Howdy USTPA Members,My how time does fly! As grass starts growing again, it dawns on me that we are

well into the 2013 show year and I have yet to point out an important pinnacle to our membership. In the next couple of months, the USTPA will mark its 20th anniversary as an association. Twenty years ago, a group of individuals came together with the goal of forming a membership-based association to promote the sport of Team Penning. Like planting seeds, the collaboration of thirteen charter members with a unified goal has sprouted into one of the most popular associations of all the western riding disciplines and has expanded into the representation of the sports of Team Penning and Ranch Sorting to an international audience.

I can only imagine the time and thought that went into the planning for this organization by the charter members back in 1993. Team Penning was growing in popularity at that time but no one had successfully formed a national, membership-based association to represent the sport. It humbles me to think about the hours that they must have spent discussing rules, regulations and just how to go about organizing a new non-profit. Among the thirteen original charter member that served on the Board of Directors were; Marie Scovel (President), Joe Barnett (Vice President), Pete Loftin (Chair of Sanctioning), Duane Stephens (Chair of Contest Rules), Bill Stein (Treasurer), Rick Bucknum, Bob Hyatt III, Lonnie Lloyd, Steve Robert, L.W. “Bill” Shisler, Walt Taylor, Mike Vanzant and Pete Woods. In addition, chairs Paul Smith (Chair of Bylaws and Legal Matters), John Findlay (Chair of Membership Policies) and Wm. “Sonny” Carona (Chair of Judging) signed up to help develop the USTPA. On June 1st in 1993, the state of Texas officially recognized the USTPA as an incorporated non-profit association.

These individuals came together to form an official group to represent and promote the sport that they loved and their careful planning has resulted in a productive, growing and still loved Association. Over the rest of the year, I hope to share with you more information about the formation of our organization and our progress over the last 20 years. If you were involved with the Association during its formation in 1993, I’d also love to hear from you and get your insight. In the June/July issue of Flag’sUp! we’ll tell you the story of how we went from these thirteen original directors with just over $2,000 in the bank to an organization representing thousands of Team Penners and Ranch Sorters from throughout the world and awarding more than $1,500,000 in purses and prizes each year.

As spring always holds promise for new growth and opportunity, I hope you will join me in celebrating 20 years of Team Penning and Ranch Sorting with the USTPA. From the original 13 members to each and every one of you, it is the members that matter in this Association and we are what makes the USTPA what we want it to be. I look forward to riding and volunteering with you in our 20th year and am proud to call you my friends, teammates and fellow USTPA members.

Remember… it’s not about the wins you take, it’s about the friends you make.

Regards,

Jake Wells, DVMPresident, USTPA

President elect, Nick Mills, believes that giving back to the associations that we all know and love is the only way they can continue to thrive. “I’m passionate about the sports of Team Penning and Ranch Sorting, but I know that at some point in time the current leadership of the USTPA won’t be around to help anymore. Now is the time to volunteer while there is plenty of guidance.”

performance horse to me in 2003, and I credit him, as well as Gary Stanfill, for where I am today.” Like most USTPA competitors, Nick got his start Penning at local jackpots, but he soon realized the benefits of stepping up to the larger competitions. “David was on the Executive Committee at the time, so I was always hearing about the great things the USTPA was doing,” Nick states, “so it just made sense for me to give it a try.”Nick also credits horses for bringing his family together approximately eight years ago. “I had known my wife Jana’s mom and dad for about three or four years at the time, but had never met their daughter as she had quit riding after high school,” Nick tells. “I told them that if she ever met me, she would never go out with anyone else, and I was right!” Today the family is still riding, and also has a nineteen month old daughter, Peyton, who was born during the USTPA’s Mississippi Hot Streak show in Tunica in 2011. Nick says, “We were actually watching the event online at the hospital while waiting for Peyton to arrive!” It’s no surprise that Nick reports that baby Peyton is already showing a love of horses, and everyone is pretty sure that she will be in a USTPA youth class in a few years.

