The NGV Communications Group, best known as the GVR for its flagship Gas Vehicles Report, is the lead organizer. The GVR is making NGV2010Roma happen on behalf of the host NGV System Italia trade association (Stand E24), and the Italian oil and gas giant Eni, main sponsor. The world natural gas vehicles industry is doing more than 20% better than the International Association for Natural Gas Vehicles predicted in 2006, when it forecast 9 million world NGVs by the end of 2009, the GVR says. “These forecasts were not only realized but greatly exceeded: when all the data is in, it seems likely that the final number will be more than 11 million,” the GVR said May 31. “It will be no surprise if by 2020 the global number of NGVs has risen to 65 million.” The meeting takes place as the ongoing BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico results in increased calls for alternative sources of fuel. With the emergence of shale gas, coalbed methane and biomethane, it seems inevitable that NGVs will take an increasing share of the world transportation market. “We’re here to let the experts tell their stories and to let the exhibitors promote their ever-improving products,” says Brett Jarman, who is attending his first world meeting as IANGV executive director. Change Is Coming...The International Association for NaturalGas Vehicles executive committee andthe IANGV council approved significantchanges on Monday. They’ll be detailedby IANGV president Rich Kolodziej at thegeneral session this morning.

“As the international NGV industryprepares for its biennial conference inRome, momentum is building rapidly forNGVs right here in the U.S.,” according toRich Kolodziej, president of NGVAmerica.

“For the first time, theindependent gas producershave embraced NGVs as avital new market for naturalgas. Ford is making gas-prep ready vehicles, andGM has just announced

they will be producing NGVs againbeginning later this year.

“We’ve never had so manytruck and bus manufacturersoffering NGV options nor so manyEPA-certified aftermarket systemsavailable,” Kolodziej told F&F on theeve of NGV2010Roma.

“Decision-maker concern aboutgas supply has been obliterated.

“It’s now clear to everyone thatwe can produce enough natural gas – atvery competitive prices – to satisfy all ourgrowing needs,” Kolodziej says.

GM’s promise of CNG vans this year(and propane early next), with moremodels to come, represents “the piece ofthe value chain that’s been missing,” saysDavid Hill, VP with Canadian-AmericanEnCana, one of the E&P firms expecting tobe awash in natural gas thanks to newlyexploitable shale gas deposits.

E&P firms have joinedNGVAmerica in force, and theinflux of dues is allowing theassociation to beef up fivemarketing and communicationscommittees to aid in infrastruc-ture development — and thehigh-volume deployment of vehicles.

Chesapeake Energy, a prominent E&Pin Oklahoma, said in April that it wouldconvert 1,000 vehicles over the next 18

months, and all of its 3,300-unit fleet withinfour years.

The work of Clean Energy Fuelsfounder Boone Pickens has also served tostimulate the U.S. industry. Throughlobbying, personal appearances, paidadvertising and the internet, he has tire-lessly promoted his “Pickens Plan” forU.S.-produced natural gas for U.S.vehicles (pickensplan.com).

Italian firms including world gaseousfuels leader Landi Renzo (StandC10),which has opened a new shop for vehicleconversions in Los Angeles, and NGV

Motori are tacking the U.S. market.BRC (Stand E18) has

acquired FuelMaker and is applyingthe name across its compressorline. It’s appointed SouthernCalifornia’s Gas EquipmentSystems, Inc. as its U.S. exclusivedistributor for large compressors.

New CNG cylinders from atleast three suppliers were shown at lastmonth’s Alternative Fuel & Vehicles 2010show in Las Vegas.

Among them, Kioshi (StandD6)showed a lightweight Type IV tank.

Also from Argentina, Aspro (E10) andGalileo (D2) are entering the U.S. market.

Daimler-Freightliner and Paccar(Kenworth and Peterbilt) are both offeringfactory CNG and LNG trucks. Long-timeholdout Navistar is getting into the

business with dual fuel systemsfrom Clean Air Power, whichpromises more economicalheavy duty vehicles.

