What’s New at the Museum

Celebrating our 15th Anniversary began in April during the 3rd Annual Cheer at the Pier. After that, one of our exciting achievable goals was to greet 10,000 guests in one year for the very first time. Through September we were ahead of goal, when suddenly Hurricane Matthew did more than “rain on our parade.” Attendance took a dive, late autumn events were cancelled and suddenly 10,000 visitors in 2016 began to seem unattainable. Soon a larger problem loomed: the lack of visitors also caused a loss in donations, and we scrambled to figure out what we could do.

First though, we realized that in the giant scheme of things, this isn’t the biggest hardship to come out of the Category 3 storm after-effects. One of those though, as every-one knows, was the washing away of a large portion of A1A. So when the roadway was restored in record breaking time this month, we were encouraged by that success. We decided to take the same “can-do” attitude -- and if you are willing to help, you “can-do” too!

We have created as many ways as possible to have fun raising money and getting as many people as possible through our front doors in the remaining weeks of 2016. And help us fight back against Hurricane Matthew...

Bandstand Boogie Boys Joe Pozzuoli & Ron Vath are ready for a 3-D movie!

Entering the transformed Halifax Plantation ballroom was truly a flashback in time to 1950’s “Happy Days!”

Surrounded by black and white checkered table cloths accented with hot pink décor and 45 rpm records, Danny and Sandy from “Grease” kicked off the sock hop with music that would soon have the party-goers, all decked out in flirty poodle skirts and rugged leather jackets, filling the dance floor!

Drinks, food, and fun, the Silent Auction table was loaded with enticing gift baskets and intriguing items, and the mood was set for a fantastic evening of partying with old friends and new!

Our annual Gala wouldn’t be complete without thanking our wonder-ful Sponsors, Donors, Guests, Staff, and Volunteers. Special kudos go to our outstanding Events and Fundraising Coordinator, Denise Collins. Denise has a knack for bringing the Gala team together in such a fun and engaging way, it makes all the hard work more like a series of parties for our awesome gala committee members. Countless hours go into such a huge endeavor, and the energy and devotion of our staff and volunteers -- who we are also lucky to call “friends” -- are the reason it all appears to be such an effortless scene of pure fun and fantasy, a perfect evening out to let loose and transport to a simpler time of laughter and light. ~ Gin Giaramita

The 15th annual FBHM fundraiser was a tremendous success! I would like to thank all the volunteers who put in countless hours getting everything just right. It is an absolute pleasure to work with a team that is completely dedicated to this event and the cause that it benefits.

Our unbelievable decorating committee, Beth & Bill Mount, Valerie Walker, Carol Fisher and Charlene Jackson, completely transformed the Halifax Plantation Ballroom to look like a picture-perfect scene from the 50’s! “Grease” played on the big screen in the drive-in vignette complete with a pink Corvette and authentic car speaker, their soda-shoppe was the real deal with root beer floats and make your own sundaes. Photo-ops included a giant jukebox, and a life-size Elvis who was also kidnapped several

times, and shocked a few people by speaking to them as they entered the Ladies Room. (At left, Talking Elvis between Valerie Walker on his left and Beth Mount on his right.)

DJ Surfin’ Vern Shank from Surf 97 Radio kept everyone rockin’ to the fun fifties hits while spinning the 45s just like American Bandstand’s Dick Clark. Entertainment guru, Cindy Miller, enlisted our Danny and Sandy to kick things off. (Thank you, FPC teacher Amy Fulmer and students Atlantae Jackson and Me-linda Patterson.) Cindy kept guests completely engaged with “Name that Tune” contests, trivia games, hand-

jive dance-offs, and a limbo contest. (Photo middle of page: Laruen Watkins (left) holds the limbo pole with Beth “Lucy” Mount for a guest as Team Gala Volunteer Carol Fisher celebrates her limbo success with a big laugh.)

Later when the lights dimmed, it was announced that “Elvis had entered the building!” Impersonator, Capt. Kirk Haskell, proceeded to enter with a full-on entourage, handing out teddy bears and leis

to swooning guests. (Kirk “Elvis” Haskell performing in photo right.)

The very talented, Lauren Watkins (photo bottom right in the middle) travelled well over an hour to emcee her 5th Gala. With great enthusiasm, she kept the evening timeline running smoothly. (Special shout out to Ryan Crabb and the Hampton Inn & Suites for provid-ing Lauren’s accommodations.)

Thanks to logistics and publicity specialists, Sue Norton, Virginia Giaramita, and Kelli O’Reilly, who worked tirelessly to get the word out using every medium possible! They were aided by Cindy Dalecki (photo bottom right, she is pretty

in pink on the left), Michelle Brown, who hosted us on Flagler Splash, Rebecca DeLorenzo, Chamber Chat, and the entire 97.3 The Surf team, who ran daily radio shout-outs promoting our sponsors and ticket giveaways!