At age 31, Nick is also one of the youngest volunteers involved with the USTPA. When asked how he balances his leadership role with work, family, and horses, he laughs and states, “The office staff takes care of 98% of the problems. They really go above and beyond to make my job easier.” Nick’s main priority as President Elect this year is his role as Chairman for the 2013 World Championship. “This year is the 20th Anniversary event, so we’re planning to make it pretty special,” he states. The festivities will kick off on Sunday October 27th with a welcome reception, and end with the awards banquet and supper at the end of the week. “I’m pretty excited about the prizes that we’re giving away this year. We’ve listened to the members and are focusing on their feedback of the items that they want. Recipients should expect more western items that they can use, but of course we’re going to keep the championship trophy and buckle for first place.” Some other events that will be featured during the week are the live and silent auctions, the Ride with the Pro’s class, and some 20th Anniversary special events to be announced later. Nick does reveal, “We’re inviting the initial charter members to come celebrate with us, as without them, we really wouldn’t be here today.” You’ll probably be surprised to learn that while Nick has been riding his entire life, he grew up showing in gaited events, including both racking and walking horses. “When I turned seventeen, I decided I wanted to be a cowboy and got into the Quarter Horses,” he said. This was fueled even further when he met David Rainey in 1999, who let him borrow some horses and introduced him to the world of Penning and Sorting. “David has been a huge influence in my life. He sold my first real

all of them, except the ones that are over fifteen hours away,” Nick says. Besides the World Championship, their favorite events are held in Fort Worth. “It’s just such a neat place, and we treat it as a mini vacation whenever we go. I love seeing the big ranches and how their way of life truly revolves around their horses.”While Nick will be the first one to tell you that his love of the sport is not all about the wins, he and his family have had their fair share of success! “We took home a lot of seconds and thirds in 2012, but had great success at the Region Finals in both the #11 Penning and the #6 Sorting. Jana also won the #3 Sorting in Tunica.” Nick’s advice for folks just starting out is, “First – find a good horse. Second – Find someone local who has been doing it for a while.” The USTPA offers the Ride With a Mentor Program that helps match new participants with a seasoned amateur or professional. “There’s just nothing better than learning from someone who’s been doing it for fifteen or twenty years,” Nick states. Nick would like to conclude by telling everyone how much he’s looking forward to being the President in the upcoming year. “I love that this is such a family sport – where else can everyone compete together on an even playing field?” he asks. He would also like to encourage all current USTPA members to tell a friend this month about an upcoming USTPA event. Folks can just volunteer if they don’t want to ride yet. “People shouldn’t be afraid to call their Regional Directors to see what they can do. There are all kinds of committees ranging from ratings, rules and bylaws, to the World Championship Show. Just volunteering at the show to help set up panels can make a huge difference to management. We really do appreciate everyone, and I hope to see you again at an upcoming show!”

The Mills family get most of their horses from Brian and Sonya Buckner, with Buckner Cow Horses. “Brian does an excellent job of matching horses to the particular riders,” Nick claims. While they currently have six horses, their main three are a chestnut daughter of High Brow Hickory that has won over $36,000 in NCHA and was brought out of the broodmare band to become a Sorting horse, a ten year old gelding named Nemo, and a six year old Zack T Wood mare named Nelly. Nick says his favorite event used to be the Sorting because he was better at it, but he now loves Penning as it’s more of a special event. Nick and his family keep the horses worked by alternating between loping and letting the horses go around on the hot walker. “We really don’t practice a lot on cattle because I feel it keeps the horses fresher. I focus more on general exercise and keeping their face soft and body supple.” Nick does say that it helps that his horses are already so well trained that they are really just on a maintenance program. “Brian will occasionally tune them up for me at a show, but they’re really so broke that it isn’t even necessary most of the time.” When looking for a horse, Nick says he wants a horse with lots of cow, but that he also has to be easy to get along with. “My wife and I ride the same horses so they have to be able to adapt to our different styles. I like them very broke in the face and handy. Brian really does an excellent job of finding them for me,” Nick says. During the week, Nick helps manage Big Star, a family owned grocery store. “Not many people get to work with their in-laws for a job, and then also do a hobby with them on the weekends,” Nick

says with a laugh. His wife, Jana, works for Blue Cross Blue Shield, and is lucky to be able to work from home. Besides horses, both Nick and Jana enjoy an occasional golf game, along with duck hunting with Jana’s brother and his son. But, of course, horses are the family’s main focus, in which they show at least one weekend a month. “We especially enjoy the National Production Shows, and go to almost

Springtime – Worry?

