POSITIONSUMMARYFirstYearFellowssupportthepurposeoftheOfficeofAcademicEnhancementthroughtheireffortstoexposestudentstocampusresourcesandopportunities,encouragestudentsbyservingasanadvocateandmentorfor their professional and personal growth, engage students by connecting themwith faculty and campuspartners,and toempower studentsbymotivating themto takeownershipof theireducationand learn toadvocateforthemselvesalongtheirjourney.
FirstYearFellows(FYFs)aretrainedacademicpeermentorswholiveandworkwithagroupofstudentsinoneoffirstyearexperienceresidentialcolleges.Thetransitiontoanewuniversitysettingcanbechallenging,andFYFssupportandcoachstudentsthroughacademicchallenges.Inordertobesuccessfulinthisposition,FYFsbuild and maintain relationships with their residents through frequent individual interactions as well asansweringquestionsaboutclasses,majors,cognates,andotheracademicpolicies.

DUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES
GeneralExpectations
1. Adheretothespecificexpectationsidentifiedandcommunicatedfromyoursupervisor.2. Develop andmaintain a supportiveworking relationshipwithOAE staffmembers, Residential
Faculty,AreaDirector/AssistantAreaDirectors,ResidentAssistants,andotherFirstYearFellows.3. RolemodelandadheretoUniversityandHousingandResidentialLifepoliciesandprocedures.4. BeapositiverepresentationofHousingandResidentialLife,theOfficeofAcademicEnhancement,
andtheUniversityofMiamiinallmediums(oncampus,offcampus,socialmedia,etc.).5. UnderstandrolewiththeFamilyEducationalRightsandProtectionsAct(FERPA)bymaintaining
confidentiality.6. Notalldutiesmaybelisted,asyoumaybeaskedtocompleteotherdutiesasassigned.
Administrative
1. Participate in all training, staff development, staff meetings, and one on one meetings withsupervisor.
2. Assistinopeningofresidentialcollegesincludingpreparationandmoveindays.3. Serveonacollateralassignment,whichmaytaketheformofaformalcommittee,campuspartner
liaison,orspecificdutytobeassignedbysupervisor.4. ProvideofficeandclericalsupportintheResidentialCollegeAdvisingoffice,asneeded.5. Completevariousreports,includingbutnotlimitedto:programproposals,programassessments,
residentinteractiontracking,andbudgettracking.6. Supportuniversityanddepartmental initiativesandcontribute to theFYF teamaswell as the
respectiveresidentialcollegeteam.7. Participate in and support all First Year Fellow staff recruitment, selection and evaluation
processes.Expose-FYFswillexposetheirresidentstocampusresources,events,andopportunitiesby:
1. AssiststudentsintheirgeneralorientationtocampusbyaccompanyingresidentstoOrientationsessionsandevents.
2. Assess the programming and developmental needs of students by means of questionnaires,personalcontacts,intentionalresidentconversationstomeetresidents’academic,educational,multicultural,social,andprofessionaldevelopmentalneeds.
3. BeavailableandaccessibletostudentswithintheassignedResidentialCollegethroughouttheyear.
4. Support,promote,andworktheMajorsandMinorsFairsponsoredbyToppelCareerCenteraswellasFirstYearExperience(FYE)programssponsoredbyHousingandResidentialLife.
5. EducateresidentsofUniversityacademicpoliciesandprocedures.6. Directresidentstopropercampuspartnersfortheappropriateresourcesandsupport.7. Createandmaintainbulletinboardsforeachassignedflooreachmonth.

Encourage–FYFswilladvocateforandmentortheirresidents,offeraspacewelcomingforallstudents,andsupportstudents’personalandprofessionalgrowthby:
1. Developandmaintainhealthyandappropriaterelationshipswithresidentsinthebuilding.2. Conduct intentional resident one-on-one conversations with each resident in your assigned
community.3. RespectandrecognizethediversityofbeliefsvaluesandinterestsofUMstudents.Beconsistent
inbehaviortowardallstudentsregardlessofage,gender,race,ethnicbackground,socioeconomicstatus,sexualorientation,religion,disability,nationalityand/orveteranstatus.
