Across a 24-day, 24-cycle pressure vsthermal cycle test at 3020C (6080F)replicating industry application conditions, the Change gasket lost just 0.1 bar. Total.Never coming close to the failure point. It outperformed every other gasket testedby at least 9 cycles. And theres no tellinghow long it would have kept going if wehadnt stopped the test.

Thermiculite isinnovative, versatile andcomplete gasket material, making it the industrysleading sealing solution.
THERMICULITE
Innovative. Cutting-edge material technologyEver since inventing the spiral woundgasket in 1912, Flexitallic has been at theforefront of fluid sealing innovation. In 1998, Flexitallic set new standards for sealing technology with the introductionof Thermiculite Critical Service Seriesgasket material available in Tanged Sheet and later in Spiral Wound Filler and
Flexpro (kammprofile) Facing styles.
Exclusive to Flexitallic, this revolutionarymaterial, which comprises of chemically andthermally exfoliated Vermiculite*, simulatedthe structure of exfoliated graphite, withone notable exception it maintainsintegrity through a wide range of extremetemperatures.
All Thermiculite Critical Service Seriesproducts are designed and engineered forhigh temperature processes in services upto 1832oF / 1000oC.
*Vermiculite, a naturally occurring mineralwith a plate-like structure, demonstratingan exceptional broad range of chemical andtemperature resistance.

THE INDUSTRYSLEADING SEALINGSOLUTION
Total freedom from oxidationConventional graphite gaskets aresusceptible to attack by oxidising agents. This occurs from oxygen flowing throughpipes, or simply from oxygen present in theatmosphere surrounding the flange. The rate at which graphite oxidises depends on the application temperature and theconcentration of oxygen present. But when itdoes happen the end result is seal failure.
The unique composition of Thermiculitegasket material ensures that sealsmaintain their integrity at maximumservice temperatures far exceeding thatof graphite.
There really is no comparison. When it comes to worry-free sealing, chooseThermiculite and eliminate the risk of oxidation altogether.

Driven by the industrysneed for safe, effectivesealing solutions forincreasingly demandingapplications, Flexitallicinvented the spiral woundgasket in 1912.
SPIRAL WOUNDGASKETS
First and ForemostThe concept of spiral wound gasketconstruction was originated by Flexitallicin 1912, starting a new era in safe, effective sealing. The primary purpose for this development was the increasinglysevere temperatures and pressures usedby U.S. refinery operators in the first halfof the century.
The necessity for a gasket to have theability to recover cannot be overemphasised. The effects of pressure and temperature fluctuations, thetemperature differential across the flangeface, together with bolt stress relaxationand creep, demand a gasket withadequate flexibility and recovery tomaintain a seal even under these varying service conditions. The Flexitallic Spiral Wound Gasket is the precisionengineered solution to such problems, meeting the most exacting conditions of both temperature and pressure inflanged joints and similar assemblies and against virtually every knowncorrosive and toxic media.

NOTES: *It is essential that Style R gaskets are fitted with a compression stop. Without a correctly dimensioned stop the gasket can easily be over-compressed resulting in failure. To provide a compression stop the depth of the tongue, groove or recess should be controlled to provide optimum compressed gasket thickness with metal to metal contact on theflange faces.** See note at bottom of page 14 for inner ring requirementsFigures stated are for information only. Please refer to the current version of the original standards for dimensional information.
RecommendedGasket StyleFor general duties
RecommendedGasket StyleFor high pressure/temperature duty, also for gaskets withPTFE filler, corrosive or fluctuating pressureor temperature serviceconditions.
Style CG - Utilises an external ring which accurately centersgasket on flange face, providesadditional radial strength toprevent gasket blow-out and actsas a compression stop. A generalpurpose gasket suitable for usewith flat face and raised faceflanges up to and inclusive of class 2500.
Style CGI - A Style CG gasketfitted with internal ring whichgives an additional compressionlimiting stop and provides heatand corrosion barrier protectinggasket windings and preventingflange erosion. Suitable for usewith flat face and raised faceflanges.
Style R - Basic constructiontype. Inner and outer diametersare reinforced with several pliesof metal without filler to givegreater stability and bettercompression and sealingcharacteristics. Suitable fortongue and groove or male andfemale or grooved to flat faceflange assemblies.
Style RIR - Solid inner metal ringacts as a compression stop andfills the annular space betweenflange bore and the insidediameter of the gasket. Designedto prevent accumulation of solids, reduce turbulent flow of processfluids and minimise erosion atflange faces. Suitable for maleand female pipe flanges.

