Painting With A Twist is filled with happy, bold colors, and the ambience lends itself to creativity.

“We like to think of ‘The Twist’ as being the fun factor,” says Lauren Herrmann, owner of the new studio in Fishers.

Herrmann is inspired by her mother, Karlene, who is an artist. "My mother is always painting, and it has an obvious influence here,” smiles Herrmann.

Continuing the family tradition, Hermann paints with her 6-year-old daughter. Herrmann believes painting builds connections among families and friends alike which is truly what inspired her to open Painting With A Twist.

The fun starts at the door as guests are greeted by bold portraits, one of which is Herrmann’s dog, Owen Wilson, a Catahoula Cur. Herrmann laughs, "The name originated with the rescue family. It’s so funny that we had to keep it!”

Inspired by the dog, Painting With A Twist offers pet portrait classes. This challenging class is made easy with a canvas pre-sketched from a digital image of a pet by a talented staff artist who then walks you through painting the sketch step by step.

The variety of class options offered by Painting With A Twist include a monthly event called ‘Painting With A Purpose.’ Fifty

percent of the profits go to a local charity or cause.

Business team-building events, date night, girl’s night out and kids parties are guaranteed to have a fun experience. Come into the studio and see Owen Wilson firsthand, meet a professional artist, witness the brightly colored walls covered in beautiful artwork and the festive stage and create your own unique artistic expression on canvas under the thoughtful guidance of a professional artist.

“All of our artists are working artists, producing their own works and preparing for exhibitions, and some are teaching at the college level,” shares Herrmann. “They’re also working here because this is a social and fun outlet for them where they are supported. Their business cards are here, their artwork hangs on the walls and I support them 100%!”

The kids classes are among the most popular with families. "You’re not just buying a painting; you’re buying a developmental experience,” says Herrmann. “Kids get a boost of self-esteem from this!”

“Something just happens. Suddenly this lightness and silliness comes out. The guys, kids, ladies, business groups, everybody laughs here. It’s just really fun to watch and experience,” explains Herrmann.

It has been nearly a year since the Carmel and Fishers Chambers of Commerce officially merged into OneZone. I sat with Mo Merhoff and Dan Canan to discuss the goals for OneZone going into the first full calendar year as a united front and what the terrain looks like for their organization after they have cleared the obstacles and hurdles of the merger process.

“Our three main goals were to set a 5 percent growth goal for our first 10 months together,” said Mo Merhoff, OneZone President. “We officially came together as OneZone on February 20, 2015. We set a 10-month budget. We set our member retention objective at over 80 percent. Our third goal was to maintain our event quality and attendance.” Towards the end of the 2015 calendar year, OneZone was well within range to meet their objectives and were at 98 percent of their membership goal. Updated figures will be available after the New Year.

“There was a lot of planning prior to the announcement that there would be a merger,” emphasized Dan Canan, Executive Vice President. “It was nearly two years worth of time put in by

the board and the staff. We wanted to make sure that we had all of the critical assistance in place, so that when we announced the merger, the challenges would be minimized. The transition has gone smoothly, and absolutely without question, we believe that the merger was the right thing to do and was the best value proposition for our members.”

“When we merged, one of the concerns was that each community would have its own group representing business issues,” expressed Merhoff. “These groups would deal with those issues and have boots on the ground, representing our members in their respective communities. For instance, if a business in either community or in a particular development is having issues with signage or is dealing with a department in its respective city, OneZone is there to advocate on their behalf.

“When the two chambers merged, we agreed to make certain that we keep those resources available and actions happening. The Business Issues committee assists members located in Carmel, and the Fishers Advocacy Council assists those located in Fishers. These groups develop agendas and business-friendly ideas relative to

their respective communities. We are enthusiastic that this year in Carmel, some of the issues that we’ve had on our list for the better part of 10 years are looking to have some legs on them.”

Merhoff spoke specifically about a current protocol in which individuals have only 48 hours to respond prior to a public meeting. “We are pushing for more than two business days before the meeting to respond,” Merhoff said. “Our logic is that if you’re a business and are concerned about something that is coming up on the docket, you need more than 48 hours to respond to that issue.

