1.Provide a description, explanation, or example of the new term. This is all provided on the filled out cards! Instead of giving students the filled out cards I use them to teach the new vocabulary and display them on my computer projector. 2.Ask students to restate the description, explanation, or example in their own words. After showing students the filled out cards, I have them write their own definition on the back of the blank cards. This could even be a fun form of/alternative to a vocabulary test! You could pass out a blank set of the cards with the words on the front and have your students fill out the cards! 3.Ask students to construct a picture, pictograph, or symbolic representation of the term.Students draw their own picture on the front of the card. 4.Engage students periodically in activities that help them add to their knowledge of the terms in their vocabulary notebooks.Word Sorting is an extremely powerful, research based method that helps students build on their knowledge of vocabulary words. I do this by having students make three columns in their vocabulary/writing journals or on a piece of paper. Then, they move the cards around on their desk until they find a way they can classify them into two or three groups.Next, they label the tops of the columns with the categories they came up with and write the words in each column. Finally, students share how they sorted their words with the class until all the different ways to sort/classify them have been shared. As students share I make a list of the ways they sorted their words on a piece of chart paper that we can add and refer to each time we do this activity. This is a great activity for students to do with partners and youll find that the categories become more and more creative each time you do this activity with your class! 5.Periodically ask students to discuss the terms with one another. One powerful method for guiding this discussion is called the Discussion Circle. Start by having your students hold their set of cards, splitting them into two groups and making an inside and outside circle facing each other in partners.Have the students on the inside circle pull a card from the deck and explain its definition and any other information about it to their partner and then have partners switch.Once both partners have shared have the inside circle stay put while the outside circle moves one space to the right.Ask students to keep repeating the process with their new partners. This activity is especially beneficial for your ELL students and you can even put a sentence frame on the board to help them get started speaking. For example: The word ________ means _________.One thing I know about this word is __________. 6.Involve students periodically in games that enable them to play with terms.Print the cards out single sided and use them to play memory with a partner Quiz yourself or a partner .Here are some tips: Shuffle the flashcards so youre not viewing them in the same order. Remove flashcards you have mastered so youre not wasting time. Copyright 2013 MrElementary.
