Fishermans BendFuture Industry PrecinctAn opportunity to shape the future of MelbourneVision Statement 2014
In the past, industrial precincts have been places of high environmental impact and low human amenity -- strictly utilitarian and often at odds with other human activities.
In the future, industry will not only co-exist with communities, it will have to contribute to human amenity by creating vibrant places where people flourish, environmental impact is reduced to zero and businesses maintain high productivity and profitability.
An opportunity to shape the future
The world is on the cusp of the most profound reimagining of industry since the industrial revolution. Victorians have a unique opportunity to shape that future.
...It all starts at Fishermans Bend.
The Victorian Government has committed to redeveloping about half of the existing industrial/commercial area at Fisherman’s Bend for high density residential use. This creates a singular opportunity to reconstitute the remaining industrial/commercial area as a world-first Future Industry precinct.
Landmark projects such as Masdar in the UAE, Kalendborg in Denmark, Greensburg in the USA are already expanding the envelope of possibilities for technology and design for sustainability and human wellbeing.
Fishermans Bend should be the first industrial precinct in the world that not only aims for zero environmental impact, but simultaneously seeks to deeply integrate culture, social, recreational and tourism activities in a working industrial area.

What is One Planet Living?
One Planet Living is a vision for a world where its easy affordable and attractive for people everywhere to lead happy and healthy lives within a fair shares of the earths resources.
Our vision for the renewal of the Fishermans Bend Industry Precinct combines the guiding One Planet Principles with the practical appraoch to sustainability for industry called industrial ecology.
Health and happiness
making buildings more energy efficient and delivering all energy with renewable technologies
Zero waste reducing waste arisings, reusing where possible, and ultimately to send zero waste to landfill
Sustainable transport encouraging low carbon modes of transport to reduce emissions, reducing the need to travel
Sustainable materials using sustainable products that have a low embodied energy
Local and sustainable food choosing low impact, local, seasonal and organic diets and reducing food waste
Sustainable water using water more efficiently in buildings and in the products we buy; tackling local flooding and water course pollution
Land use and wildlife protecting and expanding old habitats and creating new space for wildlife
Culture and community reviving local identity and wisdom; support for, and participation in, the arts
Equity and local economy inclusive, empowering workplaces with equitable pay; support for local communities and fair trade
Zero carbon
encouraging active, sociable, meaningful lives to promote good health and well being
The ten guiding sustainability principles for Fishermans Bend:
The ten principles provide not only a practical sustainability framework for the delivery of the innovative Fishermans Bend vision, but also provide a set of guidelines and a common language for companies located in the precinct. One Planet Living is being used by the United Nations to help develop the 2015 Sustainable Development Goals that will replace the Millienium Development Goals.
A Future Industry precinct at Fishermans Bend would:
Be a world-class showcase in the heart of Melbourne for cutting-edge industrial design and integrated resource management.
Complement the existing plans for residential redevelopment of a portion of the site. Attract international
investment from companies committed to demonstrating global leadership.
Create a lasting environmental legacy for the governments and businesses involved;
Help catalyse similar efforts around Australia, and around the world.

The site would function as:
A water connection. A unique opportunity presents through a direct water link into the existing CBD that may developed as a public transport water ferry service, given it is such a short distance. It’s utilisation would reduce pressure on existing road reserves/land for transport, allowing for alternate utilization of the reserves for environmental & social benefit at a range of scales.
The Victorian Government has committed to redeveloping about half of the existing industrial/commercial area at Fishermans Bend for high density residential use. This creates a singular opportunity to reconstitute the remaining industrial/commercial area as a world-first Future Industry precinct.
A network of green spaces. Strategically link existing parks to create a precinct-wide network of ‘green streets’. This can be developed to include environmentally sustainable measures to benefit the entire precinct as a whole. Streets can be used as green corridors to link open spaces.
Integrated land use: The existing industrial area and the proposed Capital City Zone are transected by the Westgate Freeway, effectively a wide traffic barricade. The opportunity exists to integrate the two areas by punching through major streets and widening them to open up views and uses, providing greater access opportunities and integrated land-use.
A number of eco-initiatives would be incorporated in different ways across the site, retrofitting existing buildings and spaces. Examples include:Sustainable technologies would be integrated
