HILTON4REAL – After an offseason filled with accolades, much pressure and expectations were placed on FIU’s Heisman hopeful T.Y. Hilton. The senior from Miami has more than delivered through his first two games. Last week, playing in front of a national ESPN audience, Hilton showed the world why he’s considered one of the most dangerous players in the country as he torched the Louisville Cardinals for an FIU-record 201 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns. For his efforts, T.Y. was named the Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week. After a quiet first quarter, Hilton struck seemingly out of nowhere when he caught a pass on a slant route and darted past the entire Cardinal defense for a 74-yard touchdown. On FIU’s next possession, with the Panthers facing third-and-long, Hilton split the Louisville defense and caught a pass over the middle before out-running both safeties into the end- zone for an 83-yard score. The two touchdowns are the third and fourth longest receiving scores in FIU history. At the end of the day, despite Louisville head coach Charlie Strong emphasizing the importance of stopping Hilton, FIU’s Heisman hopeful had 268 all-purpose yards, giving him 551 through two contests. In FIU’s season-opener against North Texas (9/1), Hilton racked up nation-best 283 all- purpose yards, 12 shy of his own school record. Hilton wasted no time showing why he was named the Co-Preseason Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year as he took the opening kickoff 62 yards to set up the FIU offense with a short field. On FIU’s next drive, Hilton scored on the first play when he left a defender in the dust for a 60-yard touchdown catch. Hilton finished the contest with 132 receiving yards on seven catches, 49 rushing yards on two attempts, 92 yards on two kickoff returns, and 10 yards on a pair of punt returns. For his efforts, Hilton was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week, and also the Sun Belt Player of the Week by Rivals.com. Hilton was also awarded a Hel- met Sticker by ESPN.com and was named a CollegeFootballPerformance.com Honor- able Mentiion WR performer. MR. WOLRDWIDE – After his second touchdown catch against Louisville, “TY Hilton” became a worldwide trending topic on Twitter.

WINSTON’S TURN – The linebacker position has always been one of strength for the Panthers. In 2011, redshirt-junior Winston Fraser is the veteran and he’s off to a scorch-ing start. The 2010 Honorable Mention All-Sun Belt Conference selection opened the season with 11 tackles against the Mean Green, eight of them unassisted and one for loss. Against Louisville, Fraser had eight tackles, six of them unassisted. More impor-tantly, however, was a play he made in the passing game as he gave FIU an early 7-0 lead with a 71-yard interception return for touchdown in the first quarter. The 71-yard return is tied for the fourth-longest in FIU history.

KICKOFF WITH A BANG – For the first time since 2004 (at Youngstown St.), and the first time as an FBS (Division I) program, FIU opened its season with a victory. The Pan-thers blasted the North Texas Mean Green on September 1 to open the season with a W and in the process set a program record for points in a season opener by putting 41 points on the board. FIU followed that up with a 24-17 victory at Louisville (9/9), putting FIU at 2-0 for the first time in school history.

LET’S GO CARROLLING – FIU quarterback Wes Carroll returns for his senior season after breaking nearly every FIU single-season passing record in 2010. Carroll’s set pro-gram records for passing yards (2,623), passing touchdowns (16), completions (226) and total offense (2,615). The 2011 season is off to another great starty for Carroll who had completed 20-of-43 passes (69.8 %) for 441 yards and three touchdowns.

DP’s RUN FOR THE RECORDS – Darriet Perry’s 16 rushing touchdowns in 2010 are not only the most single-season rushing touchdowns in FIU history, but they are the most single season touchdowns ever by a Panther. In 2011, DP will make a run at the all-time record in both categories. After scoring two touchdowns against North Texas (9/1) Perry now has 23 rushing touchdowns, which is just one behind Rashod Smith’s school record for rushing TDs (24) and four behind teammate T.Y. Hilton for the most touchdowns ever at FIU (27).

