Force

A student carries out an investigation to determine the strength of a spring byarranging the spring and the wooden block on an inclined plane as seen in the abovediagram. He compresses the spring by exerting a force on the spring. When the forceis removed, the distance traveled by the block up the slope is measured with ameasuring tape.

a. Explain what is meant by elastic potential energy. [1 mark]

b. Explain why the spring needs to be compressed with a large force to produce alarge displacement of the block.

c. If a stone of mass 20 g is placed at the end of the spring and a force of 30 N isapplied to compress the spring a distance of 5 cm, calculate,