4. AssiststudentstodevelopconfidenceinnavigatingtheUniversity.Engage–FYFswillconnectstudentstofacultyandcampuspartnerstoaid ingoalsettingandexploring their interests along with assisting with their professional communication skilldevelopmentby:
1. Provide support for all residents and promote an understanding between students byencouragingattendanceatprogramsofferedthroughtheUniversityandtheResidentialColleges.
2. CreateandfacilitateacademicallyorientedprogramswithintheassignedResidentialCollege.3. Completetwoconsistentlyscheduledcommunityhoursperweekinthefloorstudyloungesor
designatedareaarrangedwithsupervisor.4. Be personally involved with and encourage student involvement in campus and Residential
Collegeactivities.5. Helpstudentstoidentifypersonalgoalsandstrategiesforsuccessbasedontheirdefinitionof
success.6. Provide opportunities for individual reflection and academic conversations in the residential
colleges.Empower–FYFswillmotivatestudentstotakeownershipoftheireducation,learntoadvocateforthemselves,andnurtureresiliencyinordertoconfrontadversityinpursuitoftheirgoalsby:
1. Encouragetheprinciplesofindividualresponsibilityandrespectforothers’developmentthroughpositiverolemodeling,challengingandsupporting,andeducationalinitiatives.
2. Discusspotential referralsand/orproblemswithsupervisor. Regardanypersonal informationabout residents as confidential to protect the rights of the residents and increase trust andcredibility as a peer helper. However, the FYF will “consult up” as appropriate with theirsupervisor.
3. Utilize academic coaching techniques to assist students in developing strategies to overcomeacademicchallenges.

RemunerationandBenefits
HousingAssignment:FirstYearFellowsreside inasingleroomattherateofadoubleroominEaton,Hecht,orStanfordResidentialCollege.AwaiverintheamountofthedifferencebetweenasingleroomandadoubleroomisprovidedbyHousingandResidentialLifeandappliedtotheFYF’saccount.
MealPlan:HousingandResidentialLifeprovidesFirstYearFellowswitha14-mealplanwhenUniversityBoardPlanisoperating.Mealsarenotprovidedwhenthediningfacilitiesareclosed,andsubstitutionsarenotallowed,(e.g.cash,forthosenotwishingthemealplan,orthosewishingforalessermealplan).
Note:Thevalueofthehousingwaiverandmealplanisappliedasaresourcetoastudent’sfinancialaid.Please consultwith theOfficeof FinancialAssistance if youhavequestions about the impact to yourfinancialaid.
Qualifications
• CourseLoad:FYFsmustmaintainfull-timeundergraduate,degree-seekingstatusattheUniversityofMiamifortheentireyear,andbeenrolledinatleast12credits.FYFsmustalsonottakemorethan18credits,particularlyinthefirstsemesterofemployment.Requeststotakemorethan18creditsmaybemadetotheDirectoroftheOfficeofAcademicEnhancement.
• StudentStatus:FYFsmusthavebeenaUMstudentfortwosemesters(fallandspring)bythestartoftheirappointment.
• GradePointAverage:MaintainaminimumsemesterandcumulativeUMgradepointaverageof3.25attimeofapplicationandmaintainaminimumcumulativeandsemesterUMgradepointaverageof3.25duringthecontractedperiodofemployment.IfeithertheminimumcumulativeorsemesterUMGPAisnotmaintained,theFYFmaybegrantedamaximumofone(1)academicterm(FallorSpring)toreturntotheminimumstandards.IftheFYFisunabletoachieveminimumstandardsofa3.25cumulativeandsemesterUMGPAafteroneacademicterm,theFYFmaybeterminated.Newhiresarenotallowedtobegintheircontractedperiodofemploymentunderprobationduetofailuretomeettheminimumacademicrequirements.
• University Standing: FYFs may not be on strict disciplinary probation or final disciplinaryprobationattimeofhireoranypointduringemployment.
