Greetings, Whew! You survived another Fair! Some of you are very happy. Some of you may be disappointed. In any form of competition, this is generally the outcome. One side happy. One side not so much. No matter what the outcome of your Fair competitions, everyone should feel a sense of accomplishment in com-pleting another 4-H year to the best of your ability. My questions for you…Did you learn anything from what you did and the things you experienced at Fair this year? Did you learn something working with or making your 4-H project this year? Did you give your 4-H project all the attention and work that you could have? Or was it just one of many things that you did? Can you and will you give your 4-H project next year the time and attention possible to do the very best job that you can? Or is it time to re-evaluate your priorities? Hopefully you are thinking about what you want to do in 4-H this coming year. 4-H enrollment will begin soon, so give your upcoming 4-H projects some serious thought. Choose a project you want focus on and will do some serious work in. Maybe choose one less project this year and put more work into the projects you keep. Make 4-H a priority this year…all year long! FROM THE EXTENSION OFFICE

What we learn at county fairs… “4-H does not mean the same thing to all people. Judges are hired for their opinion…not mine. Some people tell really good stories! County Fair isn’t always fair. Fair isn’t just 4-H. 4-H is more than just Fair. Pigs can’t fly, but they sure run fast! It’s easy to be blinded by the glare from the awards. A ribbon tied to the tail of a horse isn’t just there for decora-tion. 4-H members learn the most from other 4-H members. Cakes melt. Rules sometimes bend, but it isn’t good to break them. Judges deserve my respect…even if I don’t agree with them. Dogs really do love a dog show. Fair isn’t just a livestock sale. It’s good to be nice to policemen. City mayors can also be school teachers. The color of the ribbons is most important to the parents. One pocket can hold carnival tickets, keys, band-aids, $10.85, a syringe, a spray bottle, 4 sticks of gum, 10 ribbons and the tooth your youngest child lost this morning. Pockets aren’t a good place to store a snow cone. Ribbons can be replaced…broken hearts can’t. Everybody wants to win…everybody can’t. Turkeys are a great 4-H project. Ribbons make good place savers. 4-H clubs that work together, stay together. It’s okay to cry because you’re sad. It’s okay to cry because you hurt yourself. It’s okay to cry because you are happy. Grandmas are warm, fuzzy people, who have lots of hugs to give. Grandpas stand around with their hands in their pockets a lot, thinking a lot of things they don’t say out loud. Bad experiences are hard to forget. It’s not good to do my project the night before it is due at Fair. The sole of a lamb is somewhere near its heart…hmmm, maybe the member was thinking soul? Some peo-ple just don’t have bad experiences. Some people just have bad experiences. Priorities change. Perspectives change…a lot. Not everyone gets a kind word and a helping hand…but everyone deserves a kind word and a helping hand. To learn something positive at Fair is up to me. ALL 4-H projects are important...but 4-H projects are not the most important thing in the world.

Camping/Packing Trip Sept. 6-7 to Swisher Lake Trail Head in Eureka MT

Friday October 18 - Sunday 20, 2019 / Holiday Inn / Bozeman, MT Fall Training is the annual leadership development retreat for Montana 4-H Ambassa-dors and Teen Leaders. The event is planned, implemented, and evaluated by the State Ambassador Officer Team. Youth will leave the weekend prepared and excited to take the knowledge and skills they have gained and apply them in their counties. It is also a great place to have youth leaders exchange ideas and create a statewide network of resources. This year the officer team has chosen the theme “Leadership makes the Mission Possible” to emphasize the importance of developing one’s own leader-ship skills and have an impact on your local 4-H program and community.

Youth participants must be 14 on or before Octo-ber 1, 2019 and volunteer chaperones must be at least 21 and a certified volunteer. Registration cost is $162, including lodging (4 to a room) meals and program costs. 4-H Council will have some financial assistance for those attending. If you are interested in attending as an Ambassador, Teen Leader or Chaperone, please contact Nori in the Extension Office before the next 4-H Council meeting on September 26th.

A Great Big Thank You!!! Thank you to all the club Leaders, 4-H Members, and Parents of District 1 (B&F Livestock, Trail Blazers, Montford Egan Eagles, Rowdy Ropers, and Leaping Llama & Marching Alpacas) and District 2 (Golden Spurs, Dandy Dudes & Dolls, Country Cousins, Glacier Stars, & Glacier

View) for all your help in making this year’s Buyer’s Breakfast a big success!

Is your club interested in helping at the Corn Maze fundraiser? The fundraiser this year will be September 22nd. This fun community service activity raised $900 the first year and last year raised $1500 for the selected organization. It also spreads the word around the valley about Flathead 4-H. Your club could do something as simple as setting up a table and passing out information about 4-H. Or maybe your club would like to have a food booth. You could get a wagon from Pepsi and sell items to raise money for the cause. There’s a lot of possibilities. If your club is interested in doing something to help with this commu-nity event raising funds for people in need or you would like more information, please contact Nori at 758-5552.

The Flathead 4-H Foundation’s Annual Meeting is Tuesday October 22, 2019 at 6pm located in the Conference Room on the 2nd Floor of the Earl Bennett Building. Come find out what the 4-H Foundation has accomplished for 4-H this year!!!

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education enables young families, single

recipients and seniors to learn how to best use their food stamp dollars in providing

healthy nutrition for themselves and their families. Adults can sign up for a 6 week

course that is fun and provide the basic concepts of good nutrition. The only require-

ments to join in the classes are: that a person is receiving WIC assistance; either

receiving food stamps or are eligible to receive them; or are getting commodity foods.

Please call Caitlin at the Flathead County Extension office at 758-2448 to sign-up for

classes.