“The other issue that we are addressing are time limits at public meetings. If you are there representing your business project and are accompanied by your architect, construction manager, your attorney and designer, all of whom are paid by the hour, and have been sitting for two hours of unabated discussion or public commentary, that poses an issue. Most institutions, including the Supreme Court, impose time limits.

“We are also working with the Department of Community Services on some potential changes in zoning in certain parts of the city. We are also pushing for streamlining the process for any new business idea or new development to go from conception to completion as expeditiously as possible. Currently, the process can be somewhat laborious.”

Regardless of the zip codes, OneZone is focused on issues that pertain to businesses, issues that are important to their members and are dedicated to working with each respective city council on resolving these important issues.

In addition to working with the local representatives, OneZone participates in legislative breakfasts at which members can engage in discussions with state legislators about items and issues that are important to the

business communities. A area of focus for 2016 is about the workforce in Hamilton County.

“One of the things affecting all of us in Hamilton County is making sure we have available staff to accomplish our business goals,” Merhoff said. “This is a concern for not just the large corporations but also for firms and small businesses. We will be centering an upcoming April luncheon around the topic and the challenges of the workforce.”

A major goal for OneZone this year is to strengthen their relationships with state legislators and state representatives. Having a strong voice and presence at the state level will assist OneZone with their advocacy efforts on topics of concern to businesses in Carmel and Fishers.

Long-term funding for transportation, a continued push for equitable educational funding for high performing schools and a longer-term solution to the discrimination challenge are high priority

issues that OneZone intends to address at the state level.

“We want to make sure that we are always advocating on behalf of business interests,” Merhoff stated. “We want a stronger voice for the 1,300+ business entities that we are representing.”

As part of this initiative to engage the state legislature, Dan Canan has created a new committee to the OneZone organization, the Advocacy Committee. This group will deal with topics related to infrastructure, funding, education and other business-oriented issues. Canan will roll out this committee and have the members in place by the first quarter of this year.

“The idea came from surveying our members and discussions with our two mayors, Mayor Fadness and Mayor Brainard,” Canan explained. “Prior to the merger, the Fishers Chamber and the Carmel Chamber both had pretty well

established advocacy committees on local issues respective to Fishers and Carmel. However, the merger is giving us the opportunity now to get out there on a state level and champion issues that are important to our members and our communities with our state legislatures and state representatives. That was the purpose of starting this committee.

“We are establishing what this committee will look like, identifying our issues and devising how we can be a strong voice for our members at the state legislature. Our committee will consist of a couple board members and members that represent and give diversity to the committee. We’ll be announcing the members and rolling out our agenda after the first part of the year,” said Canan.

Merhoff concluded, “Now that we have completed our first 10 months and are entering our first full calendar year, we are looking forward to what we can build together as OneZone.”

In 2007, Carolyn saw a need to tutor international adults in English and help them get acclimated to their new surroundings. Garrett Clark ranks 11th out of 20,000 in the teen division of CrossFit worldwide. The CrossFit Games invited the top 10 this year to participate. Clark’s hope is to qualify for the CrossFit Games which are held in August.

“That’s the goal,” says Clark, 17 years old and a junior at Fishers High School.

While the CrossFit games may seem intimidating to most, the CrossFit workout is accommodating to any fitness level. With a focus on improving overall fitness conditioning, CrossFit workouts are matched to a participant’s current fitness level and adjusted regularly for a variety in a workout.

“We use a combination of mono structural (running, rowing, biking, jump rope), gymnastics (pull-ups, pushups, dips, air squats – body weight moves) and weight lifting,” shares Three Kings CrossFit owner Bryn Jafri. “We combine these fitness elements to create a strength and conditioning program.”

Jafri explains that a general class involves a dynamic warm up, review of the skills and lifts, and then the workout is performed in a class setting.

The age range of participants is vast. More and more teens and younger are finding their way into the gyms to gain strength and endurance. Clark was drawn to CrossFit for additional training while playing soccer when he was younger.

“I started working out at home doing CrossFit when I was 11 or 12 years old,” shares Clark. “It was about the time I started high school that I got serious about CrossFit and began competing.”

