Overview
Important for food security, social and economic development.
About 75% of the animal protein is obtained from fish and
its products.
Employment ( est. > 3 million peoples) ( i) 1.3 million in marine
(ii) 1.4 million in inland (iii) 0.3 million in aquaculture
About 10-15 % of monthly hh expenditure for food is for fish and fishery products
Contribution to National GDP : - about 8%

Challenges in Aquaculture Development
Higher cost of feed stuff (rice bran, peanut cake, sesame cake etc.)
Genetically inbreed of rohu fish
Less aware of new species to introduce (Indigenous)
Occurrences of diseases
Less encourage and supporting for small- scale aquaculture
Less aware the value and role of Small Indigenous Fishes: -
- source of income for rural farmers
- Source of high nutrition
- Effective uses of resources
Farmers need technical assistance, financing and policy back up to extend SSA with SIS fishes
- Land uses policy
- Equity uses of irrigated water also for SSA
- Using agriculture by-products (rice bran, oil seed cake etc.) for in country aquaculture and livestock breeding
- Control in using pesticides and chemicals in agriculture

Myanmar has more than 300 species of inland fishes.
About 30 common small species are highly preferred that support daily protein intake.
DoF with the assistance of WorldFish has seeking SIS aquaculture to support national poverty alleviation program
Expecting to learn from the successful experiences in the region
Conclusion
- The government policy has been established for rural development aiming poverty reduction.
- Now, Myanmar Fisheries also has been extending R&D with WorldFish to contribute the CIP in fisheries development.
- In this context, this workshop is so timely for us to
learn the success and approach in the region on SSA and SIS aquaculture.
