’re archers and trappers. Their motto is: Be a Hero: Help a Hero.

Proceeds from various events like this held across the country go to help our Veterans in many ways. It also allows them the opportunity to try new outdoor based events across the country.

Sponsors provided quality outdoor and safety equipment, as well as an assortment of welcome gifts given to all the vets. Participants started their weekend off on Friday evening with a meet and greet in the Lodge followed by a Dog demo and fantastic wild game dinner. Our Hero’s and Guest awoke early on Saturday morning to more food (eating and shooting at all times

while at Flint Oak), and then ½ of them were off to the Safety Talk before the European kicked off at 9:00 am, while the other half headed for the Sporting Clays course. Out of the seventy in attendance, only a small handful of them had ever experienced the hard fast flying pheasants on a European at Flint Oak. After a hearty lunch, the groups switched activities in the afternoon with the Sporting Clays shooters heading to try their luck at the European and the AM European shooters heading to clays. At 4:30 all gathered back in the Lodge to tell stories of their day spent in the field. A live auction was held after dinner to help raise even more funds to support the Outdoor Recreational Heritage Fund mission. Sunday morning had things wrapping up for all with many hugs and contacts being exchanged before all left to travel home with smiles, sore shoulders and new friends.

If you would like to participate or donate to this World Class outing scheduled to take place on October 16-17, 2015, please contact Matthew Cook at 800-545-6200 or contact Linda Grimes, this coming year’s Master coordinator at: 540-349-5080. I promise you that it will be a life altering weekend at Flint Oak and that you will go home a changed person with a great feeling of American Patriotism in your heart.

Flint Oak also hosted several weddings, birthday parties and reunions. The summer wound down with the annual Tindle Construction Company picnic and Crossland Constructions retreats.

The Summer Season of 2015 turned out to definitely be a wet one, with over 13 inches of rain since April 1st with still a month and half of summer to go! One will hear no complaints, as rain in August and September is a huge asset as we look towards hunting season! This summer was one of our busiest yet and all of the patronage was greatly appreciated.

The summer kicked off with our Annual Spring Sporting Clay League which included 10 teams and a twist with this year’s weekly courses being held off of our normal sporting clay course. This was a refreshing change for those who have participated in our leagues for several years and fun was had by all. Thank you to our shooters and we look forward to having you with us this fall, league starts September 3rd.

In June the 2015 Texas 4-H Shooting Sports team, shotgun division, and their coach s topped a t Flint Oak for a couple of days practice before competing at the 2015 4-H Shooting Sports National Championships held this year at Grand Island Nebraska. Another enjoyable outing was the Miata Club who chose Flint Oak as their destination for a great weekend of fun and relaxation.

As we welcome V incen t Re i f back as our Accommodations Manager, one will see many i m p r o v e m e n t s throughout the M a i n L o d g e including enticing new dishes and room improvements. Summer in Review

The 33rd Annual Hunter Safety Course held at Flint Oak on August 8 & 9, 2015 was once again a huge success, with 39 participants ranging in age from 11 all the way up to 71!! Goes to show, that no one is ever to “old” to learn something new! This course is a great bonding experience between adult and child and very informational to those who are no longer in their younger years. The new teaching style mix of classroom and actual “hands on” experience has greatly improved the student retention of the material. After completing 10 hours of credits and passing the course exam, each graduate receives a free box of shells, courtesy of Flint Oak, to practice what they have learned on Flint Oak’s 5-Star Sporting Clay Course. This annual weekend is also a great time to experience everything Flint Oak has to offer, including guided and non-guided

fishing, shooting on Flint Oak’s 5-Star S p o r t i n g C l a y Course, fine dining and swimming. There is no fee for taking the course and it is a great experience for all ages. A BIG THANK YOU goes out to Roger Wells, Aaron Scheve, Dustin Lantow, Brian Pearson, Kim Jones, Dale Perry, Phil Taunton and the Flint Oak Staff for the donation of their time and another GREAT learning experience!! Don’t forget to mark your calendars for our 34th Annual Hunter Safety Course to be held August 13 and 14, 2016 at Flint Oak.

Make sure to sign up early, as course size is limited.

At each Major European and private European, a Flint Oak photographer will be at the “Coffee Break” to take a group picture. Hunting with a Gator to assist our Members and their guests continues to gain in popularity. Flint Oak’s Gators provide enough room to comfortably accommodate our guide, three hunters, guns and gear. Using a Gator provides our Members and guests the opportunity to enjoy three hours of field hunting without stressing the back and knees. Wind shields have been installed to cut the brisk Kansas cold and wind.

