This assembly guide must be reviewed for familiarization with safety markings and instructions before assembly of the kit.

BEFORE APPLYING POWER

Verify that all components and parts are inserted in the right location and correct orientation. Visually inspect that there are no cold solder joints, or short-circuits.

GENERAL INFORMATION

1. DESCRIPTION

The DP-1010 Mic Preamp Kit is a clean, low-noise, digitally-controlled mic preamp using Texas Instrument’s PGA2500 chip.

The DP-1010 Mic Preamp Kit includes PCB and parts for the following boards:

* XLR.IO Board;* Logic Board with OLED Screen Display, rotary encoder and switches;* Preamp Board; * Ready-made/Pre-assembled PGA (Programmable Gain Amplifier) module; * Ready-made/Pre-assembled DRV Output Driver module;* Dual-core Microprocessor board;* Miscellaneous parts like ribbon connectors, knobs, PCB standoffs and nuts. Other features of the DP-1010 Mic Preamp are: * SmartLabel - a user selectable channel labeling system, just press down the rotary encoder switch to cycle through* SmartGain - intelligence to minimize output clipping by automatically lowering gain by 1dB The DP-1010 Mic Preamp also incorporates ESD Protection, and overload protections for Analog and Digital inputs.

The DP-1010 Mic Preamp requires a dual power supply (+/-16Volts) and (+48Volts) for phantom power for operation. The Power Supply is not included as part of the kit, but is a separate purchase or you can use your own. If you prefer to use our Power Supply, the PSU-2448Plus+ Kit is perfect for this purpose.

2. TOOLS & EQUIPMENT REQUIRED

A few basic tools and equipment are required to assemble this kit. These basic tools are not supplied with the kit.

2.1. Soldering Iron and Lead - We recommend a temperature adjustable soldering iron. DO NOT USE A 100 WATT SOLDERING GUN. A small to medium-sized soldering tip is required to solder the small parts. You may use Lead-free or 60/40 lead-based solder.

2.2 Cutter - You will need a cutter to cut component leads and wires.

2.3. Solder Sucker Pump - If you made a mistake and need to desolder a component, you’ll need one.

2.4. Multitester - Used for measuring resistance, continuity, and voltages.

2.5. Magnifier & Lamp - I recommend a clean and well-lighted space for your assembly area.

2.6. Other Tools (not required, but nice to have) - Component lead bender, vise, tweezers, wire stripper.

3. ASSEMBLY GUIDE FOR LOGIC BOARD

BEFORE YOU BEGIN: Pick a clean work area where you can leave your work-in-progress unattended if you need to.

Keep individual components in their labeled zip bag until you’re ready to solder them. Kit components have been sorted and labeled for your convenience. The labeled components lessens chances of insertion errors, inserting the wrong component into the wrong location. Keeping the components in their zip bags also reduces chance of small parts getting lost or misplaced.

Best practice is to solder the smallest and/or shortest components first. Then solder the taller and larger components next. Big bulkier components like switches, jacks, big capacitors are soldered last.

3.1A Solder all 1/8 watt resistors. Take note the solder pads are small, so use a fine tip soldering iron. DO NOT use too much solder. If you’re not confident of your soldering job, you can solder both the top and bottom solder pad of the resistors.

This resistor is 22R.These resistors are 1K

3.1B Solder the 1/4 watt resistor. This resistor is not electrically connected to anything, and it’s main purpose is to act as a spacer when you install the OLED Display later on.

3.2 Solder all Ceramic capacitors.

3.3 Solder the (3) LEDs, Light Emitting Diodes, from the opposite side of the board. IMPORTANT: The LEDs have polarity, the Long Leg being the (+) Anode. Insert the LEDs correctly. DO NOT OVERHEAT THE LEDS during soldering or you may damage it.