HICKMAN GETS ANOTHER EARLY START – As a freshman last season, defensive end Greg Hickman got off to a quick start, picking up sacks in his first two games as a Panther. This season Hickman is off to yet another scorching start as he had two sacks in the opener against North Texas (9/1), including one that forced a fumble. Hickman followed up that performance with another dominating outing against Louisville (9/9), amassing seven tackles, including three for loss. The sophomore defensive end is now fifth on the team with 11 tackles, but first with 4.5 tackles for loss.

HERE’S LOOKING AT YOU, KID– The eyes of the nation will be on FIU’s Heisman hopeful T.Y. Hilton this year. The senior receiver has been named to the Fred Biletnikoff Award watch list. The Biletnikoff Award is presented to the top receiver in college football. Hilton is one of three Sun Belt Conference players to appear on the list, joining Ladarius Green from Louisiana and Dwayne Frampton of Arkansas State. In August, The Louis-ville Sports Commission named 50 college football student-athletes to the 2011 Watch List for the Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse, and FIU senior and Heisman hopeful T.Y. Hilton made the list for the second year in a row.

BROKEN RECORD - The 2010 version of the Panthers broke all sorts of program records, not the least of which was wins in a season with seven victories. Here’s a quick look at some of the records that were broken in 2010:

Career TDs - T.Y. Hilton - 28Career Kick Return Yards - Hilton - 2307Career Punt Return Yards - Hilton - 428 Career Kick Return TDs- Hilton- 4Career INTs Returned for TD - Anthony Gaitor - 3Single Season Rushing TDs - Darriet Perry - 15Single Season Passing TDs - Wes Carroll - 16Single Season Total Offense - Carroll - 2615Single Season Total Points Scored - Jack Griffin/Darriet Perry - 96Single Season FGs - Griffin - 16Single Season PATs - Griffin - 45Single Season Team Rushing Yards - 2438Single Season Team Rushing TDs - 25 Single Season Team Rushing YPG - 187.5Single Season Team Total Points Scored - 374Single Season Team Total Offense - 5136Single Season Team TDs - 46Single Season Team Sacks - 33Single Game Total Yards - 668 Single Game Rushing Yards - 448 Single Game Rushing TDs - 4

BACK FOR MORE – Coming off the most successful season in program history, one that saw the Panthers capture their first-ever Sun Belt Conference championship, as well as their first bowl appearance and victory, a thrilling 34-32 victory over Toledo in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, FIU is set to build upon last year’s success and make another run at the conference crown.

The Panthers return 15 starters from last season’s championship squad, including Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year and Heisman hopeful T.Y. Hilton, as well as four other All-Sun Belt selections from 2010.

PICK TO CLICK – FIU, the defending Sun Belt Conference champion, has been picked to repeat as champion in the SBC preseason coaches’ poll. The Panthers also earned seven Preseason All-Sun Belt selections, including Heisman hopeful T.Y. Hilton who was selected as the Co-Preseason Offensive Player of the Year along with North Texas running back Lance Dunbar.

Hilton was also selected as a preseason all-conference wide receiver and return specialist. Joining Hilton on the preseason all-con-ference squad are offensive lineman Caylin Hauptmann, linebacker Winston Fraser, defensive lineman Tourek Williams and safety Jonathan Cyprien. FIU’s seven selections were the most of any Sun Belt team.

MILLER TIME - Sophomore cornerback Sam Miller is quickly making a name for himself, as he has two pass breakups to go along with eight tackles, three for loss, and a pair of sacks. The two sacks came in FIU’s upset victory over Louisville (9/9)

DEFENSIVE SHUTOUT – Even though North Texas scored 16 points in FIU’s season opener (9/1), none of them came at the expense of the defense as the Mean Green scored off two fumble returns and a safety.

THUNDER AND LIGHTING – Running backs Dar-riet Perry and Kedrick Rhodes posses different skillsets, Perry being a power back and Rhodes possessing more speed, but both were extremely effective against North Texas (9/1), combining for 171 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 31 carries. Rhodes earned the start, and immediately made an impact, scoring two of FIU’s first three touchdowns. Perry came off the bench, and made his mark, scoring a pair of touchdowns to give him 23 for his FIU career.