A Flint Oak guide will drive your Gator until our dogs go on point. With the dogs locked up, you will have plenty of time to load that shotgun and walk a few yards to start the action. This a great way to hunt in our rough, rocky, and beautiful Flint Hills.

Regardless of whether you are hunting or just observing the hunt, a Gator is an excellent way to make your experience at Flint Oak better. Be sure to reserve a Gator on your next outing so you can hunt in comfort and style.

KANSAS SPORTING CLAY CHAMPIONSHIP

Flint Oak was chosen once again to host the State Championship and did so on July 9-12th, 2015. Competitors from over eleven states gave it their best over the four days of activities to see who would be the Kansas Top Gun. Events that took place were the Kansas Main Event, Preliminary Event, Oakley Cup, K-State Cup, Lois Lessing Cup, Small gauge which included 20/28/4.10, Pump, Side by Side and Super Sport. Derrick Mein from Kansas came out on top in six of the events. Derrick is one of the top shooters in the World, who back in February brought home the Top Gun award and $200,000.00 in a million dollar tournament held in Dubai.

The four days wasn’t all about shooting clay targets, Friday and Saturday evening under the big tent

Flint Oak held a steak fry and a BBQ dinner for all to enjoy along with live entertainment and fantastic door prize drawings. Next June, Flint Oak will host the 2016 Kansas FITASC and 5-Stand Championships, so plan now on attending and get to the clays course and start practicing!

In order to be successful you must perform successfully. As the hunt season approaches we must prepare the mature dogs, c r e a t e n e w generations for the upcoming seasons, and last but not least retain the great reputat ion of the prev ious years. Every little step preparing the dogs for both the Flint Oak guide and the Flint Oak Member is very important.

These past few months the trainers have been working extremely hard to make sure the dogs are at their top level of learning and are becoming hunt ing dogs that match up to the expectations of the Members and their guests. Whether a dog catches on in just a few days, or it

well worth the effort to get to that end. It is very important that the dog is not too excited during the hunt, but that the dog is enthusiastic, that is one of the areas that the Flint Oak trainers are striving for right now.

When it comes to the next generation of dogs, we breed our best dogs together, even if that means we must travel six or seven hours to find the perfect male to make the perfect litter. On Wednesday August 5th Immy, an English setter, gave birth to a litter of four. In just a few short months the training of these beautiful pups will begin to create the newest hunting addition to the Flint Oak hunting season of 2016-2017.

As guides, to prepare for the upcoming season, all must learn the expertise of the dogs in order to make the hunts a success for the Members and their guests.

All of the steps are being taken by the guides of Flint Oak to make your experience the best you have ever had. We are looking forward to the 2015-2016 hunt season.

Flint Oak’s Summer BBQHeld the last weekend of June was

the first Flint Oak Summer BBQ, and we could not have asked for a better time. The event brought in guests from all over the countryside and adjoining states. With unlimited shooting in the afternoon, swimming, music by the pool with bank fishing at Lakeside Lodge and Center Lake, we had a great turn out all around.

With the slow smoked suckling pig taking center stage, beef brisket and smoked chicken quarters adding to the array, the food was excellent. However, the ice cream social afterwards was a great treat enjoyed by all and was as much a success as the rest of the meal. The weather was perfect and everybody had a great time with live music from local artist Clint Gilbert. The evening was finished off with a great

fireworks display that lit up the night sky over the Lakeside Lodge. This is sure to become the Flint Oak family tradition, getting bigger and better every year.

Hunt season is almost here and the new fall menu is sure to be the best so far, with some returning favorites and new dishes that are sure to become favorites. We have put together a great new wine list for 2015-2016 and will also be introducing a reserve wine list this hunt season.

Flint Oak has recently purchased a new cell phone booster, this will insure coverage over a larger area and

Today we are blessed to still have many of the Charter Members and their families still involved, some enjoying their 3rd and 4th generations in the Field.

HUNT SEASONRESERVATIONS AND CANCELLATIONSAll activities at Flint Oak require AD- VANCE RESERVATIONS. We limit the reservations we accept to the person- nel and facilities we have available. Un- like the airlines, WE DO NOT OVERBOOK! If we accept your reser- vation, we guarantee that we will have everything required for your activities (just like buying a ticket to a ball-game). We are located “deep in the country” and do not have passerby business. Our food orders and personnel sched- ules are made weekly and must be based on advance reservations.

Once your reservation is booked, we incur the expense of whatever advance ordering and planning are required. So if you fail to come, or cancel after the expense of preparations has been in- curred, what is fair? Should all guests be penalized by increased charges to cover these expenses? Most of our guests believe it is fairer to charge a cancellation fee to those who create the increased cost!
