New Email System for FIU Retirees We are pleased to announce that beginning this semester, FIU retirees will have access to a new and more powerful e-mail solution: PantherMail. This e-mail system, powered by Google software and hardware, is the same system enjoyed by current FIU students and FIU alumni. The following are just some of the functions and features FIU retirees will be able to take advantage of with PantherMail:
over 7 Gigabytes of storage, ability to create and manage their own calendar and address book, access to e-mail from a mobile phone, and access to secure chat functionality, Google Docs, and a suite of other Google applications.
We are happy to offer this new extended service to all FIU retirees as we continue to better serve the needs of the FIU community. If you are a re-tiree and have any questions regarding this e-mail transition, please con-tact the UTS Support Center by calling 305.348.2284.

Keep FIU a no Phishing Zone
FIU e-mail users are a prime target for Phishing attacks because of the high volume of email traffic in the Univer-sity. In fact, out of the 1.5 million e-mails coming into the FIU network daily, ap-proximately 70% is SPAM. Most SPAM e-mails go di-rectly into Junk Mail, but there are some that always manage to get by. For this reason, we would like to provide you with some helpful information that will protect you from Phishing attacks. See the tips below: Never give out or confirm
personal information through e-mail. Never click a hyperlink in a strange e-mail (instead, type the Web address in your browser). Know the companies you do business with. If you get an e-mail from PayPal, but you don’t have a PayPal ac-count, chances are it’s a Phish.
One thing to note is: you can’t always tell whether an e-mail is legitimate or a Phish, however, you can trust that FIU/UTS will NEVER ask for personal or confiden-tial information (such as passwords, date of birth, or SSNs) via e-mail.

C.I.A.R.A. Joins Forces with CiscoWave
Florida LambdaRail (FLR) joined forces with
CiscoWave (C-Wave), UltraLight/PLaNetS
and AtlanticWave (A- Wave) for the Super
Computing 2008 event to enable Brazil’s
Compact Moun Solenoid (CMS) distributed
Tier2 facility to participate in the band-
width challenge competition. CiscoWave
made it possible for A-Wave and its con-
nectors from Brazil - the Academic Network
of São Paulo (ANSP), the national research
and education network of Brazil (RNP), the
SouthernLight GOLE in São Paulo and the
Tier2 facilities in São Paulo (SPRACE) as well
as the Tier2 facility in Rio de Janeiro
(HEPGRID) - to access the Super Computing
2008 (SC08) venue in Austin, Texas.
CiscoWave, a project developed in partner-
ship with National LambdaRail (NLR) and its
regional members, Cisco and the broader
R&E community, helps to promote and
enable collaborative projects within the
R&E community, including experimental
networking research, development and
testing of innovative network services, and
early deployment of advanced applications.
A-Wave interconnected with the C-Wave in
Jacksonville, Florida, through a 10 Gigabit
lambda from Miami to Jacksonville over
FLR's optical backbone combined with a
temporary 10 Gigabit Ethernet connection
on the UltraLight/PLaNetS project switch of
the California Institute of Technology
(Caltech). C-Wave provided a layer2 service
from Jacksonville to Austin, Texas, by
which A-Wave accessed the SC08 show
floor, and then extended the layer2 ser-
vices to Brazil, using the WHREN-LILA pro-
ject international research network con-
nection link, which is connected to the Bra-
zilian research networks ANSP and RNP
through the SouthernLight GOLE in São
Paulo. As a result, Brazil has emerged as a
significant member of the CMS high-energy
physics experiment at CERN – the Euro-
pean Organization for Nuclear Research. For more information on CIARA visit ciara.fiu.edu.
We offer online support through Panther Chat! In the first week of Spring term ‘09 we provided great customer service to over 350 Panther Chat users.
The Financials upgrade will maximize system functionality, improve business processes and add new features that will help serve faculty, staff and students more effectively and efficiently. There will be ongoing communication on project status updates and both testing and training information to various constituents of the University, including all FIU employees who use the system as an essential tool for daily operations, finan-cial management, and management reporting. The go-live date for the Financials upgrade and Grants Suite implementation is July 2009.
We encourage everyone to periodically visit the project website at panthersoft.fiu.edu/financials where you can find updates on the latest developments, as well as training and who to contact for support.

Training is offered in a variety of formats, such as:
Instructor-led training. Instructor-led workshops are presented in convenient one- or two- hour sessions. These hands-on workshops are delivered in a com-puter training lab by expert instructors and provide both meaningful interac-tion and individual assistance.
Online training. Online training, in the form of online tutorials, allows employees to learn new skills with out leaving their desk. All of the Campus Edition 6 workshops are offered fully online for the convenience of the instructional community. FIUmail training is also available via online tutorials and quick ref-erence guides at uts.fiu.edu/FIUmail. Additional online tutorials are in the de-velopment phase.
Custom training. Customized workshops target specific software, topics and/or skills to enhance a department’s individual work processes and the learning needs of its employees. Custom workshops can be delivered in the UTS Train-ing Center or in a computer lab convenient for the faculty, staff, and adminis-trators in the department. A minimum of six attendees is required for a cus-tom workshop.

We are pleased to announce that UTS is in the process of upgrading its online service request system to a newer version set to launch this Spring! The new version will be much faster, more reliable and more user-friendly than the system currently available.
Although there is a considerable amount of work occurring in the background, this transition will be seamless to the end-user . However, the overall look and feel will be completely different. UTS will offer training sessions designed to help users become acquainted with the enhanced features of the upgraded online service request system. Please visit the UTS website for more information on this upgrade.