Style LS & LSI Low Stress Rangeof Spiral WoundGaskets.
The LS gasket offers the same high integrity sealassociated with the spiral wound gasket however, the LS and LSI has been designed in such a waythat compression and sealing requirements areachieved under very low seating stresses. Thesegaskets are intended for use on class 150 and 300applications, where customers traditionally do notuse Spiral Wound Gaskets due to concerns aboutexceeding allowable design stresses.
The traditional spiral wound gasket has its steelwindings protruding above the compression stop;this requires a significant loading stress to compressthe gasket to its optimum operating thickness.
The LS and LSI gaskets have only soft Flexicarbor PTFE filler protruding above metal windings andguide ring; therefore as the gasket is compressed, the Flexicarb or PTFE filler is readily compressedthus producing the sealing mechanism at an earlierstage as compared to the conventionallymanufactured spiral wound gasket.
The LSI gasket retains more of its initialstress or tightness, even when subjected to high temperatures, unlike PTFE sheet gaskets.
Available in a variety of metals, engineered to suit specific applications.

Thermiculite 835 HeatTreated Inconel X-750Spiral Wound Gasket.
Increased safety.Proven results. Proven cost savings.
Severe cyclic conditions? For the most demanding cyclic conditions, thechoice is Flexitallics Thermiculite 835 SpiralWound Gasket with Heat Treated InconelX-750 winding.
Differential thermal expansion and contraction of components in a bolted joint, due to the effectsof cyclic conditions, requires that extra resiliencybe built into the joint or the gasket to compensatefor fluctuating load conditions.
Normal gasket materials do not provide sufficientresiliency, and therefore cannot compensate forthe adverse effects of cyclic conditions. SpecialHeat Treated Inconel X-750 gasket materials havebeen developed by Flexitallic to ensure that jointintegrity is maintained during thermal cycles.
In OEM and End User testing comparing theperformance of standard 316L SS windings vs. Heat Treated Inconel X-750 windings(precipitation hardened), HT Inconel X-750winding material significantly increased the yieldstrength resulting in increased springback beforeleakage, or usable recovery.
Specify Flexitallics proprietary precipitationhardened Inconel X-750 windings inapplications where there are concerns about: Cyclic conditions Differential thermal expansion

The FLEXPRO gasket has been providingan extremely tight, reliable seal in a widerange of applications throughout Europesince its development in Germany over 85 years ago.
The FLEXPRO gasket is comprised of aconcentrically serrated solid metal core with a soft, conformable sealing materialbonded to each face. The soft facingmaterial provides low stress gasket seating, while the serrated geometry of the metalcore enhances sealing performance byinducing stress concentrations on thesealing surfaces. The serrations minimiselateral movement of the facing material, while the metal core provides rigidity andblowout resistance.
The FLEXPRO gasket exhibits excellentcompressibility and recovery characteristics, maintaining joint tightness under pressureand temperature fluctuations, temperaturedifferential across the flange face, flangerotation, bolt stress relaxation, and creep.Suitable from vacuum to extremely highpressure applications.
STYLE PN
Style PN FLEXPRO gaskets areselected for use in confined locations, including male and female, tongue andgroove, and recessed flangearrangements.
STYLE ZG
Variation of the PN FLEXPRO, utilisesan integral outer locating ring for correctgasket positioning within the matingflange bolt circle. Style ZG FLEXPROgaskets are recommended for use onstandard raised face and flat face flangeassemblies.
STYLE ZA
The Style ZA FLEXPRO is a slightvariation of the Style ZG. The integralouter locating ring is replaced by a loosefitting independent ring which ispreferred where flange differential radialthermal expansion may be encountered. These rings may also be spot welded.

TABLE 1: PVRC CONSTANTS

TABLE 2: ASME CONSTANTS
Independent PVRCtesting confirmssuperior tightness, room temperaturetightness (ROTT),behaviourcharacterisation.
Performance in ROTT testsThe results of two ROTT tests conducted atTTRL1 on Flexitallic FLEXPRO gaskets areshown in Figure 1.
At the highest Part A stress level (S5 - 15160psi), Tp values above 55000 were obtained. A tp of 55000 corresponds to a Helium leakrate of approximately 1 x 10-6 mg/s for an 800 psig pressure.
Part B test data indicates that this gasketmaintains superior tightness during stresscycling.
Gaskets constantsThe calculated gasket constants are reportedin the table below, along with computedvalues of S100, S1000 and the maximum Tp value obtained in the ROTT tests.
The ROTT behavior characterization of a gasket consists of:
Performing a minimum of two ROTT tests on NPS 4 samples
Treating and reporting ROTT data on thebasis of the Tightness Parameter Concept
Calculating the PVRC Gasket constants, Gb, a and Gs, according to the proposedASTM Standard
Reporting the gasket constants andcharacteristics
ROTT test procedureThe ROTT test includes a gasket load sequence (5 stress levels, S1 to S5), called Part A, whichrepresents the initial joint tightening and gasketseating. The maximum stress level (S5) is 15160 psifor metallic gaskets. Part A is interrupted at its threehighest stress levels to run unload-reload sequences, called Parts B1, B2, B3 which simulate joint relaxationand re-tightening. At each stress level, Helium leakageis measured (for two pressures in Part A and onepressure in Part B).
ROTT test data are plotted in the form of GasketStress, Sg, vs. Tightness Parameter, Tp, on a log-logscale. The tightness parameter, Tp, is a measure of the ability of an installed gasket to control its leakageperformance in a pressurised flange joint. Tp isproportional to the pressure causing a small leak and inversely proportional to the square of the leak. The higher Tp, the tighter the joint. A joint that is 10 times tighter than another leaks 100 times less(at the same pressure).
Gasket constants Gb, a, and GsThe PVRC tightness based gasket constants aredetermined from the results of two or more ROTTtests. Together constants Gb and a together definean initial seating performance line. The combinedeffect of Gb, and a is best represented by the valueof STP = Gb x Tpa calculated for typical values of Tpsuch as 100 or 1000. For example S100 = Gb (100)a.Constant Gs independently represents operation. Lowvalues of Gb, a, Gs, S100 and S1000 are favorable.