Garrett transitioned from soccer to competitions with CrossFit. At the time he started competing, there were age groups but not an actual teen division. Based on demand, CrossFit added the Teen Division in 2015.

Garrett was drawn to CrossFit because he found it more fun than regular gym workouts. “I saw people getting stronger than I had witnessed with other means of strength training,” says Garrett.

Garrett’s parents, Melissa and Brad, became CrossFit devotees six years ago, creating a gym in their basement. “We are both former athletes, and exercise has always been a part of our lives,” shares mom, Melissa, who was a soccer player and ran track. Brad Clark

was a football player, and their daughter, Maryna, plays D1 soccer at IUPUI.

“It is definitely a family thing,” says Brad of his family’s CrossFit workouts.

Garrett started competing two summers ago. He excelled in the competitions and is sponsored by Born Primitive, a clothing company geared towards CrossFit athletes. Born Primitive’s founder is a Navy Seal.

Jafri, who has experience training U.S. Special Forces in Europe, says that he was drawn to CrossFit while training servicemen overseas. “I was asked about CrossFit and its application as one of the workouts for our Special Forces, so we experimented with it overseas,” says Jafri, who also notes that there are a lot of CrossFit boxes (their term for “gyms”) around the world on U.S. military bases.

Garrett, who wishes to study sports medicine in college, hopes to continue his CrossFit competitions and has followed the NCAA rules of eligibility. The nature of CrossFit cultivates rowers because that is a major cardio portion of the workout, so there are possibilities outside of the CrossFit world of competitions.

For more information on CrossFit, please visit CrossFit.com or ThreeKingsCrossFit.com. For Born Primitive, visit BornPrimitive.com for additional information on their sponsored athletes including Garrett Clark.

TED ALLEN: CARMEL’S CLAIM TO CULINARY FAMEWriter / Janelle Morrison

Indy is starting the New Year off with a culinary bang. In just a couple weeks, the Indiana State Fairgrounds will host The Fantastic Food Fest January 16-17. Select vendors, wineries, breweries and restaurants will be featuring their fare and performing cooking demonstrations. Carmel’s own culinary celebrity Ted Allen along with another famed food television personality Hugh Acheson will be in town for this interactive experience for the hard-core foodies.

Allen, a 1983 Carmel High School graduate and member of the CHS Alumni Hall of Fame, doesn’t get back to his hometown too often, though his mother is a resident of Carmel near the high school where he was raised. He has been a guest speaker at a few local special events over the years. He spoke at the “Creme de la Carmel Fundraiser,” an art exhibit and silent auction that benefited the Carmel Clay Public Library in 2012. When approached with the opportunity to be one of the festival’s headliners, he “jumped at the chance to come home.”

Prior to his most recent success as host of Food Network’s “Chopped” and as a published author of two cookbooks, “The Food You Want To Eat: 100 Smart, Simple Recipes” and “In My Kitchen: 100 Recipes and Discoveries for Passionate Cooks,” Allen earned a degree in psychology at Purdue University, although he had a passion for journalism.

His first job was as a sports writer for the Lafayette Courier Journal. He enrolled at New York University where he completed his master’s degree in journalism. Allen moved to Chicago where he was eventually offered a position as a reporter for a Chicago-based newspaper. He became a member of the locally renowned group of restaurant critics known as the “Famished Four.”

Allen has also been a contributing writer for Esquire Magazine, contributing articles on the delectable delights in the food and wine world. Allen also received the James Beard Media Award in May 2012 for his work as the host of Chopped, and the show itself also won for best in-studio television program.

His introduction into the world of network television shows and reality TV began with a role on the Bravo TV series “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” and has appeared on several hit shows since such as “Uncorked: Wine Made Simple” and “Top Chef.” He expressed that his early passion for research and writing plays a role in his current projects and that every job has contributed to where he is today.

“Every job that I have ever had is essential to what I do today,” Allen said. “You have to be open to weird opportunities. It is very exciting to do TV. You have to reach a very large audience, and you get paid well.” In his spare time, he enjoys spending a Sunday afternoon with a bottle of wine, a group of his close friends and cooking in the kitchen.

