Five Reasons to come to the
Autumn Fair!
With the Arndell Anglican
College Autumn Fair only a week
away I thought it would be fitting to remind our
college community why it would be such a good
thing to support this excellent event. So here
are five reasons why I believe the event is worth
supporting.
1. It is a great way of building community.
At the heart of a great school is a great
community and your presence on the day will
be a strong indication as to how great a
community and college we are going to be.
2. It is a major fundraiser for the P&F. The
P&F, this year, has committed to purchasing
more seating around the college as well as
exploring some further capital investments for
the school. This involves quite a bit of
investment and this will only be achieved if we
are willing to support events such as the
Autumn Fair. So come on down, grab yourself
a bargain, have a bite to eat or a turn on the
rides.
3. It is the College Open Day. Each year
we combine the Autumn Fair with the College
Open Day and this is a way of showcasing, to
prospective parents, what the College has to
offer. As a result of this combined event we
enrol new students and highlight to existing
parents what a great place Arndell is. So bring
a friend and show off what Arndell might offer
them and their family!
4. You’ll have a great time. God willing, we
will have lovely weather. Whilst you munch on
your toasty and sip your coffee, the children
can run rampant around the college grounds
visiting the jumping castle, playing mini golf,
having a go at the lucky dip or trying to smash
each other on the dodgem cars.
5. What else would you be doing?
Relaxing at home, reading a book, watching
television, having an afternoon nap?
Sounds a little BORING to me, so get yourself
down to the Autumn Fair and support the work
of the P&F and the College as we seek to make
2015’s Autumn Fair a great one.

Several Arndell College students from both the Junior and Senior schools were honoured for their excellence
in oral communication at the ASCA Awards Ceremony held at the Kings School on March 28th.
The recipients were:
Junior Centre Medal - Greer Johnson
Junior Studio Medal - Olivia Vella
Junior Studio Achievement Medal - Ruby Gorton and Alicia Smith.
Senior Centre Medal - Rose Maree Rodgers, Emily May
Senior Achievement Medal - Kyle Hollis -Watts
The hall was filled with award recipients, teachers, family and friends from schools and centres from Sydney,
Canberra and country NSW.
The guest speaker was actress Charlotte Hazzard, who studied at the Western Australian Academy of
Performing Arts (WAAPA) and has performed in Packed to the Rafters, Anzac Girls and Winter. Charlottes
completed the ASCA program when at school and spoke of the benefits of oral communication skills in her
area of expertise and today's competitive world. Her valuable message was to work hard while striving to
reach your dreams and not give up when obstacles are put in your way.
Brooke Waters and Lachlan Werner (Year 11) were awarded the ASCA Certificate of Communication. This is
a professional qualification which demonstrates proficiency in oral communication.
Congratulations to the award winners for their dedication and high level of achievement in public speaking
and communication.
At the end of the school holidays, Year 12 Geography students travelled
to South Australia to complete three fieldwork case studies.
Upon arrival in the Festival State, we headed to Port Adelaide to examine
the decline of the old working port and the transformation brought about
by recent urban renewal initiatives.
Later that day, Haigh’s Chocolates became our focus.
Visiting the company’s iconic Rundle Mall store, we
considered the relationship between a business and its
location. The following morning, a factory tour was on the
itinerary - a chance to see the skilled chocolate makers at
work. Students learnt about the processes involved in the
production of chocolate, the locations of cocoa suppliers, and
geographical factors which influence this local enterprise.
Everyone valued the many opportunities to gain firsthand
experience of Haigh’s products!
That afternoon, we headed down the Fleurieu Peninsula
towards the Limestone Coast. Reaching the small coastal
town of Port Elliot, we established our base in a restored
Edwardian guesthouse, overlooking Horseshoe Bay.
To finish the day, a sunset walk along the granite headland,
displayed South Australia’s rugged beauty.
On Sunday, as the sun rose over the Great
Southern Ocean, it was time for us to climb
aboard the Spirit of the Coorong, cruising into the
internationally significant wetlands which are
formed at the very end of the Murray-Darling.
Students learnt about the factors which are
putting the ecosystem at risk, and examined
traditional and contemporary management
practices. In all, an excellent trip full of new
experiences, stunning scenery, and plenty of
learning!
A special thank you to Mrs Jennifer Barter for coming with us.
Poetry is “a faceless expression of the soul”.
– Jack McCulloch, Year 11
In English we endeavour to make poetry exciting, so I needed to come up with an engaging introductory lesson for my Year 11 class. Students were split into small groups and moved around stations of poetry activities such as ‘defining poetry,’ and ‘Poetic Devices.’ One activity involved using an iPad to create a poem using random words. This iPad poem was created by Jack McCulloch, Emma Purser-Hanson and Raymond Xian
At another station students were given an extract from Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness and used a black marker to create their own poem. Here is Isaac McGregor’s poem.
At another station, I wrote out each word of Emily Dickinson’s ‘If I could stop one heart from breaking’ on Post-Its and jumbled these into a random order. Students then had to try to put the poem back together resulting in some interesting pieces.
Finally, students watched a Spoken Word poem on YouTube and created their own, focusing on an issue that mattered to them. This poem was composed by Katie Jungherr, Rachel Vielhauer, Henna Hisham-Thalari and Michaella Cefai. This media we call social, Is anything but, When we open our computers, It’s our doors that we shut These people we call our friends Are anything but Needless to say, the lesson was noisy but fun. It was great to see students engaged with the tasks and each other. By the end of the lesson they seemed more positive about our poetry unit and I am looking forward to extending the learning of this high spirited class. "I found the group work productive and Miss Kenny created an enjoyable learning environment for everyone". – Declan Horne