Everyone on Team Gala deserves special kudos for acquiring the many auction and spon-sor donations we received! Mary Craig will probably need new leather for her shoes, and Beth Mount might have spent a few dollars along the way! Special thanks to Kim Carney for letting us invade Eagles Nest Storage with giant jukeboxes and other décor. Thank you to Karen Young and Linda Jones for running the entire guest check-in and auction check-out seamlessly! Speaking of auction, thank you to my right-hand, Kelly Miller, for the many late nights packaging and organizing auction displays and baskets donated by so many won-

derful local businesses and community partners who are irreplaceable! Many thanks to all the “behind the scenes” volunteers, Mary Craig,

Sandra Siepietoski, Mary Calkins, and Ronee King, for the many hours spent in meetings staring at my poorly constructed spreadsheets. This party received kudos and compliments from so many attendees. Thank you all. Looking forward to an amazing 2017!

~Denise Collins

Bandstand Boogie: Photographs & Memories!

Eve ryone Den i se thanked deserves a “group hug” -- as do many unnamed friends of friends and family members. And also “thank you” to our guests for the gala’s success, and for making the event a fantastic party!

As you can see in the photo at right, Denise is far right, smiling as always. Her bouyant enthusiasm makes Denise a natural at coordinating and leading our Museum volunteers, old and new. We are all so lucky to have her. ~~ Teri Pruden

PS: It seems that someone is always forgotten at “thank you time” and it is often the person, busi-ness, or group who most deserves recognition. If that “someone” is you or someone you know, please remind me at (386) 439-6262 or [email protected] so we can give a Thank You “shout out” in the next newsletter.

Director’s Note: On the opposite page, we thanked the really fabulous volunteers who donated time, energy, and creativity. On this page we feature the equally necessary gala sponsors, along with members, friends, and businesses that gave cash or silent auction donations. If you know someone here, or are a customer, take time to say thank you for us. If you aren’t a customer, stop by and see what their business is all about! Join me here as we thank and appreciate them all. ~Teri Pruden

Thanks-Giving & Gift-Giving!Baking, decorating, getting together -- what else do the holidays

mean -- shopping! We want you to know that as museum support-ers, you have a few painless ways to do a little more than just shop while enjoying the chore more at this time of year...

Black Friday& Shop Small Saturday: If holiday shopping is lackluster

as you find the same old things at the same old shops, come on over to the beach Friday and Saturday to check out the many new merchants that have opened this year, and say hello to your long time favorites. At the beach, you can always count on finding unique gifts, even local custom items. That includes the Museum, so do stop in to see our Flagler Beach Pier magnets, bottle stoppers and ornaments; our historical throw blankets, even Christmas cards of our parachuting Santa, and much more. See pages 10 and 11 for details and pictures. Open 10-4, seven days a week.

Cyber Monday: Now that you are home (maybe still in your jammies) looking over on-line deals, take a minute before you buy and sign up for AmazonSmile and designate the Flagler Beach Historical Museum as your charity. Then at check-out, you can feel good knowing that a percentage of your purchase total will support the museum with no cost to you. It takes just minutes to do and you can keep your current account. You can even split your donations amongst more than one charity! Go to AmazonSmile.com for more information.

Giving Tuesday: Can’t make it to the beach and a percent-age of your shopping doesn’t feel like enough of a gift, why not join the 100s of 1000s who donate to their favorite charities on this day? Purchase an individual membership for as low as $12, family memberships for $20. You can even use PayPal at the museum’s website: flaglerbeachmuseum.com.

First Friday: Did you know that we are open until 9pm each month on 1st Fridays for Flagler Beach’s Music in the Park? This month on 12/2 we’ll be giving a free Historical Downtown Walking Tour at 4pm in honor of our 15th Anniversary. Stay after for free treats and fun. And Saturday 12/3 we’ll tour again at 11am and 4pm. The festivities at the museum will continue. Please call (386) 517-2025 to reserve a tour spot or for more information. Check out the next column to learn more about our 15th Anniversary Celebration!

We w a n t to reward those who help us try to reach 10,000 visitors by 12-31-16, and we will do it by raflling off prizes and giving out gifts and prizes for some donations and for some of the participation activities. If you come to the mu-seum, there will be so many ways to win!

Sign our guest book! We’ll thank you with a raffle ticket, and a gift for our 9400th visitor and every 100th visitor in December.

Facebook “Foto” Fridays! Come in to get a second raffle ticket if you post a photo of yourself at the museum on any Friday in 2016.