When asked about the current trends that he sees prevalent in the culinary world today, Allen responded, “There is a trend in good cooking that is not confined to metropolitan areas like New York City or San Francisco. You can get a great organic burger in more local places, like Noblesville, Indiana. I can remember when it was difficult to find quality ingredients and even olive oil in this area. Now local places like Joe’s Butcher Shop offer grass-fed beef.”

Festival-goers can enjoy the ambiance and entertainment, provided in part by Allen and Acheson at the Fantastic Food Fest, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. The festival is sponsored by Indiana Grown, the Indiana State Department of Agriculture’s “buy local” initiative. Tickets cost $15 each. Visit fantasticfoodfest.com or call 317-708-4401.

Billie Dragoo and Deborah Collins Stephens created the Indiana Conference for Women (ICW) to create a platform for women to connect, engage, discover, get inspired and innovate.

Dragoo was named one of the top 10 women entrepreneurs in our nation by Fortune Magazine. She was a winner of the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur’s Award, former national Chairwoman and CEO of NAWBO and her firm Repucare was recently cited as one of the fastest growing in the nation.

Collins Stephens is a best-selling author of six books. As an executive coach and leadership development expert, she has worked with CEOs and entrepreneurs across the nation.

It was their vision that brought this conference to life four years ago.

The list of speakers is a “Who’s Who” of national and state leaders, business owners, authors and top executives who shared their stories and experiences. Here are comments and quotes overheard at the event:

Leadership Lessons presented by Dragoo and Collins Stephens: “To be outstanding, get comfortable with being uncomfortable.”

“Your life is your message to the world. Make sure it’s inspiring.”

“Only dead fish go with the flow! You don’t get into something to test the waters; you go into things to make waves!”

“Worrying is literally betting against yourself.”

“Don’t wait for opportunity to find you. Go out and create it!”

“Seek to be worth knowing rather than being well known.”

Master of Ceremonies Gerry Dick says, “The Indiana Conference for Women has become one of those rare events that both empowers and inspires. It is an extraordinary experience.”

“It’s all about women supporting women,” says WTHR13 Anchor Andrea Morehead.

Sallie Krawcheck, Founder of Ellevest and former Wall Street Analyst, says she has interrupted a lot of group discussions by walking into a room filled mostly with men, and “never once was I told that I’d interrupted a conversation of how they could increase diversity within the company.”

“Cummins relies on innovation,” says Melina Kennedy, GM of Global Rail and Defense for Cummins. “We achieve this successfully because of the diversity in our company.”

“Girl, you’ve been given gifts. Use them. You will fall on your face, but you will get back up,” said Beth Brooke-Marciniak’s father to her as a young girl. “Take your success and figure out how you can positively impact the world with these gifts.”

Krawcheck’s father said to her when she was in third grade and feeling awkward, “You are pretty. Look at Gloria Steinem. She has glasses. She’s pretty, and she is changing the world.”

Keynote speaker Kathy Ireland, CEO and Chief Designer of Kathy Ireland Worldwide, was 40 years old when she learned that “No.”

is a complete sentence. Ireland says, “Our failures should not define us, but neither should our successes.”

“Crises come up,” says Ireland. “You don’t break down. You break through.”

The day included the Dolphin Tank where six female startup companies pitched their business. Advice: branding is critical. You must have a compelling story.

“We are all dolphins in this room. Dolphins work in a gam which is their family and are sensitive to other species in trouble,” shared Dolphin Tank moderator Amy Millman, CEO of Springboard Enterprises.

Aimee Kandrac, Founder of What Friends Do, who pitched in the 2014 Dolphin Tank, says, “The connections, advice and confidence I gained from the safe pitching environment like the Dolphin Tank allowed me to secure $500,000 in funding and gain experience to share with the next generation of female entrepreneurs.”

“You can’t make change if you are not at the table,” says Brooke-Marciniak, Global Vice Chair of Public Policy for Ernst & Young. “So be courageous enough not to be removed from the table.”

It’s time to Lean In.

Olivet Nazarene University Indianapolis Regional Center7302 Woodland Dr.Indianapolis, IN 46278877.9.OLIVETgraduate.olivet.edu

OLIVET NAZARENE UNIVERSITY OPENSNORTHSIDE LOCATION

One of the nation’s oldest top Christian universities, Olivet Nazarene University (ONU)

has opened its first site on the northside of Indianapolis. Their 17,000 square-foot building offers on-site classrooms and lab rooms that accommodate 15-20 students and houses eight full-time staff members.

