Movement & Physical Activity: Sub-Strand Curriculum - Content Descriptions Pedagogy – Examples of how students may meet these content descriptions:

Moving the body

Level 6: Practise specialised movement skills and apply them in different movement situations in indoor, outdoor and aquatic settings (VCHPEM115) Level 8: Use feedback to improve body control and coordination when performing specialised movement skills (VCHPEM133)

• Students will use fundamental movement skills (e.g. jumping, hopping, leaping) to perform exercises. • Students will perform exercises that involve basic functional body movement. Students will learn the basic

upper body, lower body and core movements. • Students will use kinaesthetic feedback when learning and coordinating bodyweight movements. • Students will be taught how to improve their technique. For example, students will know how to squat

safely by putting weight through their heels, their bottom back and knees behind their feet. • Students will learn how to incorporate correct postural positioning techniques while performing

movements. • Students will practice functional movements with regressions, and progressions for those that have the

ability for an advanced option.

Understanding movement

Level 6: Participate in physical activities designed to enhance fitness, and discuss the impact of regular participation on health and wellbeing (VCHPEM118) Level 8: Participate in physical activities that develop health-related and skill-related fitness components, and create and monitor personal fitness plans (VCHPEM136)

• Students will participate in various movements designed to improve health-related fitness components such as cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, muscular endurance and strength, and skill-related fitness components such as power, agility and coordination.

• Students will participate in warm up exercises that cover all major muscle groups (e.g. quadriceps, hamstrings, back, shoulders, glutes and chest).

• Students will participate in warm up exercises through stretching, activating and mobility movements. • Students will be taught the correct technique for a variety of exercises including squats, lunges, push ups,

dips, walkouts, shoulder taps, mountain climbers and plank. • Students will participate in a full bootcamp class, following instruction by a trainer. • Students will understand the benefit of regular participation in fitness activities on their health and

wellbeing.

Learning through movement

Level 6: Apply critical and creative thinking processes in order to generate and assess solutions to movement challenges (VCHPEM121) Level 8: Evaluate and justify reasons for decisions and choices of action when solving movement challenges (VCHPEM140)

• Students will be required to persist and successfully perform new and challenging exercises. These may include variation exercises; walkout to push up, sit to tuck, burpee and side lunge.

• Students may find a variety of the movements new and challenging, therefore be required to focus on their technique and key teaching points from the instructor.

• Students will learn how to structure a bootcamp class (a detailed pattern of exercises) and how it can be a useful training tool.

• Students will learn how to combine movements with functional exercises. • Students will be asked to evaluate and justify the strategies they used to complete different movements. • Students will have the opportunity to learn a variety of skills and training methods with the potential to run

their own bootcamp. • Students will learn how to provide exercises in a circuit-based format; including warm up, session and cool

down.

Being healthy, safe and active

Level 6: Plan and practise strategies to promote health, safety and wellbeing (VCHPEP108) Level 8: Investigate and select strategies to promote health, safety and wellbeing (VCHPEP126)

• Students will have the opportunity to learn a variety of functional body movements that they can select to perform safely at home.

• Students will be taught the importance of training within a safe environment and to their ability. • Students will learn and understand that they don’t necessarily need weights to increase strength; their

body weight is a great starting point. • Students will learn why specific exercises are important for daily life and also what it is we want to achieve

by doing them. For example, we squat to build strength in our legs and glutes, as this helps us with daily activities such as walking, riding, sitting and standing.

• Students will be able to articulate the health benefits of fitness training and the risks associated with incorrect training.

• Students will be asked to propose opportunities to increase their fitness at home or in their local community to continue the benefits to their health and wellbeing.
