What is Flash Memory?
It is “a non-volatile computer storage that can
be electrically erased and reprogrammed. It is
a technology that is primarily used in memory
cards and USB flash drives for general storage
and transfer of data between computers and
other digital products.” Wikipedia
History
Founded in 1980 by Dr. Fujio Masuoka, an
employee of Toshiba.
The name “flash” was suggested by Dr.
Masuoka’s assistant, Mr. Shoji Ariizumi.
In 1984 he presented his idea at the
IDEM.
History
In 1987 Toshiba release a NAND based
flash memory.
This unit had faster erase and writing
times
Smaller in size with more memory
This product was also a lower cost than
NOR based flash memory
History
In 1988 Intel Corporations release a NOR based flash memory. This product has a long erase and
writing times.NOR based flash memory has an
endurance of 10,000 to 1,000,000 erase cycles.
Provided full addresses and data buses which allowed full access to memory in every location
Functionality
Flash memory is a very complicated
technology in its processes
It consists of two transistors.
Floating gate
Control gate
Functionality
Flash memory also contains cell
sensors.
This system here monitors the level
of the charge passing through.
Oxide layer
Acts as a barrier between the
floating gate and control gate
Usage in Society
“Provided 9.1 million in production and sale in
2008” according to Wikipedia.
Used in memory sticks for digital cameras,
camcorders, and mobile phones.
High demand for college students
This device is used often by college students
as a second hard drive for their school work.
Usage in Society Apple INC.
In 2008 apple was counted for 13 percent of flash memory sales.
Apple also has and MP3 player that plugs directly into your computer through a USB.
Flash memory has even hit the music industryMany record labels use jump drives to
save artists music tooThis also allows easy music
transportation

Future Trends
This field of technology has grown rapidly since its discovery.Mobile Phones
Flash memory wants to make mobile phones have their main storage be memory cards.
Flash memory wants to take over hard drives They still have not produced something with the capacity of a hard drive.
Future Trends
Flash Memory to slow down? This technology is at a stand still
with size and memory. Companies still haven’t developed a flash memory device with enough memory due to there lack of size and space to fit gigabyte’s.