Rental giant Ryder isbringing natural gas into theworld of truck leasing, starting

in Southern California.“It appears that Congress is about to

approve an extension of our fuel credit thisyear (retroactive to January 1),” Kolodziej

notes, “and support in Congress for the(incentives-boosting) NAT GAS Act hasnever been greater…

“I’ve been involved with NGVs sincethe mid-80s,” he says. “This is the mostexciting time for the industry I can remember.”

In addition to heading NGVAmerica,Kolodziej is finishing up a two-year term aspresident of the International Associationfor Natural Gas Vehicles.

improvement” for the new line. The “unique valve

concept,” Oasis says,employs a floating ball

design with soft seat life of at least threetimes that of trunnion ball valves.

“The gentler action of the floating ballmeans the valve seat has minimal frictionload,” Oasis says. “Lower loads mean lesswear, smoother actuation, less forcerequired by the operator to turn.”

As with the new Toyota Wish vehicles (with 2.0-literengines) Melchers is using Type IV fuel tanks fromGermany’s Xperion Alpha (Stand D26) and fuel systemsfrom Italy’s OMVL (A1) for the older 1.8-liter taxis.

The Xperion Alpha tanks are not only lighter thanthe ones they replace, but they are a better fit with thevehicle suspension, allowing more room for fuel, saysGilbert von der Aue of Melchers Singapore.

Melchers also operates theworld’s largest CNG station byhose count: the CNergy facility on Toh Tuck Roadhas 46, all with TK17 pistol nozzles by Germany’sWEH (Stand D20). The installation has four drivenGalileo (D2) compressors — and room to expand.

EKC Is ExpandingIndia’s Everest Kanto Cylinder is reported-ly planning two plants in Gujarat state with

a combinedcapacity of 500,000CNG cylinders peryear. EKC hasalready producedmore than 4 millionCNG cylinders atthree plants in India, two in Dubai, andothers in China (Tianjin) and the US.(Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania).

Besides cylinders for all NGV types,EKC offers bulk units and cascades forstorage and for mother-daughter fueling .

BBiiooggaass ffoorr EEccoonniiccssDaimler is promoting natural gas-fueledMercedes-Benz Econic NGT trucks in partbecause they can be fueled by biomethane,notably in Sweden, where Sita (SuezLyonnaise des Eaux) is fielding 27 more,bringing its total to 98: “81 of the vehicleshave natural gas drive and more than 70of the trucks are powered by environmen-tally friendly biogas,” the manufacturer saidearly this year.

“The Econics in Sweden’s capital arebeing operated for the first time exclusivelywith biogas,” Mercedes said, “produced in-house from renewable sources.” Mostcomes from municipal sewage processedby the Stockholm Vatten water utility.

Sweden has more than 250 EconicNGTs, Daimler said. There are more than950 in Europe. The trucks are powered by6.9-liter, 279-hp (205 kW), M 906 LAGengines. Most are CNG-fueled with Type Icylinders by Mannesmann.

‘‘LLNNGG IIss HHOOTT’’There is a plethora of vehicle fueling opportunities forliquefied natural gas, with vehicles ranging from streetsweepers to long haul trucks, locomotives, and evenairplanes (the Russians tested LNG on a Tupelev jet in1989), reports Jeffrey Seisler of Brussels-based Clean Fuels Consulting.

The ships that are making possible a burgeoning world trade in theclean cryogenic fuel are also candidates to operate on it. That trade,which is forecast to grow dramatically, especially serving China and

Europe, sharply increases the practicality of LNGfor vehicles. Other strong markets include Australiaand the southwest U.S.

“Security of supply will strengthen because ofLNG trading,” Seisler says. Among the challenges,“International standards are moving forward but

need more expert stakeholder involvement,” while “support from fuelsuppliers remains fragmented and should be harnessed.”

Seisler, who formerly headed the European NGV Association, willmake his LNG Is HOT presentation here at 11am Wednesday.

In addition to the LNG Is HOT seminar which late last year broughttogether 66 LNG experts from 18 countries, Seisler’s CFC hosted astrategic issues workshop on dual fuel vehicles in Brussels late in March.