GRIFFIN FOR GROZA – FIU junior kicker Jack Griffin was named to the 2011 Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Watch List. The list features 30 of the top place-kickers in college football. Griffin is the only Sun Belt player to be recognized on the watch list.

In 2010, Griffin had one of the best seasons of any SBC kicker hitting an FIU record 17-of-20 field goals and connecting on all 45 extra points, which is also an FIU record. He finished the season riding on the shoulders of his teammates after kicking the game-winning field goal at the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl as time expired in FIU’s 34-32 win over Toledo, the first bowl victory in school history.

RECORD-SETTING START – Against North Texas (9/1), the FIU offense came out of the gates firing on all cylinders as they scored touchdowns on their first four possessions of the ballgame to take a 28-0 lead after a quarter of play. The 28 first quarter points are the most FIU has ever scored in the opening period of a ballgame, and are just three shy of the program-record for points in a quarter.

IMPACT FRESHMEN – FIU is no stranger to having freshmen make an impact right away. Af-ter one game in 2011, it seems like the young-sters will be at it again. In the opener against North Texas (9/1), freshman Richard Leonard earned a start and went on to record five tackles,

CRISTOBAL GETS EXTENDED – In August, FIU Executive Director of Sports and Entertainment Pete Garcia announced that Head Coach Mario Cristobal, who led the program to its first-ever conference championship and first-ever bowl appearance and victory in 2010, has signed a new contract extension with the University through the 2016 season.

Cristobal, who was named the 2010 Sun Belt Coach of the Year, led the Panthers to their first-ever Sun Belt Conference championship and went on to defeat Toledo in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. In the classroom, the football program has excelled under Cristobal. Over the past four seasons, FIU has registered 86 all-conference academic honorees. This past year, football recorded its highest multi-year APR score, registering a 936, 30 points better than the previous year’s score. Since the arrival of Cristobal, the football team’s multi-year APR score has improved by 51 points.

Entering his fifth season at FIU, Cristobal was named the program’s second head coach on December 19, 2006.

BLUE RIBBON - Last June Blue Ribbon Football Yearbook released its 2011 predictions and it picked FIU to win the 2011 Sun Belt Conference Championship, as well as picking senior WR/KR and Heisman hopeful T.Y. Hilton as the Offensive Player of the Year.

Along with picking the Panthers to repeat as Sun Belt champs and Hilton to earn Offensive Player of the Year honors, Blue Ribbon named Hilton (WR/KR/PR), Josh Forney (DL), Tourek Williams (DL), Winston Fraser (LB) and Jonathan Cyprien (DB) to its preseason all-conference squad.

GOOD TO BE CAGED – This year, for the first time ever, the Panthers will play six home games. The Panthers will play four of their first five games at Alfonso Field at FIU Stadium, including this week’s home-opener against the Mean Green.

This season also marks the first time ever that the Panthers open the season against a conference opponent.

THE WORLDWIDE LEADER - In August, ESPN and the Sun Belt Conference announced that the September 24 matchup between FIU and Louisiana would be broadcast on ESPN3. The televised contest will mark the seventh of the year for the Panthers - Sept. 1 vs. North Texas (ESPN3); Sept. 9 at Louisville (ESPN); Sept. 17 vs. UCF (ESPN3); Sept. 24 vs. Louisiana (ESPN3); Oct. 1 vs. Duke (ESPN3); Oct. 18 at Arkansas State (ESPN2); and Oct. 25 vs. Troy (ESPN2).

PANTHER PROS - Two former Panthers recently made their pro debuts as Anthony Gaitor was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Greg Ellingson signed a rookie free agent contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Both players saw action in their team’s preseason openers, with Gaitor registering a sack in his first game.

