The FKG Tour of Toowoomba Subaru National Road Series event is on a spectacular roll.
Entering its third year, the event is a top drawcard for emerging Australian and international professional cyclists.
Its stature on the Subaru National Road Series calendar has sparked heightened media interest across Australia.
The 2012 FKG Tour of Toowoomba is extending to a four-day event with the addition of a team time trial.
For the purists, the Tour now boasts all four elements of traditional road racing.
This is a welcome improvement for riders who are looking to progress to elite competition on the world stage.
Foundation sponsor F.K. Gardner and Sons Group deserves credit for seeing this potential in the early days.
Fellow sponsors, police, the Department of Transport and Main Roads, SES personnel and community volunteers play an important part in preparations and during each stage.
Council is proud to support the Tour’s growth and promotion as well as providing sponsorship through the Community Support Grant Program.
Good luck and safe racing to all competitors.

From humble beginnings in 2010 the FKG Tour of Toowoomba has quickly earned a reputation within cycling ranks, Australia wide, as being one of the best on the Subaru National Road Series calendar.
The tour helped put Queensland on the NRS map with a highly acclaimed debut featuring three days of racing over four stages contested by 15 teams.
Last year’s field grew to 20 teams with the New Zealand junior national team adding an international flavour to the event.
This year’s tour has been expanded to four days and five stages with the addition of a Team Time Trial on the Saturday, June 16.
The Tour of Toowoomba’s rapid acceptance and growth has been attributed to several features.
Race organisers have placed a strong emphasis on race variety which includes.-
• Selection of different courses each year;
• Selective stages to suit sprinters and climbers;
• Testing stages and a reputation for it’s testing hill-top finishes.
An event priority has also been placed on securing the best Commissaires available – a factor well appreciated by the cyclists as well as team officials.
Louise Jones was at the helm of the inaugural tour while Toowoomba local Greg Vincent was in charge of last year’s event.
Events Queensland has recognised the potential of the FKG Tour of Toowoomba and has considerably boosted funding through their Regional Events Development Program.
Toowoomba Regional Council also continues its heavy involvement with the tour, lending valuable support.
Sponsors remain solidly behind the tour with local, state-wide civil construction company FK Gardner extending its naming rights sponsorship.
Other major sponsors include Mark and Heidi Ward’s McDonalds Restaurants, Highfields Village Shopping Centre, Triple Play Cycle Wear, The Chronicle and Temporary Fence Hire.
They have been joined this year by Capilano Honey Shotz (sponsor of the Queen’s Park Criterium), New Hope Group (sponsor of Stages 3 and 4) Arrow Energy (sponsor of the King of the Mountain jersey) and WIN News (sponsor of the Most Aggressive Rider jersey).
With an increase in sponsorship, team participation and tour stages the future of the Tour of Toowoomba looks bright.
The Tour is an initiative of the Toowoomba Cycling Club with club life member and Cycling Queensland board member John Osborne filling the role as event director. Cycling Queensland president Mike Victor also plays a prominent tour role as its technical director.
Osborne said the progression of the tour to four days helps bring it in line with traditional tours on the world stage.
“The tour is entering another exciting stage after only three years and some of this year’s additions have a real traditional flavour,” Osborne said.
“The introduction of a tour leader’s jersey, I think, will add a lot to the event.
“The addition of the team time trial also helps round off the tour, based on tradition.”
The inaugural tour was won by Patrick Shaw from the Virgin Blue RBS Morgan team.
Shaw pulled off a stunning back-to-back tour double last year with another brilliant ride for the Genysys Wealth Advisers team.
The question now on everyone’s lips is can Patrick Shaw make it three out of three?

Tim Francis one of the finest and most respected commissaires in Australia was tragically killed in an accident involving his motor scooter and another motorcycle at Advancetown near the Gold Coast on Sunday 22nd April.
Tim had been appointed as the chief Commissaire for the 2012 FKG Tour of Toowoomba. His wife, Robyn, Tim’s pillion passenger on the 22nd April, was also to officiate at this years Tour.
Robyn suffered multiple injuries and was in ICU for some days. Thankfully Robyn is making steady progress but still has a long journey ahead of her.
In recognition of Tim’s years of service to cycling and the prominent role he has played on the FKG Tour of Toowoomba the management committee decided to name the first stage of this years Tour in Tim’s honour.
Tim’s tragic death will leave an enormous gap within cycling circles at a local, state, national and international level.
Our thoughts and prayers are very much with Robyn and her family.

In 2012, entrants will have a choice of a 30km, 80km and 125km rides that meander through the regional centre of Toowoomba and the picturesque Darling Downs. This year families can also get involved in the appropriately named Family Ride around the newly opened Toowoomba Cycling Criterium Track.