Cycling ComparisonDuring operation, unloading of a bolted-gasketed joint can occur due topressurisation, fluctuation in pressure andtemperature, thermal effects, joint relaxation, etc. PVRC test data confirms the superiorability of the FLEXPRO gasket to maintaintightness under these cyclic loadingconditions. As shown in the graph, whengasket stress is reduced from 8000 psi to4400 psi, the FLEXPRO gasket leaks 100times less than a comparable corrugatedmetal graphite gasket. A tighter joint isa safer joint!
T3 TightnessThe PVRC developed method for characterisinggasket performance specifies three classes oftightness. T1 (economy), T2 (standard), and T3(tight). A tightness class of T3 represents a massleak rate per unit diameter, of 0.00002 mg/sec-mm.This graph shows that the Flexitallic FLEXPROgasket achieves a tightness class of T3 at thelowest seating stress when compared to othertypes of gaskets. Results are based on PVRC testdata, using a gasket with dimensions of 20 x 21-1/2 diameter, with (20) 1 diameter bolts, and an assembly efficiency of 0.075. The FlexitallicFLEXPRO gasket is ideal for use in applicationswith limited bolt load and lighter weight flanges.

Corrugated MetalGaskets consist of acorrugated metal core, normally stainless steel, with a soft facing layerapplied to each face.
CORRUGATEDMETAL GASKETS
The corrugations provide resilience andreduce the sealing surface area of the gasketwhile the soft layer ensures outstandingsealing, even at low loads. Particularlysuited as a replacement to metal jacketedgaskets.
Heat Exchanger ApplicationsHeat exchanger flanges, owing to thedifference in thickness of the mating flanges, heat and expand at different rates.
This differential expansion can cause radialshearing of the gasket and therefore it iscritical that a gasket is selected whichresists radial shear and maintains a sealeven under thermal cycling conditions.
Corrugated metal gaskets have a provenrecord in problematic exchangerapplications, offering low relaxation, highresistance to radial shear and high levels of tightness. For this reason these gasketsare replacing more traditional gasket stylessuch as metal jacketed particularly on theseapplications.
Properties Excellent resistance to radical shear
Creates a tight seal at low bolt loads
Can be used when there is insufficientbolt load to seal spiral wound gaskets
Outstanding resistance to thermal cycling
Safe to handle and fit
Excellent thermal and chemical stability
Tolerant to flange imperfections
Practical Benefits No sharp edges for safe handling
Excellent rigidity ensures easy postingbetween flanges
Does not stick to flanges
Seating Stress RangeCorrugated gaskets offer reliable sealingperformance when seated within thefollowing seating stress ranges.
ThicknessAvailable in 1.5mm, 2mm and 3mm.
Flange Surface FinishThe recommended flange surface finish forcorrugated gaskets with sealing layers isfrom 3.2 to 6.3m Ra (125-250 RMS), this isalso referred to as a smooth finish.
Sizing GuidelinesDIN Sizes 10, 16, 25, 40 bar.ANSI Sizes Class 150 and 300lb. Other sizesavailable on request. Also available forvessel and non-standard applications.

Layer Material SelectionThe table (below) may be used to determinethe appropriate sealing layer material. We recommend the use of graphite layersfor most applications. Only in cases wheregraphite may cause media contamination, or is not chemically resistant, should analternative layer material be chosen.
GraphiteGraphite is a universal, high quality, nonasbestos sealing material featuring verygood chemical resistance, resistance to high fluctuating temperatures andpressures, non ageing properties plusexcellent gas tightness.
Graphite APX 2Inhibited grade for oxidation resistance.Ideal for use at temperatures above thelimit recommended for standard graphitegrades.
PTFEPTFE is a high quality synthetic materialfeaturing excellent chemical resistance, temperature resistant up to 260OC, goodageing resistance 1and excellent gastightness.