• BackgroundCheck:FYFsmustpassabackgroundcheck,whichrequiresasocialsecuritynumber.This is completed upon job offer, and failure to clear the background checkwill result in thewithdrawalofthejoboffer.
Note: International studentswho havenot previouslyworked on campus and obtained a valid socialsecurity number will be required tomake arrangements to return to the United States to completepaperworktoacquireasocialsecuritynumber30daysbeforetheemploymentstartdateinAugust.PleaseconsultwiththeOfficeofInternationalStudent&ScholarServicesfordetailsonthisprocess.
Requirements
• Additionalandoutsideemployment including internshipsandresearchmustbediscussedandapprovedbydirectsupervisor.
• The FYF position is to be considered the principal non-academic commitment for each FYF.Extracurricularandco-curricularactivities,includingresearch,shouldnotconflictwiththetimeneededtoperformeffectivelyasanFYFthroughouttheacademicyear.

• Adherencetoallpolicies,rules,andregulationsoftheUniversityofMiami.Failuretoabidebyallregulationsandpolicies;orfailuretopresentyourselfasapositiverolemodelmayresultinjobtermination.
• Aneveningclassisdefinedasendingafter6:15PM.Eveningclassesarenotallowedunlesstheclassisrequiredtograduateandneedstobetakenthatsemestertoremainontrack.Thisclassmustbeapprovedbytherespectiveseniorstaffthroughawrittenapprovalprocess.Tuesdayeveningclassesareprohibitedduetoweeklystaffmeetings.
• Tuesdayeveningsarereservedforweeklystaffmeetings,andFYFsmustbeavailable6:30PMto10:00PM.Whilethesemeetingswillnotlasttheentiretime,therewillbeoccasionsthatrequiretheflexibilityoftimeonTuesdayevening.
• TheFirstYearFellowpositioncommitmentis10-12hoursperweekonaverage.Therearesomeweekswherethecommitmentwillbeslightlymore,andotherweekswherethecommitmentwillbeslightlyless.Someofthiscommitmentwillbethroughformalevents,activities,andtangiblework,whilesomeofthecommitmentwillbemaintainingapresenceinthecommunitiestheFYFserves.
• Asaresultofthetimecommitment,majoroutsidecommitmentsmaypresentsignificantconflictsor greater than normal time management challenges. FYFs must not be committed to UMAthletics,Fraternity/SororityPresident,Orientationstaff,theStudentGovernmentPresident,ortheResidentAssistantposition.
• Additionally,MarchingBandmustbediscussedinadvancewiththeSr.AdvisorandtheDirectoroftheMarchingBand,whereanunderstandingisreachedthatFYFresponsibilitieswillcomefirst.ThemainconcernforMarchingBandistheopening.
• AllFYFsareexpectedtoattendandparticipateinstafftraining.TheAugusttrainingshouldbetheFYF’sonlycommitmentfromthestartoftrainingthroughthefirstdayofclasses.Thosewhorelyonexternalemploymentwillneedtoplantorequestthetimeoff.Thisisavitaltimeperiodforbuildingrelationshipswiththeteamanddevelopingskillstoserveresidents.
FirstYearU
• FourtofiveFYFswillbeidentifiedduringtimeofhireasfacilitatorsforFirstYearU.TheseFYFswillbeplacedonafloorinwhichtheyareresponsibleforservingonlyoneresidentialfloor,ratherthantwo,duetotheextracommitmentofFirstYearU.
• AttendaseparatetrainingandworkcloselywithButlerCenterforService&Leadershipstaff.• First Year U commitment includes four Sundays and six Mondays. The Sundays are for
teambuilding and experienceMiami trips, while theMondays are for scheduled dinners anddiscussionnights.
AppointmentTenure
• TheFYFappointmentisforthe2018-2019academicyearonly.Selectionofthe2019-2020academicyearstaffwillbebasedontheentirecandidatepoolincludingcurrentFYFsdeemedeligibleforrehire.Renewal of the appointment is based upon job performance and performance evaluations,whichincludeaformalmid-yearevaluationandasummaryevaluationinlatespringsemester.