DEFENSIVE DIFFERENCE – FIU’s defense will be under new direction in 2011 as former UConn Defensive Coordinator Todd Orlando has taken over the reigns of the Panthers’ D. Orlando comes to FIU after a 12-year stint with the Huskies, including six seasons as the defensive coordinator. Orlando had coached UConn’s inside linebackers since the 1999 season and, in 2005, he also assumed the role of defensive coordinator. In 2010, Orlando’s defense helped the Huskies capture the Big East championship, and play in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.

REMARKABLE TURNAROUND - To explain the Panthers’ rise to the top of the Sun Belt Conference one needs to look no further than the improvements in the running game and the defense. In 2010 the Panthers ranked 27th in the country in rushing offense after finishing 107th in 2009. The Panthers’ defense, which ranked 119th in the Nation in 2009, finished 2010 ranked 61st in the country.

T.Y Hilton, a senior from Miami, has earned a reputation as one of the most dangerous players not only in the conference, but in the country. In his career, Hilton has returned four kickoffs for touchdown, including one in 2009 against eventual BCS National Champion Alabama, and has averaged 26.5 yards per kick return.

Last December, playing on national television, Hilton wowed the football world with his performance in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, leading FIU to a 34-32 victory. In the game, Hilton caught one touchdown and scored another on an 89-yard kickoff return. However, the biggest play of the game was a 4th-and-17 play in which Hilton was on the back-end of a “Hook and Ladder,” tip-toeing his way down the sideline to pick up the first down and keep FIU in the game.

A former Freshman All-American, Hilton is already FIU’s all-time leader in all-purpose yards with 6,153. Last season, Hilton led the Panthers with 59 catches for 848 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran for 282 yards and four scores. Perhaps the biggest game of his career came against ULM on Nov. 6, when he amassed 291 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns, two on receptions, one rushing and one on a kick return.

WALTER CAMP NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Playing in front of a national ESPN audience, Hilton showed the world why he’s con-sidered one of the most dangerous players in the country as he torched the Louisville Cardinals for an FIU-record 201 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns. After a quiet first quarter, Hilton struck seemingly out of nowhere when he caught a pass on a slant route and darted past the entire Cardinal defense for a 74-yard touchdown. On FIU’s next possession, with the Panthers facing third-and-long, Hilton split the Louisville defense and caught a pass over the middle before out-running both safeties into the endzone for an 83-yard score. The two touchdowns are the third and fourth longest receiving scores in FIU history. At the end of the day, despite Louisville head coach Charlie Strong em-phasizing the importance of stopping Hilton, FIU’s Heisman hopeful had 268 all-purpose yards, giving him 551 through two contests.

SUN BELT PLAYER OF THE WEEK... TWICE

Hilton was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week for each of the first two weeks of the season. Through two contests, both FIU victories, Hilton has 14 catches for 333 yards and three scores. T.Y. has also racked up 159 yards on kick returns. 49 rushing and 10 on punt returns to give him 551 all-purpose yards, which ranks second

MR. DO-IT-ALL - In 2008, T.Y. Hilton became the only player in over a decade to score a TD in five different ways (Reception, Pass, Rush, Kick Return and Punt Return). The first time Hilton touched the ball in his freshman year at Kansas (8/30/08), he returned a punt 74 yards for a TD. He returned a kick off 90 yards for a TD at Louisiana (11/1/08) and he threw for a TD against Arkansas State (11/8/08). He then rushed for a TD against FAU (11/29/09). He also had seven receptions for TD.

HILTON HEAVE - Maybe his best game or moment as a Panther came on what is now called the “Hilton Heave”, when T.Y. set a new school record with 199 receiving yards and recorded his fourth-straight game of 200-plus all-purpose yards against Arkansas State. But the Coup De Gras for Hilton against the Red Wolves was his 38-yard touchdown pass that clinched a 22-21 FIU victory. Afterwards, he not only earned Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week accolades, but he also was given an ESPN.com Helmet Sticker.