ONU’s programs build on the students’ experiences and education. The university has strived to provide education with a Christian purpose since 1907. With more than 30 programs offered online and in over 100 different locations throughout Illinois, Indiana and Michigan, the School of Graduate

and Continuing Studies offers programs that “meet you where you are.”

“This is the first out-of-state site for Olivet,” stated Carrie Dilley, Executive Director of Marketing and Communications. “Our main campus was established and is located in Bourbonnais, Illinois. We have since opened sites in Michigan as well.

“In addition to our academic programs, one piece that we focus on and promote is our customer service. Our students can come in at any point in their career or education level, and we can help them achieve their goals. We have a student success team that assists them

from admission all the way through until graduation. We also have a financial solutions team that helps students find the best option in paying for school.”

Students will not only develop sound professional skills, but also an ethical perspective for applying them. ONU understands the time demands on their students’ schedules and the effort required by their job. The university differentiates themselves from other online universities with their accelerated programs that meet online or on campus only one night per week and are completed in less than two years. That, coupled with affordable tuition,

Page 23: Fishers Magazine January 2016

TOWNEPOST NETWORK / JANUARY 2016 / TownePost.com

provides value that is seldom equaled in today’s education market.

ONU offers business programs – designed to meet you where you are – at the associate, bachelor and master’s levels.

“We will be offering an inaugural MBA in February 2016,” explained Cati Lingle, Director of Educational Partnerships. “Students whose employers are part of our academic partnership will receive not only a 20% tuition discount but will also be able to register for their first course for free. We are waiving the fee for this February 29, 2016, rollout. If the students work for a company that doesn’t offer the partnership, there are other ways to qualify for tuition discounts. We are affiliated with several associations. For example, if the students are members of a nursing association that we have a relationship with, they are eligible for tuition discounts.”

ONU has entered an articulation agreement with Ivy Tech which offers Ivy Tech students, employees and alumni eligibility to receive ONU tuition discounts for programs offered through the Indianapolis location.

Other programs offered through ONU such as their Criminal Justice program provides an opportunity for professionals serving within the Criminal Justice career fields of law enforcement, probation, parole and corrections to remain employed while completing the online Criminal Justice degree requirements. Professionals seeking competitive advantage in the efforts to retain their positions and secure promotions have opportunity to better understand their field of occupation and seek to better their profession.

ONU emphasizes that anyone who is in the nursing profession has the power to help people heal while fulfilling the potential within oneself. Through ONU’s School of Graduate and Continuing Studies, the Nursing programs are designed to provide the skills and knowledge to help nurses do just that.

ONU’s School of Graduate and Continuing Studies is committed to providing the kind of education and skill development necessary to meet the demands of today’s educational environment. Their programs are relevant, current and accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. ONU provides master’s degree and certificate programs in several areas to help existing teachers sharpen their skills and advance their careers.

This university also offers an online Master of Engineering Management (MEM) degree, a technical alternative to the traditional MBA, that prepares graduates for careers managing systems, processes, procedures, organizations and business.

“We are now offering a dual admissions initiative through our ‘Pursue ONU’ initiative,” stated Jen Owen, Associate Director of Marketing stated. “It gives students the opportunity to be simultaneously admitted to Olivet Nazarene University and a participating community college. The goal is to create a seamless and successful transition to transfer students intending to complete their baccalaureate degree at ONU.”

SWIMMING THE ROAD TO STATE

Writer & Photographer / Keeley Miller

The HSE girls swimming team is the best that it has been in years. At least that is what Coach Andy Pedersen says as the team heads into the 2015-16 season. And with multiple elite athletes leading the top-ranked team, this statement is heavily supported by an outstanding senior class, including Allie Barnes, Lauren Blanchard and Kylie Sutherlin.

All three seniors are state-ranked, incredibly competitive swimmers with over a decade of experience despite being in high school. Overcoming injuries and other obstacles to take titles and awards throughout their past seasons, the three girls plan to lead the team to the state podium.