Drop Off a Toy for Rotary Share. If you are bringing a donated

toy to the parade anyway you can leave it in the museum collection boxes, and we’ll thank you ... guess how, with a raffle ticket for a separate drawing! (There will also be a Rotary Share truck in the parade to pick up gifts, but alas, no raffle tickets!)

Become a Museum Member, or Renew. You’ll receive a token of our appreciation based on your contribution level. (And a raffle ticket!). The year 2017 marks Flagler County’s Centennial and a year-long slate of events are being planned to feature and celebrate everything Flagler County! Proclamations will be issued by all city commission as well as the county this December, and a new Centennial website and Facebook page will announce and promote the events and activities that commemorate 100 years of history.

The biggest celebration will be Saturday, April 29, 2017 at the Government Services Building. The date repre-sents the day that Flagler County was officially established, (actual date April 28, 1917). Activities will include reenactment of meeetings of the first county commission and first school board which was established at the same time. The April 29 event will include many family activities such as a 5k fun run/walk for all ages, music by school groups, an antique car show, photography contest, a performance of “The Three Wives of Henry Flagler”, as well as an appearance by a Henry Flagler re-enactor, food trucks, free children’s train rides and other youth activities, plus much more!

But that is not all that will happen to commemorate the Centen-nial. Throughout the year many existing events will carry out the Centennial theme. That includes our very own 4th Annual Cheer at the Pier! We’ll celebrate 100 years of history complete with historical re-enactors on the pier. Much more is planned for 2017 so watch this space and flaglerbeachmuseum.com for additional information!

A delightful addition to downtown Flagler Beach, Frankie Alice’s Beachside Boutique is owned and operated by an equally delightful couple, Michael and Ingrid Ceribelli. Having only opened their shop on July 1st, Michael and Ingrid were eager to become part of their community, meet the locals, and market their new business endeavor, so when Museum Board Member Extraordinaire Beth Mount popped in to tell them about the “Bandstand Boogie” Gala, they jumped at the chance to become “Chart Toppers” sponsors! And we were so happy to welcome them as an integral part of our Party!

A native Floridian, Michael met Ingrid, who is from Norway, while stationed with the Navy in Spain and Ingrid was there studying abroad. After living in Norway for a while they settled in Daytona Beach Shores. Initially they planned to open their shop near family in the Daytona area, but found Flagler Beach to have the type of vibe they were looking for. When they checked out Flagler Beach while spending some time here bodyboarding, they liked the community feel and Ingrid says “it felt like home.”

Michael praised city staff, “the City of Flagler Beach welcomed us with open arms. It was a lot easier here (to start a business) than other cities,” and he’s grateful for all the positive support they have received from everyone. Frankie Alice’s Beachside Boutique, is named after Michael’s grandmother who passed away in September. She was into fashion and an entrepreneur, an inspiration who he af-fectionately called “Grandma By the Beach.”

Frankie Alice’s Beachside Boutique, located at 209 S. 2nd Avenue, has an array of beautiful goods for sale including unusual cork bags and accessories from Spain, leather items from Greece and the United Kingdom, and sandals from Honduras. Michael and Ingrid are very selective of their stock and they purchase directly from individual manufacturers. (Continued on opposite page.)

(Continued from opposite page.) You’ll find handmade soaps, locally-crafted soy candles, and some fair trade items. They carry

clothing made from beautiful fabrics, including vintage-style surf shirts and slacks for men, and ca-sual wear for women, including plus-size fashions. Business is doing well, through word-of-mouth, promotion by Vern Shank and Surf 97.3 radio, social marketing, and of course, their sponsorship of the Flagler Beach Museum’s 2016 Bandstand Boogie!

They really enjoyed the event; Michael’s favorite was the limbo contest. Ingrid especially noted the fun she and her sister had during the hula hoop contest, which prompted her sister to buy some of the giant bright plastic rings afterward so they could practice! Check out Michael and Ingrid’s photo at left as they posed in the pink Cadillac/drive-in theatre motif at the Gala. We certainly have enjoyed getting to know Michael and Ingrid, appreciate their gala sponsorship, and wish them all the best with their new Flagler Beach business!

busiest since 1971, Tropical Storm Isadore, although comparatively light in strength, also wreaked havoc with the Flagler Beach Pier. The Associated Press reported that the storm “washed away 304 feet of the 864 foot pier and another 128 feet were so badly buckled the pier had to be closed temporarily.”

The News-Journal article stated “the economy of Flagler Beach, an oceanfront city of 3,000, depends on tourist revenue generated by the 58-year-old pier, which was the town’s major attraction.”