3.4 Solder the SHORT button located on the lower right corner of the board. This is the RESET switch. ASSEMBLY TIP: These tactile switches have (4) legs, so you may have to gently nudge them into the hole with your

fingernails. When all (4) legs are aligned, you can gently press down the switch to lock-in and sit on the board. Then turn board over and solder legs from the other side. BE PATIENT & CAREFUL aligning the legs into the holes.

3.5 Solder the (3) long shaft tactile switches. Refer to 3.4 for tips on mounting these switches. TIP: For easier work, insert and solder these switches ONE AT A TIME. Make sure switches are flushed to the board and

vertically straight.

3.6 Flip the board again, and solder the 2x6 Male Headers.

3.7 Solder the (2) Female Sockets. Make sure they are positioned vertically up, as straight as possible and not tilted. IMPORTANT: Check and verify that each terminal is soldered properly!!! Some of the terminals will be later covered when you

install the OLED Display, so make sure all terminals are soldered. There are (40) pins to check.

3.8 Flip the board and solder the encoder switch. Mount the rotary encoder on the same side as the tactile switches. ASSEMBLY TIP: Solder one of the tabs first. Make sure pot is positioned vertically straight and flat on the board. Then flip the

PCB and solder the rest of the terminals on the other side.

3.9 Solder the OLED Display Panel. Make sure to solder it as straight and level as possible. You’d need to solder the pins from the opposite side.

NOTE: The solder pins of the OLED Display will be very near the plastic body of the Female Headers. Take care not to touch the plastic headers with your soldering iron.

If your OLED Display isn’t properly square and aligned with the PCB, you can CAREFULLY detach the Dis-play from the PCB and re-attach it straight. It is attached via double-sided sticky tape and the factory may have it attached slightly crooked.

3.10 Insert the MCU Module into the female header sockets. IMPORTANT: Take note of orientation of MCU Board. Also, make sure all pins line up with their corresponding hole. Failure to align the pins correctly or inserting the MCU backwards will result in a damaged MCU Module when powered up. You will have to buy another MCU Module if this is damaged.

Congratulations on your successful build!

If you’ve built all (3) Boards, XLR.IO Board, Preamp Board and this Logic Board, you can start interconnecting them together using the supplied ribbon cables.

The 2x5 Ribbon Cable connects the Preamp Board and the Logic Board. Make sure to align the red/black stripe on the same side as the dot marking on the PCB Board.

The 2x6 Ribbbon Cable connects the Preamp Board and the XLR.IO Board. Make sure to align the red/black stripe on the same side as the dot marking on the PCB Board. Refer to the photo below:

4. OPERATIONPress the push button labeled PAD to toggle the -20dB Pad.

Press the push button labeled 48V to toggle 48V Phantom Power.

Press the push button labeled REV to toggle Polarity Reverse.

Turn the Rotary Encoder clockwise to increase gain, turn counter-clockwise to decrease gain. UNITY GAIN: The lowest gain setting is 0dB for Unity Gain.

The first gain setting after 0dB is +10dB, and then increments by 1dB.The first time you turn on the preamp, it will also default to +10dB for its gain setting. Each “click” on the rotary encoder doesn’t necessarily correspond to an increase or decrease of +/- 1dB. But if you continue turning it clockwise or counter-clockwise, the gain should also increase or decrease appropriately.

The OLED Display has a screen-saver feature. After several minutes of no activity (i.e. the controls weren’t changed), the screen display will dim a little bit. When you touch a user control (turn the rotary encoder or push any of the switches,) the display will turn back on to full brightness.

SmartLabel: Each press of the Rotary Encoder switch allows you to cycle through all the Channel Labels available.

SmartGain: The preamp monitors the output level for overclipping conditions. If the preamp detects too many clipping events occuring, the preamp will automatically lower gain by 1dB.

There is an available RESET switch located on the lower right corner. If you press this switch, the firmware reboots and resetsthe preamp to initial conditions, displays the splash screen, resets the PAD, 48V, and REV state to OFF.