“This group of seniors is pretty amazing because they all exhibit different attributes that can help enhance our team,” said Pedersen. “Kylie is a primetime performer with a very business-like approach – she sets a tough and gritty example in a way her teammates can relate to. Lauren is very coachable and able to readily make adjustments during competition, plus she consistently does a really good job watching out for her teammates. Allie has top notch practice habits – she is always a leader at workout while also being an outstanding racer at big meets.”

Beginning at only 6 or 7 years old, the swimmers began to excel at the sport in local neighborhood teams.

“I played every sport known to man, and I started swimming when I was about 6,” said Blanchard. “I just swam for the neighborhood team until I was about 10. My dad used to swim, and he liked the sport and so did I. I just stuck with it.”

Now Blanchard is competing for the top spot on the team and the podium at state.

“I was out pretty much all of the season last year because of an injury but was still able to make it to Sectionals,” Blanchard said. “Even though I just got back, I placed third at Sectionals and 17th at State.”But Blanchard was not the only one who overcame an injury. Senior Sutherlin has tackled injuries through her entire high school career, including a stress fracture, surgery and a concussion.

“My family has helped me so much throughout my swimming career, especially my brother who has been my biggest fan and number one supporter,” said Sutherlin. “I think that my favorite part of swimming is the family aspect of the team. We all support each other and are really close, so it is like having a second family.”

While competing for top spots in the state, the team also competes for top spots academically. While balancing 10

practices a week including practices before school starting at 5:30 a.m., the girls also take rigorous classes including honors and college level courses.

“Balancing school and swimming is definitely hard. In season, I have to work ahead when I can and utilize every free moment of the school day getting work done,” Barnes said. “I’ve learned to understand that in season, I have to sacrifice a lot to swim and get good

grades, but it’s worth it.”

With all the time spent with each other at practices and meets, the girls have bonded to become more than just teammates.

“I like that I get to be with my best friends,” said Barnes. “It is not just a best friend that you hang out with; it is a best friend that makes me better every day.”

Hoping to place top three in the state championship, the girls team is preparing for one of their best seasons yet. And they’re just getting started.

“This group of senior ladies has accomplished a great deal in their first three years with our program,” said Pedersen. “However, this year, their goal is to win a ring at the IHSAA State Championships, and in order to do that, they will need to top all previous efforts.”

“BALANCING SCHOOL AND SWIMMING IS DEFINITELY HARD. IN SEASON, I

HAVE TO WORK AHEAD WHEN I CAN AND UTILIZE EVERY FREE MOMENT OF

THE SCHOOL DAY GETTING WORK DONE. I’VE LEARNED TO UNDERSTAND THAT IN SEASON, I HAVE TO SACRIFICE A LOT

TO SWIM AND GET GOOD GRADES, BUT IT’S WORTH IT.”

BLACK AND BLUE BASH RAISES $20,000On November 14, the Royals Varsity Club (RVC) hosted an annual fundraiser, the Black and Blue Bash, to benefit Hamilton Southeastern’s athletic department. Selling over 200 tickets, the event helped to raise about $20,000.

A huge success, the Black and Blue Bash provided a fun-filled night with raffles and food while recognizing all HSE sports. The fundraiser will help to provide HSE athletes with equipment, scholarships, updated training and weight rooms and portable AEDs.

The RVC would like to thank their sponsors: Eye 4 Group, Fishers Magazine, Mascot Monthly, Monarch Beverage, Sam’s Club/96th Street and Total Restoration General Contractors Inc. They would also like to thank everyone who attended as well as the planning committee: Karla Clement, Tim Cullen, Alba Jessop, Kathy Kleinrichert, Carol McCormack, Tina Mudd, Mary Kate Myers, Nicole Scherer and Amanda Simone.

ROYAL VARSITY CLUB (RVC)The Royals Varsity Club (RVC) is comprised of parents, community members, athletes, coaches, faculty, staff and HSE alumni dedicated to the support, encouragement and advancement of the athletic programs at Hamilton Southeastern High School. RVC directly assists HSE athletes, coaches and booster clubs. Membership is open to all.