At that time, the rebuilding of the pier was estimated to cost $275,000. Other damage costs included $225,000 to replace walkways and $1.2 million a mile to restore three miles of dunes. The article re-ported Mayor Charles Sessions as saying he believed the city should rebuild the pier, then sell it, and former Mayor George Wickline, 81 years old at the time, remembered rebuilding the pier after storms in 1928, 1942 and 1957 and that he “can’t imagine what the city would be without Flagler Pier.” Emphasizing the importance of the pier, the article also claimed that “without the pier, city officials said tourists would probably bypass Flagler Beach on their way to other destinations.”

The hurricane season of 1984 wasn’t quite done with Flagler Beach in September, when a late three-day November Nor’easter hit on Thanksgiving Day, Flagler Beach suffered additional damage to

The History Corner: Hurricane History

Hurricane Matthew in early October was one of the most severe threats to Flagler County in recent history. Flagler residents may have been lulled into complacency either by past good fortune avoiding storms in our area, or just by being new to Florida. This storm was decidedly different. The warnings of a direct hit by the Category 4 hurricane were dire, but we were fortunate once again that the storm finally approached as only a Category 3 which clipped the coast on Friday, the 7th of October.

As residents surveyed the damage under sunny Florida skies the following day, many found that damages were significant. Over 200 feet of the just over 800 foot Flagler Beach Pier were swept away. Destruction of the Scenic Highway A1A, both south and north, turned Central Avenue into a main thoroughfare for over a month.

This was not the first time these iconic Flagler Beach landmarks have succumbed to the brunt of a severe storm. In a 1960 Daytona Beach News-Journal article recounting the damage caused by that September’s Hurricane Donna, Francis W. Edmonson reported:

“Flagler County residents, who felt the results of [Hurricane] Donna at a cost of approximately $60,000, began yesterday to clear debris, saw down uprooted trees, repair roofs and upright TV anten-nas... The pier had weathered another hurricane in 1944, when 300 feet was swept out to the sea. This was replaced in the same year.

“Donna claimed approximately 50 feet of pier Sunday morning. Construction was to have begun yesterday morning to extend the pier 96 feet. The pile driver equipment was already on the end of the pier. This equipment valued at approximately $700, also was swallowed up by the sea.”

George Wickline, the owner of the equipment and involved with salvaging the wood lost from the pier and its repair, estimated the cost at approximately $4,800 back in 1960. That’s in stark contrast, of course, to recent costs for the pier’s repair. Having been ravaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 and incurring additional damage from various storms, repairs to the pier reported in November 2013 were close to $1.2 million! Current estimates due to Hurricane Matthew are still being assessed.

The Flagler Beach Pier has been no stranger over the years to repeated assaults due to Hurricanes and other severe storms. It again suffered extensive demolition when Hurricane Dora hit in September 1964. Another Frances Edmonson article gave this eyewitness account:

“There was a blasting wave. Then the right cor-ner of the pier was lifted up. As it lifted into the air, another wave seemed to break the piling as easily as a person would break a match stem. It was raining and I attempted to take a picture but for seconds all I could see was salt spray. When I looked up from my camera the end of the pier was gone and only a splintered board seemed to be dangling. The next huge wave came and even the dangling board went out of sight.”

Edmondson’s article further relates her difficulty in getting the event reported, and accentuates how technology has changed, “The rains became harder and wherever I saw a phone booth I tried to call The Daytona Beach News-Journal. All lines were out.” While reporting options were so different back then, the type of damage reported couldn’t be closer to what we have currently experienced with Hurricane Matthew. A September 11, 1964 News-Journal photo shows damage to S.R. A1A that replicates photos of the devastation that impacted the road this year.

the Pier, walk-overs, and A1A, with waves eating away at the dunes. Highway repairs began quickly with Department of Transportation crews using heavy equipment to place large coquina rocks and sand to restore the dunes. Hurricane Gloria hit the next year in 1985, producing large ocean waves that caused a 30 foot section of the Pier which had been previously weakened the year before, to break loose. A March 1996 storm’s strong winds and high tides caused about 140 feet of planking and the T-section of the Pier to wash away. And now in 2016, though we again have suffered destruc-tion of our dunes, A1A and our Pier, we will push through to put the pieces back together again.

Through the years the countless assaults on our coastline, A1A, and the Pier, have not caused us to give up striving to main-tain what makes us special in Flagler Beach. They have brought us together as a community, sharing a special bond with a common goal to preserve this place that means so much to all of us, and to keep it as special and perfect as we feel it is. When we experienced Hurricane Matthew’s threat to our Flagler Beach, we looked out for each other, we helped our neighbors, we joined together to support our small businesses, and to put our town back together. While we would never wish another devastating storm to disrupt our little piece of paradise, we can feel confident that whatever may come our way, Flagler Beach will come together to rebuild and to celebrate how fortunate we are to live here! ~Gin Giaramita
