You wont believe your skies. No matter what aircraft is screaming overMather Airport, it is always thrilling, but more importantly, its an experience. Youwont want to miss it, said Darcy Brewer, executive director of the CaliforniaCapital Airshow. The Airshow is an event for the whole family, providing youngpeople with endless exhibits and interactive displays exploring the world ofaviation and the many opportunities in science, technology, engineering and

The Patriots Jet Demonstration Team will also return with their signature high-flying action, officials said. Characterized by fast-paced formation flying, six-

ship diamond formation aerobatic maneuvers, andcomputerized red, white and blue smoke system, the Patriots will rock the skies of Sacramento.

The show will also showcase Stars & StripesForever, a salute to veterans. Attendees willstep back in time with an authentic theatrical

production featuring professional military re-enactors, parade of vintage warbirds,

    live USO-style music, costumesand pyrotechnics.

According to officials, 2014 isthe 70th anniversary of D-Day and the colorful tribute

will be a fitting way to honor one of the most importantevents of the 20th century while showing gratitude to the

men and women who have and continue to serve and sacrificein order to provide the freedoms of today. The airshow will showcase world-renowned aerobatic performers,

warbirds and vintage aircraft.Airshow fans will enjoy an action packed weekend both on the ground

    FOOD & WINE

During the harvest dinner, people can taste the

    grapes in the Madrona vineyards.

    tastetheharvestby laura newell / entertainer

As summer comes to an end, with fall beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 23, ElDorado County wineries are celebrating their most cherished time of theyear the harvest.

Madrona Vineyards in Camino is celebrating with their annual Harvest Dinnerfrom 6-10 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 6, surrounded by their vineyards.

The harvest for us is when the grapes hit maturity and we go through andhandpick the grapes, said Paul Bush, co-owner and winemaker. There isa window of opportunity for when you can handpick the grapes for wine tobest showcase and express the region. So this is probably the most important

decision that I make as a winemaker during the year. It really is the pickingdecision that determines the style of wine.Bush explained when grapes are picked at maturity, not when ripe, every

region will have a different flavor or style of wine to best express their region. Its an exceptional time for people to go wine tasting in the region because it

allows wine tasters to come up and actually taste the berries, Bush said. It is agreat time for both new and experienced wine tasters to come and experienceour regions full expression. When grapes are picked at maturi ty, they bestexpress our soil and climate of the El Dorado County region.

Bush said this year looks to be an exceptional year for El Dorado County wine

because the weather was warm, but not extremely hot.It looks like a great harvest this year, he said. I know this year will produce

some wonderful wine. The weather has been outstanding for grapes allowingfor very nice, even maturity.

The harvest dinner will include live music from 6-10 p.m., by the five-piece jazzband, tri tones.

Dinner will include a variety of appetizers, harvest salad, barbecue baby backribs, roasted sweet potatoes, gilled vegetable medley and cornbread withhoney butter. Dessert will include apple/pear crisp with ginger cream.

Our harvest dinner is a celebration thats held under the huge oaks in ourvineyard, Bush said. We encourage people to go out and taste the grapesand get a feel of the sense of completion for the year and a sense of somethingstarting our wine.

He said as a winemaker, this is an opportunity to show people the true senseof farm life that surrounds wine.

This is a chance for us to teach people what we do here and allows us togo back to our roots to educate about the farming life of wine, he said. Thisnight is about the overall feeling of being in harvest.

Walking into Bacchus House Wine Bar &Bistro, previously Bidwell Street Bistro, visitors will take in a warm, Tuscan feeling,

looking to the Roman God of wine Bacchus. Our restaurant is decorated with imported Italian

stone-tile tables and authentic bistro chairs, whilemaintaining the intimate and unassuming ambianceof a true gem of a Tuscan wine bar and bistro inbeautiful Folsom, said Proprietor Eric Adams, ofRoseville.

The design also includes rustic colors and ceilingdecorations created by Mario Arts to complete theTuscan ambiance.

The bistro opened three months ago and is nowworking on construction of a new front patio afterfinishing the redesign inside.

Its been a lot of fun, Adams said. Not onlyfrom a new menu standpoint, but also from a newatmosphere standpoint. We want to make this awonderful transition for our community.

Prior to opening the bistro, Adams worked withExecutive Chef Victor Octavio planning high-endevents and weddings. The partners have worked inthe business for nearly 30 years.

Before, we were taking the restaurant to you,Adams said. Now we are mainly focusing on ournew restaurant. This restaurant is a dream come truefor us. We are so lucky to have our restaurant openright here in our own backyard. This has been a goalof mine for years.

Did you know?Information provided by FolsomPowerhouse State Historic Park officials

The Folsom Powerhouse is part of a colorfulchapter of Sacramento history and is also anexample of the advance in the commercialapplication of electricity.

After coming to California in search of gold,Maine native Horatio Livermore realizedthe water of the American River could turngenerators for electricity in Sacramento, 22miles downstream.

Livermore bought 9,000 acres of land, gainingriver rights. In 1880, he donated nearly 350acres to the state prison board in exchange forconvict labor. In October 1889, prison inmatesbegan construction on Folsoms first dam. OnJan. 16, 1893, water was diverted from theAmerican River and the prison powerhousebecame operative.

Two years later, Livermore built the FolsomPowerhouse, which eventually replaced thesmaller prison powerhouse.

On July 13, 1895, the Folsom Powerhousesuccessfully transmitted electricity 22 milesto a power substation in Sacramento. Thepowerhouse was the nations first power plantto provide high-voltage current over longdistance lines for major city and industrial use.

This major event was celebrated on Sept.9, 1895, with a Grand Electric Carnival, wherepeople witnessed the lit streets. The StateCapitol was outlined with glowing lights and

electric trolley cars pulled floats with lightsdisplayed in various arrangements, all poweredby the electricity being sent from the FolsomPowerhouse.Vintage generators are still in place at the

facility, including the control switchboard, facedwith Tennessee marble. Visitors can also seeGeneral Electric transformers, each capableof conducting from 800 to 11,000 volts ofelectricity and the forebays and canal systemwhich brought the water from the dam.

Today, the Folsom Powerhouse is the onlynearly intact 19th-century hydroelectric plant

open to the public. The Folsom Powerhouse State Historic Park,9980 Greenback Lane, Folsom, is open fromnoon-4 p.m., Wednesday-Sunday. Group toursare available throughout the week by specialarrangement. For tour information, call (916)985-4843.The Folsom Powerhouse is located at 9980 Greenback

rocky northern California coast.Salt Point State Park, about 90 miles north of San Francisco onHighway 1, provides enough activities to keep families busy for days.

We arrived on a Friday morning, van crammed full of sleeping bags, atent, food, camping stove and folding table.

The park has ample camping grounds, but the sites ll quickly duringweekends, so they recommend making reservations.

The employee at the Woodside campground, on the east side of

Highway 1, was helpful and informative. After selecting our site, wereturned to the kiosk to claim the prime spot. The volunteers and workers offer great advice on a local level, since

they live in the region, and are happy to share their knowledge withvisitors.

Get out, explore and enjoy nature. When it was 100-plus degrees inFolsom and El Dorado Hills, it was in the low 70s at Salt Point State Park.

A winding Highway 1 offers breathtaking views of the Pacic Ocean.