RVC is funded by annual memberships and proceeds from RVC fundraising events. RVC is committed to filling the gaps between student athlete and athletic department needs and school corporation budgets. Increasing school district budget cuts will make RVC’s support even more vital.

SCHOLARSHIP ATHLETE OF THE

MONTH

BAILEE PAUL

As a varsity cheerleader, junior Bailee Paul has experienced criticism since she first began her sport. Paul played varsity all three years of high school as she first started when she was 5 at Indiana Elite. From that point forward, Paul was hooked.

“I love my team and the sport,” said Paul. “It is something different that has many things that keep me cheering.”

Regardless of her progress, though, Paul still faced the common stereotype that cheerleading was not a sport. She conditioned at every practice with a minimum of 30 minutes per workout which included running and weightlifting. Still, people told her it was not a sport.

“We work as hard, if not harder, than the other sports,” said Paul. “We compete and practice, and we’re out there just as much time as they are doing the exact same stuff. Games can be very frustrating because we want [the boys] to win as much as they do, so it gets kind of frustrating sometimes. You are sweating,

Both senior wrestlers Austin Holmes and Spencer Irick have worked for years to be where they are. Competing for the number one position in the state, the athletes plan to finish their last year on top before attending Indiana University to further their wrestling careers.

“I started wrestling when I was about 11 years old,” said Holmes. “I saw a dual meet between Iowa and Indiana University on the Big Ten Network, and at that point, I decided that I wanted to try wrestling. I also decided I would eventually wrestle for IU because I soon realized that my dreams of playing middle linebacker for IU would probably not come true.”

Holmes and Irick are both state-ranked athletes with numerous titles and accomplishments, including Holmes’ win in the state’s most difficult tournament and Irick’s Academic All-State title. But for the athletes, these accomplishments came with years of

hard work and dedication.

“The most difficult aspect of being a wrestler is the rigorous practice schedule and time management,” said Irick. “Everyday, I am pushed to the point of exhaustion, but in order to be the best, you have to work the hardest. Practices are every day lasting around 2-3 hours, and I have to manage my time wisely to succeed on the mat and in the classroom.”

As for the future, both seniors are signed to Indiana University for wrestling. But for now, they are focused on State.

“I don’t set my goals anymore; I just put the expectation in my head that I will win my next match,” said Holmes. “My expectations for myself are winning a State Championship and winning the NHSCA Senior Nationals this spring. I have already signed to wrestle at Indiana University next fall, and I would like to win as many opens as possible my redshirt year. Then after that, I would like to be an NCAA All-American for IU.”

so you are getting a workout. It definitely equals out, and we should be treated the same way.”

In order to achieve equal respect, Paul made it a point to prove people wrong. She made presentations and wrote papers about the subject all in an attempt to educate people about her favorite sport.

“I’ve had speeches and papers where I defend it. I mean, I just go back at it. It’s not [considered] a big deal, but I think it should be. I think a lot of people just think of it as waving poms and trying to look cute, but that’s not true. We stunt, tumble and jump while cheering throughout the whole game.”

When game time came around for the Royal cheerleaders, so did the stress. Perfecting the moves and mastering the steps took time, so messing up during a game was a fear for the girls.

“Sometimes when it’s something little, you just clap it out and get back on track,” said Paul. “For when it’s little mistakes, we try not to make it a big deal. But when something falls, we get really frustrated with ourselves, so we hit it over and over and over in practice, and sometimes we might have to condition for that.”

Regardless of the stereotypes, what keeps the girls cheering is their dedication to one another. They spend nearly 12 hours a week together, not including games on the weekends, and respect one another as teammates.

“We are basically like family,” said Paul. “We’re all so close, it’s what we do. It doesn’t matter to us what everyone else thinks. We do it because we love it, and we have so much fun.”

In 1997, while coaching for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tony Dungy and Clyde Christensen teamed up with Mark Merrill, President and Founder of Family First. They decided to make a positive impact by hosting an event for dads and kids at the Bucs training camp. Anticipating a couple hundred participants, 4,000 showed up. Clearly they were onto something special, and All Pro Dad was born as a result. All

Pro Dad focuses on enhancing inter-family relationships. Since its inception, the All Pro Dad organization has grown exponentially.

