Five Years of Atlantic Algebra Center
Atlantic Algebra Center (AAC) came to existence on September 1, 2006. Since then
AAC organized six International Workshops attended by about 200 participants, includ-
ing renowned specialists from 12 countries, twelve mini courses by prominent professors
from Argentina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Germany, Israel, Spain, United Kingdom and
USA. In addition to our Algebra Seminar, we maintained a series of AAC Colloquia
talks given by our visitors, including our colleagues from the universities of Atlantic
Canada. Our visitors gave several Distinguished Colloquium Talks at the Department of
Mathematics and Statistics of Memorial University. AAC supported the research work of
four postdoctoral fellows and four graduate students and organized five Undergraduate
Algebra Competitions for the students of the universities of Atlantic Canada. Our funding
and other forms of support have been generously provided by Atlantic Association for
Research in the Mathematical Sciences and Memorial University of Newfoundland.

Fields Institute Professor Barbara Keyfitz
Our objectives and governance
The main objective of the Atlantic Algebra Center (AAC) is the promotion of the research and study in Algebra and
its applications at participating universities of Atlantic Canada. At its start, AAC enjoyed the support of the Atlantic
Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences (AARMS)
and Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN). Algebra tradi-
tionally has been a strong point at the Department of Mathematics
and Statistics of MUN. The algebraists of MUN maintain strong ties
with their research colleagues at various universities of Canada
and throughout the world. Our Advisory Board includes Yuri Manin
(Max Planck Institute and Northwestern University), Sudarshan
Sehgal (University of Alberta), and Efim Zelmanov (University of
San Diego). AAC is governed by the Board of Directors, currently:
Yuri Bahturin (Director), Edgar Goodaire, Mike Parmenter, and
Yiqiang Zhou. Dr Mikhail Kochetov serves as Deputy Director.
Since the third year of AAC our membership has extended to include algebraists from other universities of Atlantic
Canada: Margaret Beattie, Sara Faridi, Collin Ingalls, John Irving, Mitja Mastnak, Roman Smirnov, and Hugh
Thomas. In 2011 Atlantic Algebra Centre won financial support from AARMS as Collaborative Research Group for
next two years. In AAC application for this support it is mentioned that, according to Mathematical Reviews, the total
number of publications authored by AAC members is over 500, with more than 1700 citations. The total number of
books and monographs authored by the members of the group exceeds 20.
AAC organizes mini courses in various areas of Algebra and applications by prominent scholars (2 – 3 times a
year), an annual thematic workshop, colloquia and seminar talks, and exchange visits of research colleagues in
Atlantic Canada. We support the research of Algebra postdoctoral fellows and active graduate students. We organ-
ize Algebra competitions among the students of MUN and other universities of Atlantic Canada and take part in the
events promoting Mathematics in this part of Canada and beyond.

POLYNOMIAL IDENTITIES IN ALGEBRAS. II
September 2 – 6, 2011
This workshop was a sequel to the one held in St.
John’s in 2002. Six world known experts in the area of
polynomial identities, delivered twelve lectures: Pro-
fessors Eli Aljadeff (Technion, Israel), Vesselin Dren-
sky (Bulgarian Academy of Sciences), Antonio Giam-
bruno (Palermo, Italy), Plamen Koshlukov (Campinas,

khail Zaicev (Moscow, Russia). One-hour lectures
were also given by Professors Murray Bremner (Sas-
katchewan, Canada), Alex Gordienko (Memorial,
Canada), Darrel Haile (Purdue, USA), David Riley

this time was the participation of many young enthusi-
astic algebraists, especially from Brazil, Israel and Italy. They all reported their first results and took active part in
the numerous discussions. The total number of registered participants was 32.
In addition to the scientific program the participants of the workshop explored St. John’s and its environs, including
Bay Bulls, NL, where they took a boat tour where they could see the last whales of this season and an island inhab-
ited by Newfoundland’s signature birds puffins.

Visit of AARMS Distinguished Lecturer
Prof. Dr. Hans-Jürgen Schneider
June 3 - 12, 2009
In June 2009 Atlantic Algebra Centre jointly with colleagues from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, organized a visit
of AARMS Distinguished Lecturer Prof. Dr. Hans-Jürgen Schneider.
Professor Schneider is a world recognized specialist in the area of Hopf Algebras. His whole mathematical career
is closely related to the Mathematical Institute of the University of Munich. Since 1978 he has been a Full Professor
at that university. He works in close cooperation with his international colleagues in Asia, Americas and Europe. His
joint work with colleagues in Argentina brought him the title of the Corresponding Member of the National Academy
of Sciences (Cordoba), Argentina. An impressive publication list of Professor Schneider includes such prestigious
journals as Annals of Mathematics, Advances in Mathematics, Crelle Journal, Inventiones Mathematicae, Journal of
Algebra and others. His latest fundamental results on the classification of pointed Hopf algebras obtained jointly
with Professor Nicholas Andruskiewitsch have appear in Advances in Mathematics and Annals of Mathematics.
Professor Schneider is an excellent lecturer, and his lectures and surveys on Hopf Algebras proved to be a useful
introduction to this challenging area of Algebra. The schedule of lectures by Professor Schneider at the Universities
of Atlantic Canada was as follows:
June 3: “Hopf algebras and root systems I”, St. John's, NL, Memorial University
June 4: “Hopf algebras and root systems II“, St. John's, NL, Memorial University

Publication Activities
Atlantic Algebra Center maintains a web site http://www.mun.ca/aac, which is a part of the web site of Memorial
University of Newfoundland. In addition to various information about AAC, one can find on this web site a number of
papers submitted to the AAC workshop and mini courses held at MUN.
Some of our workshop have been accompanied by the publication of Proceedings. Among these is the book
“Groups, Rings, Lie and Hopf Algebras” containing proceedings of the conference under the same title held at MUN
in 2001. The book appeared in Kluwer Academic Publisher as volume 555 of the series “Mathematics and Its Appli-
cations” in 2003, edited by Yuri Bahturin. Another example is the special issue of the Journal “Acta Applicandae
Mathematicae”, vol. 108, No. 1, October 2009. This volume contains proceeding of the second conference “Groups,
Rings, Lie and Hopf Algebras” held at Marine Station of MUN in Norris Point, NL, in 2007. The guest editors of the
volume were Yuri Bahturin and Mike Parmenter. Currently in preparation are the Proceedings of the most recent
AAC conference “Polynomial Identities in Algebras. II” held at MUN in September 2011. They will appear in a spe-
cial volume of “Serdica Mathematical Journal”.
AAC takes part in the monograph series by Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences. Cur-
rently two AAC mini course lecturers Alberto Elduque and Mikhail Kochetov are working jointly on the monograph
devoted to the theory of Graded Algebras developed in their mini courses delivered at MUN in 2008 and 2009.
During these five years of work most of the activities of AAC were reported in the newsletters of AARMS on their
web site http://www.aarms.math.ca/ and in the form of printed flyers.
