Introduction Flight Control System (FCS)

Aircraft flight control systems consist of flight control surfaces, the respective cockpit controls, connecting linkages, and the necessary operating mechanisms to control an aircraft's direction in flight

These control devices are hinged or movable surfaces through which the attitude of an aircraft is controlled during takeoff, flight, and landing.

Abu Dhabi, 09 August 20163

Learning Objective : You will be able to identify the Aircraft Control Maneuver Process You will be able to identify primary FCS of The Aircraft

AKADEMI TEKNIK DAN KESELAMATAN PENERBANGANCIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AND ENGINEERING ACADEMYwww.atkpmedan.ac.idATKP-MEDANThe directional control of a fixed-wing aircraft takes place around the lateral, longitudinal, and vertical axes by means of flight control surfaces designed to create movement about these axes.

These control devices are hinged or movable surfaces through which the attitude of an aircraft is controlled during takeoff, flight, and landing.

Aircraft flight control systems consist of flight control surfaces, the respective cockpit controls, connecting linkages, and the necessary operating mechanisms to control an aircraft's direction in flight

They can be divided into three main groups:- Primary flight control- Secondary flight control- Auxilliary flight control

Elevator Control SystemControlled Aircraft Pitching

Abu Dhabi, 09 August 20169

AKADEMI TEKNIK DAN KESELAMATAN PENERBANGANCIVIL AVIATION SAFETY AND ENGINEERING ACADEMYwww.atkpmedan.ac.idATKP-MEDANElevatorWhen the pilot pulls the stick backward, the elevators go up, pushing the stick forward causes the elevators to go downRaised elevators push down on the tail and cause the nose to pitch upAn elevator is mounted on the back edge of the horizontal stabilizer on each side of the fin in the tail. They move up and down together. This makes the wings fly at a higher angle of attack which generates more lift and more drag

Cars go only left or right, but planes must be steered up or down as well. A plane has parts on its wings and tail called control surfaces to help it. These can be demonstrated by use of folded paper gliders and balsa gliders. Lets start with an experiment to illustrate how a plane is controlled. The stick (joy stick) is connected by means of wires or hydraulics to the tail sections elevators. By moving the stick, the pilot can change the position of the elevators. When the control column is pushed in, the elevators move down, pitching the tail of the airplane up an the nose down, rolling the airplane down. When pulling the control column back makes the elevators move up, pitching the tail of the airplane down and the nose up, rolling the airplane upwards.

Centering the stick returns the ailerons to neutral maintaining the bank angle.

Ailerons are mounted on the trailing edge of each wing near the wingtips, and move in opposite directions. When the pilot moves the stick left, or turns the wheel counter-clockwise, the left aileron goes up and the right aileron goes down. A raised aileron reduces lift on that wing and a lowered one increases lift, so moving the stick left causes the left wing to drop and the right wing to rise. This causes the plane to bank left and begin to turn to the left. Centering the stick returns the ailerons to neutral maintaining the bank angle. The plane will continue to turn until opposite aileron motion returns the bank angle to zero to fly straight.
