Transcript of FLEXIBILITY
Case Studies Tell me what comes to your mind when I say these
words:
Strong, soft, fragile
• Example of American Trees - Trail marker
trees are hardwood trees throughout North America
• Wal Mart in Germany
Meaning Flexibility relates to the inward preparation for your
company, adaptability relates to your outward focus.
Your ability to show adaptability and flexibility is essentially a part of your emotional intelligence
Flexibility/Adaptability/Managing Multiple Priorities
When you can bend and not break, you may become a master at adapting.
Examples of change and adaptability:
Camera film rolls – digital camera,
type writers-computers, printing press-photo offset printing, telephone-pager-mobile-3Gsmart phones
Things which should not change – Principles, morals, ethics, relationships, good habits, right things and right practices
This Means…. This Doesn’t Mean…. Finding alternatives that will meet the
client’s underlying needs
Believing your view is the only one
Accepting others’ points of view as valid Believing that their opinion is the only
correct one
Flexibility applying guidelines or procedures
to get the job done and met organizational
objectives
Rigorously adhering to company procedures
Deciding what to do based on the situation
and adapting to fit it
Acting in ways that may have worked before,
but not adapting for possible differences in
situations.
Enthusiastically adopting new systems or
procedures
Wanting to do things the way you have
always done them
Changing your work plan when urgent
problems arise even though changes may
involve extra work
Ignoring problems and sticking to your
original work plan
Making an effort to work effectively with
others even though their preferred way of
working is different from yours
Disliking people who don’t do things your
way
comfort zone to the unknown Whenever you try to get people to change the way they
do things, most of them resist.
Such resistance is usually an off-shoot of the fear and anxiety involved when one moves from a comfort zone to the unknown.
If you want something to change, you need to change some thing
This could mean making huge life changes, or changing careers, but it could also mean changing your attitude towards situation.

! Always try to increase the Horizon of Predictability, reduce uncertainty and increase the length of certaintyby pushing the horizon of predictability into the future.
Importance of Adaptation It is wise to abandon good for the sake of better
It is smart to go from better to the best when you can afford to do it or when you deserve it.
Evolution from amoeba to human being testifies the importance of adaptation and development in organisms.
Those organisms which adapted evolved into higher forms of species and those which resisted change continued in the lower order of life forms.
That is why we are still able to find amoeba. The same is the reason for social strata.
Adaptation in behavioral perspective
In behavioral perspective, a person’s development is based on his ability make adjustments, compromises and sacrifices
Sacrifice good for the better; do not hang around the good things when you deserve the best things.
Success and Adaptation Your rate of success in this world depends on your
social skills (adjustment and adaptation) rather than your intelligence
i.e. SQ > EQ > IQ.
Do not wait for ideal conditions to start any work, they search for ideal jobs, ideal bosses, ideal colleagues, ideal friends which are not at all feasible in this ever changing world.
