His nine-year-old son Bruno became friends with an imprisoned boy named Shmuel on the other side of the fence near the family’s home. Bruno brings food to him and sneaks into the camp to help Shmuel find his father. 2. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society 2018 (Historical Fiction, Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, 2008) **Available at the Navy Digital Library/Overdrive This is a story about a book club formed in Guernsey during the WWII German occupation. Juliet Ashton, the main character and an author, leaves London on a book tour across England. By chance, she receives a letter from a total stranger who lives in Guernsey who was seeking additional books by an author named Charles Lamb. Juliet sends the requester more books by Lamb and asks the writer about the literary society she belonged to and began corresponding with its members. Juliet later travels to Guernsey to interview members and do research on life under occupation WWII. Readers especially like the witty exchanges between the book’s characters.
