FY16

CSB/SJU Education & Student Development• 4,402 recorded participation in student events this fiscal year, led by students in the Outdoor Leadership Center,

Peer Resource Program and Outdoor U naturalist staff.• The Challenge Course served over 2,000 students and community members. Peer Resource Program facilitators had

great success honing their skills at assisting groups in team-building and leadership initiatives.• Collegebound, a pre-orientation wilderness trip for incoming first-year and transfer students, has grown to nearly

100 participants, the largest group to date. Students can now choose among four options for their trip: canoeing in the Boundary Waters, rock climbing along Lake Superior, backpacking the Superior Hiking Trail, or camping at various sites along the north shore.

Community Education• 6,010 recorded participation in our community events including Maple Syrup Festivals, Tapping Day, Avon Hills

conference, Collegeville Colors and more. • Our big seasonal events - Collegeville Colors, Langlauf ski race, Maple Syrup Tapping Day and Festivals - brought in

big crowds totalling more than 2,300 people.preK-12 Education• Just over 7,500 student visits kept staff very busy, despite being significantly fewer visits than FY2016. There were

fewer weather cancellations combined with higher participation rates from the St. Cloud school district and a few new large groups.

• Our partnerships with Resource Training & Solutions, Wilderness Inquiry, the Sauk River Watershed District and others enhance the opportunities for students to experience the outdoors. Voyageur canoes gave 550 sixth graders a great experience paddling Lake Sagatagan and the Project Earth conference continues to bring more than 200 students for a full day oudoor conference on topics ranging from seeds to nature photography to orienteering.

Fundraising & Membership

We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to all of our donors. Your gifts allow us to continue our work and allow for the growth of our programs.

We look forward to continuing to improve our environmental and outdoor education with the help of new and renewing members like you.

A spike in membership from FY11-FY14 was due in part to a change in how CSB/SJU student membership are processed, which also increased the number of honorary memberships. The drop in memberships in FY15 reflects the complete turnover of students since implementing the change.

• The 2017 logging season focused on a small piece of aspen on the Hilary trail.• We celebrate the addition of 136 acres to the Abbey Arboretum.• Maple syruping in 2017 was a moderately good year, making 272 gallons of syrup.• The 2016 archery hunt resulted in a harvest of 30 deer during the season. An archery

hunt is planned for Oct-Dec, 2017• The 19-acre Orion community solar garden was completed in January 2017. This is a

three megawatt project in addition to the existing four-acre installation. Saint John’s now receives an average of 20% of its power from solar energy on an annual basis.

• In September 2016 a timberframe bridge was added to the Chapel Trail to replace a crumbling concrete block structure. It has added a beautiful new “destination” on an already beautiful trail.

Our Shared VisionSaint John’s Outdoor University and the Abbey Arboretum celebrate the unique beauty and richness of God’s creation in central Minnesota and foster the Benedictine tradition of land stewardship, education and environmental respect.

Saint John’s Abbey Arboretum is more than 2,500 acres of lakes, prairie, oak savanna and forest owned by Saint John’s Abbey and surrounding Saint John’s University

Saint John’s Outdoor University MissionSaint John’s Outdoor University provides environmental and outdoor education in pursuit of:• Environmental literacy and connections to the natural world that motivate responsible

environmental decisions;• Leadership development and personal growth through experiential learning;• Sustainable land use and conservations• Learning, recreation and spiritual renewal in the Abbey Arboretum and other great

outdoor spaces.

Abbey Arboretum Mission• Preserve native plant and wildlife communities of

the Abbey Arboretum lands;• Provide opportunities for education and research;• Model practices of sustainable land use;• Make accessible a natural environment that

invites spiritual renewal.
