Fundamentals of Franchise Management
(FFM) - 29th Intake (14th – 15th May 2015)
Fundamentals of Franchise
Management (FFM) is the first
foundation course on franchising by
Franchising and Licensing Association
(FLA) Singapore. FFM will introduce
participants to multidisciplinary areas
involved in the franchising practice.
Using lectures, case studies and
assignments, FFM will provide
participants the necessary theories,
background information and practical
learning experiences for their executive
responsibilities.
FT Consulting, together with
Franchising and Licensing Association
(FLA Singapore), will conduct the
course.
Topics covered the key areas of:
• Understanding the Franchise
Business
• Franchise Manuals and Marketing
• Legal and Commercial Framework of
Franchising
• Financial Considerations in
Franchising
. Using case studies and real world
examples, together with active
participation and discussions, the
course proved to be time and money
well spent for the participants.
Expanding Internationally through Franchising
International law firm Bird & Bird recently conducted a seminar on the hot
topic of Expanding Internationally through Franchising and Related Models,
in conjunction with the Franchising and Licensing Association (FLA)
Singapore. The successful seminar saw a turn-out of over 60 participants
from across various sectors, including the F&B, education and the hospitality
industries. The event was kick-started by an opening address given by Mr.
Alban Kang – Managing Partner of ATMD Bird & Bird Singapore, and Mr. JJ
Lavigne – Executive Director of FLA Singapore.
Brand protection expert, Ms. Lorraine Anne Tay (ATMD Bird & Bird,
Singapore), shared on the legal strategies for brand protection and gave her
insights on the importance of management and protection of intellectual
property as companies expand internationally. Mr. Graeme Payne (Bird &
Bird, London) – who regularly advises on franchising issues – went on to
illustrate the various structures and mechanisms which can be adopted by
business owners in their international expansion through franchising,
touching on the different franchising and management models available.
Another area of concern for business owners is that of dispute resolution for
franchising and related arrangements. Mr. Boey Swee Siang (ATMD Bird &
Bird, Singapore) – who has more than 15 years of experience on civil
litigation and international arbitration – took the floor and highlighted the
various possible areas of dispute which can arise in a franchising
relationship,
The final segment of the seminar was a lively and engaging panel discussion
chaired by Dr. Mark Abell (Bird & Bird, London) – who is recognized as an
internationally renowned franchising guru. The other members of the panel
were Ms. Lee Lin Li (Tay & Partners, Malaysia) and Dr. Sven-Michael
Werner (Bird & Bird, Shanghai).

FLA Members Interview : Mr Eric Lim, Director, MyGym Singapore
FLA: Good morning Eric. You are the CEO of my Gym. Can you tell us a bit more

Eric Lim: I don’t think I can because it is really taxing, very tough, but a very nice
sport that teaches perserverance in our young days and develop great team spirit.

In order to offer FLA members, the
government sector and investors a
more comprehensive understanding
on the franchise industry in
Singapore, FLA launched a nation-
wide study retail survey (building up a
massive database with over 17,000
retail
outlets) covering 100 shopping malls,
all the existing MRT/LRT stations and
Bus interchanges in Singapore. The
sample population excludes the
stores that scatter across streets,
residential areas, hospitals, hotels,
office buildings, etc. Then FLA filtered
out the franchise brands and
produced analytic summaries that are
condensed in that neat little survey
report.