Hoosier Darrin Gray became actively affiliated with All Pro Dad while working with the Indianapolis Star who became the first local sponsor of All Pro Dad. “I attended an event with my then 6-year-old son and signed up to receive the enewsletters,” shares Gray. “Having experienced the events as a participant,

it wasn’t long before I was volunteering, became a donor and started promoting the organization.”

The relationship between Gray and All Pro Dad solidified in 2006 when Gray was asked to produce a large All Pro Dad event which sold out. Based out of Tampa, the organization offered Gray a position knowing he would have a dynamic position of working out of his home as the other Directors live and work at the Florida office.

ALLPRODADDarrin Gray

Page 34: Fishers Magazine January 2016

34 / FISHERS MAGAZINE / JANUARY 2016 / atFishers.com

Gray’s title is Director of Corporate Partnerships, and thanks to modern technology and the nature of Gray’s job, he is able to keep a virtual office at home and stay true to the values of the organization – "family first.” Gray does travel frequently to the main office in Tampa. "Families get stronger because dads are getting better with the help of All Pro Dad,” says Gray. He keeps busy – All Pro Dad has 1,300 chapters nationwide with 102 located in Indiana.

The All Pro Dad mantra is “Give me a minute a day, hour a month and a day a year.” A minute a day to read The Play of The Day email, view their Facebook postings or watch Dungy’s Diary on their website or YouTube. An uninterrupted hour a month devoted to time spent with your child at an All Pro Dad’s Day breakfast. The one day a year is spent attending an All Pro Dad’s Father and Kids Experience at an NFL stadium. The 10th annual event locally at Lucas Oil will be the fall of 2016.

At a stadium event, the father/kids groupings are split into smaller teams and run through drills. One such example is the end zone celebration that results into an All Pro Dad hug. “As fathers, we may not have ever experienced an All Pro Dad hug, so we teach our attendees how to do it,” says Gray.First, the child receives a handoff from their

dad and runs the ball into the end zone where the child is instructed to perform a celebration dance. Next, just as in a real football game, the person who score then looks for a teammate for a congratulatory hug.

But the All Pro Dad hug is a special one. There is no “tapping” on the back as that is akin to “tapping out” and is a sign of being uncomfortable with the hug. For an All Pro Dad hug, the father and child hug, solidly,

for a count of 15 seconds. The count is slow and is actually 30 seconds. According to research, the hug must occur for at least 20 seconds for the desired connection, resulting in bonding between the father and child.

“It’s a powerful moment,” shares Gray.

The All Pro Dad website is rich with content supporting their focus of strengthening family relationships. The Colts organization has been extremely generous to All Pro Dad over the years. Local events often feature Colts players. Most recently, HSE standout and Colts starting Offensive Lineman Joe Reitz was highlighted. Quarterbacks’ Coach Clyde Christensen and alumni Hunter Smith, Ryan Diem, Dylan Gandy and David Thornton are just of few guys who support All Pro Dad’s events.

“I am forever grateful to the entire Colts organization and so many Colts players that believe in me and the charity work of Tony Dungy’s All Pro Dad program,” shares Gray, who co-authored a book with Hunter Smith, “The Jersey Effect: Beyond The World Championship.”

WELLNESS DEPT. CHAIR, HSE INT./JR. HIGHHEAD COACH, HSE BOYS LACROSSE

HOW HAS SERVING STUDENTS AS A YOUNG LIFE LEADER IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?

I thought Young Life would give me the opportunity to get to know my lacrosse players on a deeper level, and it has, but that is just the beginning. Young Life has an exceptional group of leaders that I am so grateful to call my friends.

We come from all different backgrounds and from a variety of different professions, but we bond like we’ve known each other for years. Young Life has strengthened my faith and helps keep God on the forefront of my thoughts and actions. I am so glad that I was called to be a leader.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN BEING A YOUNG LIFE LEADER IN THE LIVES OF KIDS?

Take the leap of faith! It is an amazing experience to mentor teenagers. You don’t need to have all the answers; you just need to have a heart for serving the Lord. I am constantly impressed by the number of teens that show up every week and the desire they have to know more about God’s plan in their life. Young Life has changed my life, and I am positive it can change yours too.