Luke 12:25-26 “Jesus said, ‘Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?’” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

This month I want to explore those two verses in light of a new season. We have a choice to be joyful (spring) or to be in a state of worry? Every morning I read from the most marvelous devotional book (Jesus Calling) by a woman, Sarah Young, who most definitely has a strong personal relationship with Jesus. She writes each devotional as if it were Jesus talking. I share with you the reading for March 4th:

Refuse to worry! In this world there will always be something enticing you to worry. That is the nature of a fallen, fractured planet: Things are not as they should be. So the temptation to be anxious is constantly with you, trying to worm its way into your mind. The best defense is continually communication with Me, richly seasoned with thanksgiving. Awareness of My Presence fills your mind with Light and Peace, leaving no room for fear. This awareness lifts you up above your circumstances, enabling you to see problems from My perspective. Live close to Me! Together we can keep the wolves of worry at bay.

What marvelous words of wisdom that very well could have come from our Lord. Oh, that I could always put them in practice but sometimes the trials and tribulations of life come at us with a vengeance. I had a week like that some time ago and I’m sure you have also. It seemed like every direction I turned either something was broken or there was a huge problem with someone close to me. I was to the point of giving up and satan got the best of me on one particular day. But God in His infinite love and grace lifted me up to know the truth of His Word and His greater power. Then indeed, the next week almost every issue or problem got resolved.

I reflect on the passage from Jesus Calling about getting close to Jesus’ Presence by prayer and then the Thessalonians verse which reiterates the idea of praying continually (thoughts to Jesus are also prayers) . People wonder how we can give thanks in those trials. The key is “in” all circumstances. That’s not giving thanks “for” the trials themselves but that God will get your “through” those trials and He is with you “in the midst” of the trials. Praise be to Him! So, we must continually practice NOT worrying about our problems and trust in God that He is with us “in” them and will get us “through” them.

I read a story of a woman that was so certain that she had an incurable liver condition that she was making the situation worse. She went to her doctor who assured her that she was all right. He said “You wouldn’t know if you had this condition, because it causes no discomfort of any kind.” But she wasn’t convinced and gasped, “Those are my symptoms exactly.” Now that’s crazy.

I close with this illustration that I pray helps you through your days of travail.

Years ago, in the pioneer days of aviation, a pilot was making a flight around the word. After he had gone for some two hours from his last landing field, he heard a noise in his plane, which he recognized as the gnawing of a rat. He realized that while his plane had been on the ground a rat had gotten in. For all he knew the rat could be gnawing through a vital cable or control of the plane. It was a very serious situation. He was both concerned and anxious. At first he did not know what to do. It was two hours back to the landing field from which he had taken off and more than two hours to the next field ahead. Then he remembered that the rat is a rodent; not made for the heights; and made to live on the ground and under the ground. Therefore, the pilot began to climb. He went up to more than twenty thousand feet. The gnawing ceased. The rat was dead. He could not survive in the atmosphere of those heights. More than two hours later the pilot brought the plane safely to the next landing field and found the dead rate.

The pilot went on to say that worry is a rodent. It cannot live in the secret place of the Most High. It cannot breathe in the atmosphere made vital by prayer and familiarity with the Scripture. Worry dies when we ascend to the Lord through prayer and His Word.

So I conclude this message by encouraging you to soar to the heights and the Most High, God through Jesus Christ in times of joy (springtime) and worry. Worry can’t live in the very Presence of God. Open the Bible, read a devotional such as Jesus Calling which will also lead you to God’s Word, and pray for His guidance and strength. He won’t fail you and He’ll forgive you when you worry as you turn it over to Him.

At night turn all your worries over to God; He’s going to be up all night anyway.
